Universal tub diverter spout installation

Tips for installing a universal tub diverter spout. The last time I replaced a tub diverter spout I bought 2 spouts, one that would work on threaded nipples and one that would work on copper pipe. The one that didn't work I would take back to the home improvement store for a refund. This time a bought a universal spout that should work on any type of connection.

Thank you. Your video was a great help as I had a hard time getting the inner rubber gasket on the adapter on the copper pipe. I was afraid I would tear the gasket but I gently twisted the adapter and it did finally go over the copper pipe. I did not see you put the big rubber gasket between the adapter and the long piece that runs up the nozzle, but I installed it. Last, I had bought a new Delta faucet which had a different slip on unit inside the faucet. It required a copper stub of at least 1.5 inches which I did not have. I bought the 10 dollar Peerless unit and used the delta faucet with the inner from the Peerless unit. Worked perfect, easier and allowed me to use a 1 inch copper stub coming out of the wall. Ha, I saw this video and laughed. I was going to write the same response. The motion of unwinding the Teflon tape is sometimes a disaster with stainless steel on s.s. Fortunately plastic tends to be self sealing at low domestic pressures. Nice catch : )

You are wrapping the teflon tape the wrong way at the end. It should be wrapped clockwise, because the faucet is being turned clockwise to tighten it.

You could try some sand cloth and lightly sand the end of the pipe so there are no burrs that will grab the o-ring, then lightly sand the exterior of the pipe to remove any imperfections, solder, etc. After that apply some dish soap on the o-ring and exterior of the pipe and rotate the adapter back and forth as you push it onto the pipe.

I like to fill possible water escape routes with silicone. The large hole around the cooler tubs is a great way for water possibly make its way down to my neighbours. I would also use some against the replacement part and the wall. Just in case.. No harm done, but peace of mind.

If it's connected to copper pipe there should be a set screw on the underneath side of the spout. Loosen the set screw and then try to rotate off. If the spout is connected to a male adapter try twisting counter clockwise to remove from the male adapter. If this doesn't work by hand you might need to try a big pair of channel locks.

The following worked (8/2018): I sprayed some WD-40 on the rod of the diverted knob, then sprayed inside the end of the spout on the rod and also on the rails of the diverter. Now the diverter works great, with I'd say 95% of the water being diverted to the shower head. No need to buy Allen wrenches, buy a new spout, or hire a plumber.

Now you have toxic WD-40 residue in the water if you use the tub. Would be better to use a food grade dry-film lubricant or food grade silicone/Syncolon grease instead. Super Lube brand.

Good video, just be sure to wrap the teflon tape in the same direction as the device (nut, faucet...) is turned as it is installed. It will probably be ok if the tape is on tight enough.

Sorry Scaper, is a good clear vid and quite valuable but Toly you are quite right. Teflon tape should be wrapped in the same direction as the threads would be turned in. This will pressure the the tape to draw into the threads and tighten around them as opposed to pushing out and loosening as the spout is turned on. As long as spout is leak tested at the finish either way will most likely perform the function of sealing however the better and most effective way is with the turn of the threads.

i put the black ring screwed in the white tube. worked easier, than the 2 together on the wall, see black ring goes deeper in the tube and then easy to screw on to the metal one on the pole. :)

I almost broke my pipe... happily copper is so maleable it twisted and there was no break nor leak... please pay attention to that first (life or death-of the pipe) step

Do you have separate valves to control the water? One valve for the shower and one for the tub?

If you're sure the copper pipe is 3/4" (7/8" OD) coming out of the wall, the easiest solution would be to find a diverter spout that slides over the 3/4" copper pipe.

I don't know plumbing but it makes sense to tape in the same direction that your screwing in the object, that way the tape is pressed tighter as the object threads pass over it.

I got it done but sloppy. I had to get a pvc pipe cutter and cut off 1/4" of the plastic threaded pipe that screws into the spout. I never could get the spout to screw in far enugh to meet the wall so I bought a chrome ring and put it on the wall first with some sealant, then screwed the spout on. In retrospect, I think I needed to cut the copper pipe, but I bet I still would have had that guessing how to meet the wall.

Teflon tape was used correctly the first time and wrong the second. Always put tape in direction that the threads tighten in or the tape has a tendency to bunch and rip.

@ 1:04 He would actually have been TIGHTENING the set screw! You have to be careful, when working upside down or backwards with tools, to imagine yourself facing the fastener so that you don't get the wrong direction for tightening or loosening. He must have already successfully loosened the set screw and was going through the motions with the hex key for the video. Once he turns the diverter screw-side up he turns the screw the proper direction to loosen. Anyway, be careful: this is a mistake I often make when working on cars and the bolt or screw is facing away from me.

It takes 1 minute to remove or use a flashlight and look up to see that type of spout connection there is before you buy a replacement. I would avoid using an universal type. They tend to leak easier and more often.

Big beef I have with all installers. Clean the old wall well before putting the new one on. Don't leave old grubby caulk behind to caulk over. Some people need to stop rushing through these things...usually ones being paid. When I do a kitchen faucet for instance..all the pipes under the sink are taken apart and cleaned well before putting back. Lots of goo and gunk gets built up in them. Germy!

what if i need an extension that is just a BIT longer than what I have? spout used to sit fine against shower wall, but after remodeling (was old plywood walls and "waterproof" laminate overlay), the cement board + tiling has made the spout further away from main pipe in wall into which extension gets screwed.

You want to wrap the thread tape the opposite direction of what you're tightening, which is counter clockwise. If you wrap the same direction often times the tape will undo itself as you thread the nipple into the fitting.

the silver adapter is harder than heck to get on. sand the pipe a lot and use soap or plumbers grease to slide on. also you have to champhor the pipe with a file to put a bevel on it so the adapter fits.

The Universal diverter tap I purchased at Home Depot is the same as this one shown in the first part of your video. Problem is, my non-threaded copper pipe isn't 2" max from wall. I'm afraid to cut it down. Does the pipe need to be cut down to 2" max for this "universal" tap to work?

Could you give me some tips on sliding the adapter on to the pipe? I bought a diverter and it has brass adapter and I can't seem to get it slide on to the pipe. I sanded the pipe clean and even tried putting some lube on it. Should I just return the diverter or should I change the pipe?

You've got that backwards. You go with the direction of the piece that you're screwing on your fitting. So you go clockwise so it doesn't unwrap.

This dude installed it reverse.. That part he put in first goes in last.... He obviously didn't read the instructions.. First adapter on copper pipe, tighten it with key. Then rubber on pipe. apply tape or thread sealer then screw on the plastic part he has in his hand tight to the black gasket... Then you lastly screw on the spout after you thread seal it... you're welcome.

+John Rambo He also didn't caulk either the shower wall or the diverter, which is a disaster waiting to happen if/when it starts leaking back into the wall. Finally he put the tape on backward - it goes clockwise. There are much better videos out there of this.

gypsy violin Just read the instructions on the package. Very simple.... Trust me a 5 year old can do this... Put the tape on clockwise... And caulk the hole that goes behind the shower wall if you wanna be 100% safe.
