As a trucker that hauled steel for 30 years I can tell you the number one cause of deaths is not getting your load centered to gravity . too far back. you flip the truck. too far forward and the first mountain or hill you go down you can't stop. Trust me ,Been there done that. I kissed the ground when I got it stopped. But having a load shift in a Aircraft.. Give me nightmares

Me too 😢 in 1970 we lost our Wichita State University football team in a plane crash in Colorado. I wasn't born then but growing up we'd ask my Mom about the concrete designed structure as we would drive by it at WSU campus and she'd say oh thats the memorial for the football team that got killed. Wasn't until I was older that I googled the story. Sad one, all to take the mountain route.

I was there, saw the entire thing happen. My friend Bob Hudson perished in the crash. Emergency teams had trouble getting to the crash site because they did not have 4 x 4 vehicles, by the time they arrived it was too late. Now all emergency vehicles are 4 x 4’s. The next day all victims were moved by train cars to a makeshift morgue in Evansville. It was an incredibly sad time for family, friends, U of E, the city and still is. 😢

Very moving to see that final black and white image of all the handsome young athletes, in the prime of life, killed in two entirely separate vehicle accidents. What a shocking, tragic waste, to be cut off in their prime like that, their lives and potential over at a stroke, totally at random. That the sole surviving team member - who was not on the plane - was killed in a car crash just two weeks later, is staggering.

1977 a bad year for air crashes: Tenerife, Southern 242, Lynyrd Skynyrd crash and this one. I remember this one well even though I'm not from there. Crashes involving sports teams were bad in the 1970s. In this one of course many want to blame the age of the plane but many old piston engine planes were still flying back then and many hauling passengers on charter flights. In 1992 Evansville saw yet another crash when a C-130 crashed into a motel and restaurant. Another bad one.

"The National Transportation Safety Board blamed the crash on the pilot's failure to remove gust locks on the right aileron and the rudder before takeoff, as well as an overloaded baggage compartment. The NTSB report said that the plane might have been able to stay airborne had only one of the problems existed. As it was, the extra baggage shifted the plane's center of gravity to the back end, and the locked rudder and aileron made it impossible to control the overweight aircraft."

Flew on a DC-3 in 76', Sarasota to Key West, it had a picture window. Air Sunshine, non-pressurized you never went higher than 10k so there was stuff to see if you kept flying. Being in 5 USN squadrons weight & balance is figured for every sortie. Probably easier for a F-4, F-14, A-6 etc, with tons of extra power but it is a part of the 'safe for flight' signature before it goes flying.
