Universal Should Build a Classic Movie Ride

Do you miss the classic attractions that defined early Universal Studios Florida? Kongfrontation, Jaws, Earthquake, Back to the Future, Ghost Busters, etc.? Universal clearly knows that there's demand for these properties, especially with the Summer Blockbuster Tribute Store featuring merchandise for these films. While Universal certainly won't restore the original attractions to the park, I would like to instead propose a Universal version of The Great Movie Ride. In this video, I discuss why this should be done in regards to the park's theming, in addition to covering the logistics of where something like this might be placed.

ET ride system but themed as a helicopter, so you can fly by Doc hanging off the clock tower, the Ghostbusters fighting Stay Puft, then see Kong tearing apart a bridge. Fly through a Twister, dip down past Jaws… so many possibilities for a wild ride through epic movies. Tear down Fast and Furious and put the ride there.

A way to beat Disney is to do everything they’re not and to give guests what they can’t. A movie ride based on old and beloved attractions would do just that and more.

@@Lovesapuzzle a frequent complaint I've heard from people as if there's not enough roller coasters. There are a lot of rides that use coaster elements and/or sudden movements. What about them don't you like? If it's heights and drops those don't do much for that. If it's motion sickness a lot of rides have a lot of movement, spinning included, so the rides could be kind of rough on you. There are still a lot of other rides and A LOT of shows to enjoy.

I 100% agree, Universal Studios (much like Hollywood Studios in the beginning) nails the back lot/behind the scenes feel and celebration of movies. The Great Movie Ride was the perfect blend of education and entertainment (I still miss the movie props in the queue). A Universal version could be very compelling.

Absolutely love this ride idea. I think it’d be interesting to have it as a back to the future experience, since you’d be traveling to park’s past. That would give the film representation, as well as constructing a potential narrative of why you’re going to these older rides. Say the ride vehicles have a screen on the dashboard where Doc gives you the location of where to go. The ride’s story could be that he needs parts, or characters from the previous attractions for something, whether it be an invention, a museum, or just a party with old friends. I could see a largely screen-less ride like that working, featuring some animatronic characters, and scenes from old rides with Doc Brown commentary throughout. I don’t know how this idea would be received, but I think it’d provide a lot of fun interactions from the characters, and would be able to share some of Universal’s history while still constructing a fun narrative with some action and adventure.

Fun fact: There was once going to be a Muppets Great Movie Ride, but was scrapped because they didn’t want to have 2 GMRs in the same park. The KZbinr Attraction Ideas thought it would be cool to resurrect the idea and make it a reality as the original one closed. Also, I think M&MRR should have replaced Star Wars Launch Bay instead.

The Great Movie Ride was in my top 3 favorite Disney attractions. I get that not everyone felt so strongly about it but it made the perfect thesis statement for Disney-MGM Studios. And the detail on the attraction and the extensive audio-animatronics were truly impressive. But what was best about the attraction was that it was filled with inspiring Edutainment that got you excited about its topic. I think it's replacement is a true embarrassment but that's just my opinion. Universal has just as good of a reason to create an attraction based on classic film as Disney ever did and knowing their trajectory they could even do one that is better than the first. If they ever did this I would only be concerned about excessive screen use. It would be really dumb to create an attraction based on taking you into classic films by plopping you in front of a screen instead of surrounding you in immersion.

I'd like to see a "Spielberg Presents" ride, with a heavy emphasis on ET, Jaws, JP, and his other films which Universal might be able to get (Close Encounters of the Third Kind, War of the Worlds, Ready Player One, AI, Minority Report). This would give a way out for Universal to remove the aging ET ride.

Another Great Video! But I do not think the question is if Universal should build its own Great Movie Ride; but how big they should make the ride attraction. I think Universal could have learned from Disney's mistake with The Great Movie Ride and improved on it using their drive in movie trackless dark ride concept @10:37. Which from looking at the photo in this video; would have been amazing. But again as I have stated before Disney could have done so much more with The Great Movie Ride and a missed opportunity especially with all the new IP's they acquired like Marvel, Star Wars and 20TH Century Fox they could have added newer movies and maybe even expanded the building and put more scenes with more animatronics and screens into it. Again Universal should learn from Disney mistake and show people why their original slogan was “Ride the Movies”.

Honestly, I love this idea and think it could work. The only thing I would change is the placement of the land. I don’t see Simpson’s staying at the park after their contract runs out so having that ride be in the Back to the Future building would kind of be a meta aspect to add onto it. You can still have ET and Animal Actors somewhat near it and it allows Kidzone to become Dreameorld Land like it’s currently becoming. This isn’t saying I dislike Simpson’s but it’s realistic that it takes up a large chunk of land and you could realistically get rid of it while bringing back a nostalgic based attraction and land.

Back to the future is easy to incorporate into this ride. That should be the very first thing on the ride. They could use the Kuka robot arm with the ride vehicles looking like the DeLorean. Passengers enter the vehicles and then time travel back in time to end up in scenes from Jaws, Kong, Twister, or whatever and you experience that portion before being time traveled to another scene, letting riders experience these past attractions in a brand new way. Like imagine being in the DeLorean and coming face to face with Kong, or suddenly you're in Wakita and getting spun around as the twister barrels down on you before being transported to Amity Island "flying" over the water when Jaws suddenly lunges at your vehicle. The tech is there to do something that would be so exciting and different, bringing new life to defunct rides. Have it use both physical sets as well as screens for full immersion. The screens could be used for the time travel scenes then to show off where you're at before turning to put you in the physical setting for the big reveals, like an animatronic Kong, Jaws, or the tornado barreling down right in front of you.

I would like to see at least one classic from universal’s early past. Maybe a western that was shot at the OG universal city. Or maybe the creature from the back lagoon which was filmed in Florida. And I think they should also add one horror film. And to top it off a space opera /sci-fi, maybe terminator. And they can also add something from an action thriller. So it can be a real great movie ride. Or “The Great Universal Ride”. Going through bits from the movies and attractions that made Universal great for almost a century will be a dream come true

I was looking through the comments to see if anyone had mentioned Terminator. I was going to make one myself otherwise. I would love to see a Terminator scene in the ride. The Terminator attraction was great. The combination of 3D effects, animatronics, and live actors made for an incredible experience. Somehow incorporating that into a tram or trackless dark ride could really set this hypothetical attraction up for massive success!

It could be cool to do a ‘trackless’ dark ride with a DeLorean travel vehicle visiting different eras of the park or Universal universe and visiting iconic scenes from the classic attractions- usually scenes already previously represented in Universal attractions. Maybe there could be a ‘malfunction’ of some sort with a DeLorean time machine where riders are lost in a temporal/dimensional rift trying to get home and every time jump takes them closer to returning while landing in different show scenes from each classic attraction’s film.

I love this idea. Maybe it could be spread between 2-3 different attractions? Sort of by genre: Horror/Monsters, then Sci-Fi, Thriller and Romance, lastly Fantasy, Drama, and Western/Historical. (I almost suggested each genre gets a ride, but the Great Movie Ride was cool because it had a mash-up of genres. Clearly, there's a lot of refinement needed once the specific films are chosen. Heck, Jaws and Kong could be fitted into all three of my sub-categories...but three different Kongfrontations seems good to me, haha)

i like the idea of a tram tour like trackless darkride where the ride vehichles were like classic cars from that image in the video ... starting like you are JUST watching movies at a drive in. If done well ... this can be really good. While NOTHING to this scale .... I was hoping years back that dead pavilions in one of my FORMER favorite places, CLASSIC Epcot ... they could have used both Innoventions/Communicore east and west AND what is now going to be "the Play Pavilion" (Wonders of Life) and even the area I USE TO LOVE ... the Odyssey restaurant (something about that area by the water and the bridges I always liked ... the music in the background too added an atmosphere i still remember YEARS later. As tributes to Classic Epcot ... hell they all were just sitting there and a walk through (maybe even have a VR sort of setup FOR FORMER pavilions ) sort of thing would have actually used that space and for folks like me it would have paid tribute to rides and areas that MADE Epcot what it should have been and was in its early years

If Universal make a ride similar to the Great Movie ride, get rid of Super Charge. That has to go and heck retheme the San Francisco area to idk Studio City or North Hollywood. Neighbors that’s around the Hollywood Park by making it feel more why that area is important to the company. The movies I would like to see, maybe pick them by the decade like 70s Jaws, 80s Back to the Future, and so on. That way it also shows the history and how far we got with cinema. I feel like that idea will make Disney actually get their act together and go back to theming the parks rather than spinning a wheel and decide what IP they can cheaply built as a land and ride.

This idea is wonderful. Though, I’ve been pondering on the practicality of it existing in Hollywood to represent other properties like E.T. (Since we lost it in 2003). Though I feel like it would fall too similarly conceptually as the Studio Tour. So instead, I propose a rework to that experience all together, and incorporate an extra 25 minutes of showrooms for the Studio Tour including these ideas your just mentioned. I don’t think this would hurt the theme of that ride since over time, we start to see less and less of the genuine sets and sound stages over time. I feel that Hollywood would be the ideal home for this idea, especially since the groundwork is already there and on its own is already a celebration of all of these ideas.

EPCOT was my favorite place on this planet (that I didn't call the home in which I grew up) for so many years. I really feel like Disney is making so many missteps these days (intentionally, at that) that this is really Universal's opportunity to grab on or miss. I haven't been back to Universal since it first opened, especially because my trip there was just lacking. The only ride I enjoyed was Back to the Future (more so than Star Tours by a MILE), and it's been gone forever. We waited in line for some 2-3 hours for the E.T. ride, which I still say felt like a cheap Peter Pan's Flight, and so many rides just weren't working at all that day. But they're doing a lot of things now that seem to be garnering the right kinds of attention. The Nintendo Land has me interested (despite it seemingly only being centered around Mario??). If they brought back anything that pays homage to BTTF, it would be a lock for me that I could take an Orlando vacation and just not even consider WDW.

I honestly really enjoy this idea. I find it as a very nice way to incorporate most of the old properties along with new ones. As for my idea, knowing that time seems to be running out for the Springfield area at the park (at least assuming Disney isn’t gonna let them renew), I’d say replace the Springfield area with a big outdoor area dedicated to the Movies of both past and present. The area could be reminiscent of the old Bone Yard, while also being able to keep the Back to the Future props in place. Perhaps the area and ride’s facade is a big production set, with cameras and tapes being placed everywhere, and some photo opportunities. If they really wanted to, they could even bring back interactive ads edutainment offerings that mix with the ride’s theme. Gutting the Simpsons ride give the dark ride a lot more space to work with. I’d say it’s a great way in bringing back and revitalizing its old production theme, while also a good way in introducing new interactive elements, like what they’ve been doing with both Harry Potter and Nintendo.

I'd like to see a Universal Great Movie Ride; however, what's presented in this video is a Universal Classic Attractions Ride. Instead of remixing old attractions and attractions from other parks, a Great Movie Ride should be something brand new and integrate more recent films that are not already theme park attractions. As far as location, they could use Men in Black and/or the large area in the NE corner of the park that could become available as they move back of the house space to Epic Universe.
@jacobselleck9750

I’ve had this idea for months. I think all the minions attractions are temporary cheap bandages while they save money for Epic Universe construction, and after that opens they’ll commit to a full makeover of USO. I think this attraction actually could fit where Shrek was, and just use the current Hello Kitty store as the queue and build it up as a full facade. I don’t think the Minion attraction replacing Shrek will use much infrastructure because it does seem like a very temporary addition, and while I think Universal would submit to this idea of a ride, they wouldn’t build it out as the biggest thing because to them it probably seems difficult to market. I think a simple ride system like secret life of pets would do wonders, keep the height limit at an absolute minimum and really make it their true icon ride so they can just do whatever else they want with the park. Also take the Kong animatronic from IOA and replace SIROK with Jurassic World Adventure from Beijing, in a perfect world of course.

First of all, to start with, I'd love to have a set of "tour guide mascots" for this ride akin to Journey into Imagination. In this case, I'd love a Dreamfinder-esque figure based on a director or an usher who likes to talk about movie magic, and maybe Woody Woodpecker to add a bit of chaos to this. As for the movies? I know not all of them would appear, but here's a few I'd like to see. -The Grinch: This is one of Universal's most ambitious films and the sets were whimsical and askew. Besides who doesn't love Jim Carrey as the Grinch? -Bride of Frankenstein: Recreate the final scene of the crumbling castle, do the whole thing in black and white. -Beetlejuice: C'mon the poor guy is haunting the makeup show, let's let him turn up the juice and see what shakes loose. Do a sound show based on "Jump in the Line" -Prince of Egypt/The 10 Commandments: Both were iconic movies, and I was actually surprised when the Academy Award Museum featured it in a clip show of some of the best animated works. It'd be beautiful if you could pass across the parted Red Sea. -Back to the Future: I know it's outdated, but still a classic. Kind of bring that up on the tour Tour Guide: "Movies allowed us to envision the future" Woody: "Last time I went to California, it didn't look like that" Doc Brown: "Not yet! The future is whatever we want it to be, and right now people are being inspired to create things based on the movies. Just like Jules Verne inspired me..." -Jaws: It was such an incredible and iconic movie. -Shrek: Again Shrek is iconic and gives a great opportunity to cheekily poke fun at Disney like Universal does on their twitter. Shrek: "What are we supposed to do?" Donkey: "Well, that OTHER park tends to play the same song on loop. I KNOW! LET'S START A SING-ALONG!" Donkey and Woody: "IIIIIITTTT'S AAAAAA..." Shrek: "NO!!!!!!" -Jurassic World: Again, like the original Jurassic Park better, but it'd be great to transplant parts of Jurassic World Adventure here. -The Blues Brothers: We need some comedy and music and this seems ideal. -King Kong: Again we have Skull Island, it's time for part 2 in New York. -Ghostbusters: Again put guests face to face with Gozer and Stay Puft

I agree with almost every video you make … as this is one of my favorite KZbin channels. Although this idea, I can’t get onboard with. Having worked at many of these original attractions and some shows, I just don’t think the cost to create such an attraction would have the draw it would need to justify the investment. Also, I think Universal would really fall flat if they move HHN to Epic Universe. They tried doing this for years ago at Islands of Adventure, and it just didn’t work as well. Plus, Epic Universe will not need HHN for people to flood that park when it opens. Universal Studios needs the extra help. Regardless, thank you for all the time and effort you put into creating your videos. I love your creative mind and appreciate the work and hours to takes to create each video and then the process of programing, creating thumbnails and uploading to KZbin.

I think it could be cost effective if creators would consistently remember: it's believability, and NOT realism. Also, this is the first decade where Universal FINALLY has three generations of park goers. And many of those middle generations have full access to these moderate and major classics for nearly free on streaming or any random cable movie channel. Taking my 9-year old in 2009, is the springboard for her to do the same in future, These next years are Universal's first big chances at "nostalgia echo" and "nostalgia halo effect"

@@PoseidonEntertainment that may also be. I was under the impression that guest surveys didn’t go well when they split the parks. I have a good friend in entertainment that still works there. I’ll try to see if he knows more that he can share. I also think it had something to do with logistics also. I’ll try to find out. Personally, when I went, starting with the very 1st one … when it grew to Islands of Adventure, it just didn’t have the same vibe. I was happy when they went back to just Universal Studios.

@@PoseidonEntertainment update: I talked with my friend who works in the Entertainment Department at Universal about why they stopped using IOA for HHN. Here was his response: From what heard, it’s because the pathways at IOA are too narrow for the crowds that come to HHN. The traffic flow is too tight to get the crowds through. Universal is better designed for big crowds. IOA’s capacity is only about 40,000. Universal can fit 60,000. And, having the event in just one park allows the other park to have a longer daytime experience with out closing early for the switchover. And the non-HHN park can still do events. That is our busiest event season. I don’t know if that is the official story, but that is what I was told when I asked many years ago.😁

I think that this would be awesome and totally possible. I think it would be best with the SCOOP vehicles from spiderman. You could easily put in physical scenes and with that vehicle it would allow you to feel like the original rides. Like for the King Kong or Jaws sections of the ride. I think this could work great! If Universal would give the space to make such a ride, they would have a win on their hands

Adding on to my thought. If they used the Fear Factor Live Area that would give them SO MUCH ROOM. According to Google earth it has an area of 50,000 feet. That could give them a HUGE attraction. And if I may be so bold to suggest, they could also do what transformers does and use a second level of the attraction. This could give them room for the BEST attraction they have ever made. Taking old attractions, classic movies that never got attractions, and anything they felt would fit. That could be incredible!

I agree that the Scoop vehicles would make a lot of sense for something like this. I think that with Spider-Man and Transformers using the vehicles, it may seem like a little too much over-saturation, but I can't deny that the motion capabilities would work really well.

Universal, take notice, this should be your next attraction in Universal studios Orlando! Epic gets a stunning love letter to the start of Universal Studios with it's classic horror movies but there is a more current golden age with Jaws, Back to the Future, Hitchcock movies, The Thing, Hannibal, Abbot and Costello movies, Earthquake and more to pull from. Then there are some wonderful animated movies that are not represented in the resort and can be put to good use. Building this next to E.T. would compliment a Classic Universal Studios Land perfectly.

I think this would be an amazing thing to build once epic universe opens and they have the ability to remove the employee service area on backlot road by Men in Black and back to the Future. Considering Simpsons has to be gone by 2028 or 2029, and they will have employee services for all three Parks up and running on the epic universe campus, they could redevelop that entire area of universal proper into something extremely amazing

If the Monsters couldn’t be added due to the rumored theme area at Epic Universe, they could add classic horror films outside of the Monsters brand that have history with Halloween Horror Nights. Psycho, The Shining, American Werewolf In London, Chucky, Saw, The Exorcist, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Nightmare on Elm Street to name many as I could. The only downside I see that it would be too much content wise. Here’s something I wanna ask ya, how would you feel if Disney planned on an attraction like the Great Movie but with classic anime shows and movies for the Japan pavilion at Epcot?

I really love the ideas put in this video, about were could it be,i think it could be on production central if a specific situation happends,so we know in IOA has marvel theme land, were not really sure for how much longer that land would be there becuse of disney,so in theory it will be replaced, the best contender would be prob a transformers theme land, since beijing transformers land really resembles marvel super heroe island, with the transformers ride moved to IOA they would have the space for a new ride, and i really think this universal great movie ride would be a nice fit to take its place, just that change the ride vehicles from transformers to trackless rides and that would do the job. Also i really like the idea of having dreamworks catalogue of films, mostly becuse it would be pretty smart to have a scene based on the film The prince of Egypt(since im not sure if they have the rights to the 56 The Ten Commandment movie)....and well.................having the I Need a Hero Scene from shrek 2 in the ride would be like the greatest thing in theme park history. (Pd:Tenically.....reign of kong fits the literature theme of IOA becuse king kong actully debuted in a book in 32,a year before the movie)

I think the biggest struggle would come from on high. It could just end up only being Universal movies based on how much of Universal Studios Orlando has become a big commercial for everything NBC Universal owns in the front half of the park despite how good the relations have been with Warner and Sony. Why remove Twister for Jimmy Fallon if not just to avoid another fee? Why replace Earthquake/Disaster with Fast & Furious? Why replace Terminator with Bourne? Sure, those properties might be dated, but there was also always still the focus on having made the movies and living the experience, the audience is able to get caught up in what the main attraction is getting at even if you aren't familiar with the property. Maybe it was more of a cost thing in terms of materials with how much water and fog and smoke and propane were used. Regardless, I remember pitching an idea to you awhile back about Universal doing a Great Movie Ride, and I think it could absolutely work. That park seriously needs something other than a screen 90% of the time. It really does all come down to licensing and what agreements they're willing to make. You can write off anything Disney, Lucasfilm, and Fox however, which is too bad because I see the ride much like how Disney's was and kind of pulling you through cinema history and there are definitely some seminal moments made by those studios that impacted the film industry you just can't ignore. However, Universal's idea of pulling you through a Drive-In theater screen sounds much more action packed, and I was trying to think of something that could involve time travel so that you could not only visit the movies, but it also play into the historical narrative, too. I'm thinking of the DeLorean, Bill & Ted's phonebooth, and something else (I want to say H.G. Wells' Time Machine, but it's a static vehicle) just so that you could have different tracks to make the ride different every time. So say that everytime it's time to go to a new movie, it's not just a vignette, but you go through a tunnel with the time traveling and simulated speed before popping to the next, kind of like Spider-Man and better than Gringotts where they just go pitch black between scenes. I don't know, I think I might be thinking a bit too grand or it would work better as a simulator like Star Tours where you really could just randomize everything and make the experience unique everytime.

I do wish that Universal would move away from the latest and most relevant of IP. Still, The Secret Life of Pets and the Jurassic World stuff has turned out great, so I'm not exactly against it as long as attractions like those keep getting produced.

It it would be bizarre if they made a themed water coaster ride based on ON GOLDEN POND (which is Universal's IP). It starts with Norman Thayer telling you he's going to drive your boat with this little dohicky which is a remote and then K. Hepburn animatronic saying "Norman, you can't do that -- you'll kill them all." The "Good God" as you make the giant drop would be epic. Of course, you'd need great imitators of the two iconic voices.
