I love seeing this whole other era of learning and how we interacted.

They are some of our most vital institutions. Not only is education our third largest export, but also an educated workforce is needed for us to compete internationally.

Ah the days when education was free! Now you have to choose between getting a degree or getting a house. Can’t afford both.

Amazing window into what was then higher education. My dear late 94 year old neighbour, John who passed away a few years ago was a product of this era - specialising in Cardiology. He became a pillar in this area and many specialists today owe their training to him. He spoke fondly to me of those days at University in the 1950s and how much he enjoyed it.

Whenever I watch these old NFSA films, I secretly hope that someone who was around back then, is watching this KZbin video now and recognises themself from 70-odd years ago. How fantastic would that be!

Thanks AlphaGeekgirl. It has happened. And many times people have spotted their parents and grand-parents. A nice surprise for them.

Great video! Any idea what music is playing at the beginning of the film? It is often played on the USyd carillon for graduation ceremonies

This film mentions the Federal Government giving scholarships. When I was in high-school, I and other students sat an exam for scholarships. It was very different to normal school exams - more focused on measuring intelligence than knowledge of facts. I won a scholarship. However, the Commonwealth Scholarship, as it was known, gave you $300 a year - as I recall $150 for books and $150 towards living expenses. I calculated the absolute minimum amount I could live on and it was about $350 a year. My parents were a couple of battlers. So I never used the scholarship - I went and got a job instead. Best decision I ever made. Many years later my employer paid for me to go to university and kept me on full salary.

The beginning music of this, reminded me of Animal House for some reason.
