Naughty Dog told Universal that they wouldn't be renewing their contract with Universal after Crash 2 finished development and this caused Universal to treat them like garbage during development of Crash 3. CTR didn't start out as a Crash game either, and it wasn't until Naughty Dog showed the Kart Racer prototype that Sony wanted to make it a Crash game. Naughty Dog were only willing to make it a Crash game if Sony obtained the rights to Crash from Universal, which they agreed upon and managed to secure the deal. CTR was the only Crash game made by Naughty Dog that had no involvement from Universal in any capacity, which made developing it much less stressful to the Naughty Dog team.
@burgermike925 жыл бұрын
This is also why Universal doesnt appear in the intro because as you said they had no involvement in CTR. I honestly never knew that until a couple months ago.
@burgermike925 жыл бұрын
@Chandler Burse No she said that because ND wanted to end their contract with Universal after Crash 2, they began treating them like trash during the development of Crash 3. Universal always had the rights to Crash. Same goes for Spyro. ND and Insomniac just had contracts with Universal to make games for them. Once they moved on, Universal went looking for other developers.
@RockRage89625 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say for certain, but CTR was developed without Universal's involvement in any capacity outside of letting Sony and Naughty Dog use the franchise to make the game a Crash Title. I believe they still had the rights to Crash and Spyro as IP's, as was made evident by the later titles. CTR was the exception, and I'm not entirely sure if Sony temporarily had the rights and then Universal bought them back, or if they never had the full rights, and Universal just allowed them to make a Crash game without their involvement. Either way, CTR was the only Crash game Naughty Dog developed that wasn't filled with ire and stress thanks to Universal.
@bcrossfire12195 жыл бұрын
The grand irony is that Universal themselves really didn't contribute much aside from publishing, which Sony themselves could easily have handled if only Naughty Dog and Insomniac had come to them directly. The fact that Universal didn't greenlight a Crash Bandicoot cartoon beyond a pilot, despite doing just that for Earthworm Jim beforehand (successfully), is an early sign that they had no clue what they were doing. Not that Sierra were any better, but Universal had no business overlooking games. Especially since Activision actually knows to nip development in the bud if things go terribly within a dev company (see Crash Landed). It's also telling that CTR's plot involving an alien was Naughty Dog's attempt at getting the Crash series cancelled, thinking that fans would find it too outlandish (didn't work, since the series already had sci-fi elements). To think they were being worked THAT hard. One last takeaway is that the developers for the N. Sane Trilogy are Vicarious Visions, who were also involved in Universal's tenure of Crash and Spyro. Telling how NST did so well that Naughty Dog creators finally fully praised a Crash production they didn't have personal involvement with.

The worst thing that the Spyro series did was add extra non dragon characters. Other than the ones they already introduced in the original game. That cheetah dude was a terrible idea. Somebody higher up must’ve came up with that idea and really forced it into the game. Terrible design. Oh, an too much dialogue.

Sony, Universal Interactive Studios and Naughty Dog Games made four successful games of Crash Bandicoot franchise like Crash Bandicoot (1996), Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (1997), Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (1998), and Crash Team Racing (1999) before Activision and two game developers: Vicarious Visions and Beenox made two successful remake games of Crash Bandicoot franchise like Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (2017) and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (2019). Except for the post Naughty Dog games of Crash Bandicoot franchise like: Crash Bash (2000), Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex (2001), Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure (2002), Crash Bandicoot: N. Tranced (2003), Crash Nitro Kart (2003), Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage (2004), Crash: Twinsanity (2004), Crash Tag Team Racing (2005), Crash Boom Bang! (2006), Crash of the Titans (2007) and Crash: Mind Over Mutant (2008). Universal Interactive Studios, Vivendi Universal Games and Sierra Entertainment didn't make successful games for the post Naughty Dog games of Crash Bandicoot so Activision doesn't have to make anymore remakes of Crash Bandicoot franchise. Sony, Universal Interactive Studios and Insomniac Games made three successful games of Spyro the Dragon franchise like Spyro the Dragon (1998), Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999), and Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon (2000) before Activision and a game developer: Toys for Bob made an only successful remake game: Spyro Reignited Trilogy (2018). Except for the post Insomniac Games of Spyro the Dragon franchise like Spyro: Season of Ice (2001), Spyro: Season of Flame (2002), Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (2002), Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs (2003), Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy (2004), Spyro: A Hero's Tail (2004), Spyro: Shadow Legacy (2005), The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning (2006), The Legend of Spyro 2: The Eternal Night (2007), and The Legend of Spyro 3: Dawn of the Dragon (2008). Universal Interactive Studios, Vivendi Universal Games, and Sierra Entertainment didn't make the successful games of post Insomniac Games of Spyro the Dragon franchise either so Activision doesn't have to make anymore remakes of post Insomniac Games of Spyro the Dragon franchise either. Activision and Toys for Bob made a successful revivaled brand new game of Crash Bandicoot franchise like Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time (2020). But hopefully Activision and possibly Beenox will make a successful revival brand new game of Spyro the Dragon franchise like new Spyro 4 into the future. 🙂

Good video, but you got a few things wrong. While crash bandicoot 1,2, 3, and ctr all came out a year after eachother, crash bandicoot 1 had 2 years of development time. The other games had about a year, crash 2 having about 13 months. 3 had 11. And ctr was at about a 10 months. While these seem short, however you forgot 1 important thing. Video games required significantly less resources and time to make sure g the 90s than standard games now. Most games back then were made in about a year. Also naughty dog had a 3 game contract with universal. Not 4. After crash 3 naughty dog left universal. They wanted to make a racing game and went to Sony to negotiate a game. Sony wanted a crash themed racing game. While universal did implement crunch time, however it was crash 3 and ctr where universal was really abusing naughty dog. 2 from what I've been able to look up had a relatively smooth development. Sony worked with naughty dog to deal with universal for ctr Also going back to crash 3. 3 originally was suppose to be a racing game, however during that 11 month development time, the game early on was developing a racing engine, that same engine that was used for ctr. Statements from Andy Gavin have said that they spent a few months on that build. Implying 2 to 3 meaning crash 3 was most likely made in 8 months. So while ctr was made in 10 months, they did have a build that had few months already worked on. I'm not defending universal, but I'm making sure accurate information is given.

Wrath of Cortex is far from the worst Crash Game. It's not even that bad, it's just needs improvement. Hell I think if they remade it like they did with the first 3 games and maybe just tweaked the story and fleshed out the controls better, it'd be a really good game. Sure yes it is a Crash Warped clone but that doesn't need to be a bad thing.

TBH, the only thing Universal did right was their logo itself (with the music done by the late James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith) and having both I.P.s at the theme parks in the early 2000s. The biggest irony is that Universal distributed Crash and Spyro in the past, while they are also doing a Mario and Sonic movie. (In my country, Universal is the distributor of the Sonic movie)
