U-joints were always fun. In the 20 Years that I was a mechanic, This was something else that I use a ball joint press on, especially with the reassembly. Even when I had the use of a full shop, I still used the B-J press. It just gave me that little extra amount of control. As you have just learned, always take your time.

For real. The first one I did was so simple and straightforward. I used the press. But for some dumb reason I decided to use the hammer. I don’t understand myself sometimes…

Bearing fell over, been there done that dozens of time in my experience as a mechanic. As you get experience, you learn how to detect that it happened before you do permanent damage. I don't usually use a press and use a bench vise instead.

14:37 - I could have saved myself a bit by watching this first.. I think I just learned the same thing you just learned :(

Dang, I’m sorry you didn’t see this first. It is a tough lesson but at least an inexpensive one.

I cracked a cap on the first one I did with too much pressure on the press. Gotta learn somehow, at least it wasn't too expensive of a lesson.

That’s kinda what happened here. The press was involved, and so was a needle bearing….

Hammers and 20 ton presses are great for breaking and damaging things. A good vice is all that is needed. I hope you used a propper Churchill type tool and not the darn press for pulling the hub. If not you may likely end up with wobbly wheels due to a bent flange. The UJ's use are a common stock size available from any bearing or joint supplier, but the quality of the product can vary dramatically from one brand to another. Only buy major brand UJ's such as Spicer, SKF etc. for this application. Or you may well find yourself doing the job again, perhaps much sooner than you might think. I have done this exact job literally 100's of times over 50+ years as a Triumph specialist. Been there, Done that.

I learned the hard way and I am learning as I go. I did use the correct hub puller to remove the hubs in an earlier video.

Ouch. That's always gut wrenching

Yeah, it was pretty deflating to say the least.

Steve, when putting those caps on the yolks in the U joints, I never use a hammer on the end of the caps because you caused them to expand possibly crack them but that hammering definitely expands those surfaces you need to use a block of wood or put them back in the press and press them on once you get to started. Press them on with your hydraulic press never Hammerman place.😳😳😳

The hammering effect can also cause problems with those little needle bearings to take a pop out misaligned whole bunch of stuff not good practice.
