Oh man, thank you! I was trying so many different things to fix this issue! I actually tried this but didn't subtract enough of a value from y. I also tried using the contact.normal.y, which gives the direction of the collision. If it's less than or equal to zero, it means the collision is from the side or below. I'm still not sure why that method didn't work but I'm just happy I can move onto other things for now.

How do I keep the original scale even after making it a child?

Try to multiply/divide your transform scale when the player jumps on/off the platform(or have the scale on 1 for both, the player and platform)

If you have a isGrounded check or something like that to allow your player to jump, the solution might be as simple as giving the platform the same tag as your ground objects.
