Back in the day, College Hackers had what we called “the Big 3” hackable schools: Thomas Edison, Excelsior, and Charter Oak. These days all three of those colleges have gotten worse, and one college has gotten much, much better. So today we’re reviewing the University of Maine at Presque Isle to see if it has what it takes to be the most hackable college in the world.
We’re giving UMPI a letter grade in four categories: Transfer Friendliness, Cost, Degree Choice, and Student Experience, and we’re gonna turn that into a GPA. The goal for a hackable college is at least a 3.00, so let’s see if UMPI has what it takes.

UMPI is the best! I was able to transfer in over 2.5 years of my degree from Sophia only. I transferred 96 credits. I was also American Council on Education's Student of the Year. I took 13 classes in 8 weeks (39 credits) , and another 6 (19 credits, biology was 4 credits) in 4 weeks, basically finishing my entire BA with them in 12 weeks (3 months). Did an MA with them too and that took 5 months! Afterwards I got accepted to a doctorate program. I just finished my doctorate a few weeks ago from another accredited college. Thanks to UMPI my life is 100% different. I now hold a BA, two MAs, and a Doctorate.

Also for people who get Pell Grants, you usually get money back from UMPI. The Pell Grant will cover 100% of your tuition! My friend got a pell grant, and they sent him a check for the reimbursement.

UMPI is pretty amazing! A couple of years ago, I attended the school for an additional bachelor's degree and was able to finish their History & Political Science program in just 8 weeks. Of course, I had to do a ton of studying everyday, but it's hard to complain when I was able to get a whole degree for just $1,400 (today, this would cost $1,500). Highly recommended school.

@@Xaforn yes I am enrolled for my MBA to start next month. I cast a wide net for grad school, was admitted to all schools I applied for. University of Arizona, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, WVU. I know that list seems random but there were reasons lol. But yes it’s regionally accredited so you won’t have any problems anywhere.

I found that UMPI the only one public university that accept International Students for their Competency Based Education, called YourPace, and I just registered with them, they also have the highest google rating than the other hackable university (4,2), but they have slow email respond than SNHU for example. I believe UMPI have higher credential from the employers.

I switched to a Business Administration degree there and since I was transferring into there and I was a Poli Sci major, they gave me a poli sci minor. Finished in a year. One of your last points of learning sorta on your own is true, and it took me a little bit to get used to it, but once I did I flew through courses. It's a great program.

I just got accepted to the UMPI Your-Pace Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program. I'm coming in with a Master's in Psychology already, so they're probably going to let me transfer in 6 graduate credits. The self-paced option is going to allow me to chunk-it through as many classes I can in the 8 week term. Maybe I can finish this degree in 1-2 terms max. Umpi sounds like they have great things going. But Im going to share my personal and recent experience with them. First off, when you call your academic advisor, they wont awnser or call you back. You end up emailing back and forth and end up more frustrated that ever. Second, they are not as transfer friendly as they say. They literally would not accept Sophias Managerial Account class to cover UMPis managerial accounting class. They also wouldnt accept principles of finance from sophia to cover financial management. This literally sets me back even further in pursuit of education. Third, my advisor asked for a list of the classes I was taking through Sophia. I sent them an unoffical transcript. Her response "please send me a list. It would be easier than reading your transcript". Like the transcript.... is literally a list of the classes I took. I now understand what your saying when you talk about incompetancy on your channel.

If this experience happened in the last month or two, it makes sense. They are in the process of hiring a whole group of new people, and that will take onboarding time. It’s never optimal to give prospective students a bad experience like this, but we give them credit for doing the best they can with the resources they’ve been given in the face of explosive growth. As for the managerial accounting class, it’s actually brand new to Sophia so they’ll need some time. As frustrating as it is that they won’t accept it for now, they aren’t obligated to. Ultimately, each school gets to make its own choices about how to accept these third party courses. We recommend making your hacking plan based on known equivalencies instead of hoping for the best :)

Undergrad credits won’t transfer into a graduate program, but I think you mean will the bachelor’s from UMPI be enough to qualify you for acceptance at a state school, and that answer is yes. :)

I'm annoyed with their transfer credit acceptance. I have an associates degree in accounting, a 3.7 gpa with 21 accounting credits specifically and they're making me take accounting 101 again! They accepted taxation, cost, intermediate, managerial AND accounting 2 but NOT accounting 1 even though I got an A. Makes no sense. 😢

@blaqt107 I copied my comment from the video this channel posted yesterday- My top 2/3 reasons for choosing UMPI over WGU are that you earn a GPA at UMPI, but WGU will be significantly lowering my GPA with their standard 3.0. Also, I estimate it will take me 7-8 months, so I don't want to have to pay for 2 terms at WGU then wait 4-5 months to start a masters. UMPI should be approx 4 eight week terms. I may still go to WGU for an MBA, just not for a bachelor's. UMPI is definitely more hackable in my opinion, and I like that it's a state school while also being less expensive in my case. I'm going for BABA Management and Leadership. I'm burnt out from accounting, I graduate with an AAS in Accounting next week and I'm so tired of it. I plan to earn an MBA from WGU when I finish at UMPI. I'm starting UMPI on May 8, if you have any questions I'm happy to help.

I noticed the Business programs specifically on your pace aren’t aacsb or acbsp accredited, will this affect the overall value of it being a business degree? What about getting into grad school at an online mini ivy league?

Nope! It might affect some top 1% schools, like Harvard or Yale, but not any of the minis that we know of. This is easy to check on the schools admissions requirements pages though. Plan backwards!

Although it is a okay school. The teachers will at times take to long to grade an assignment which will cause you to miss the deadline and have to retake the course. Also, if you are using GI benefits they at times will not certify your courses which can become annoying.

As long as you’re in a state that allows that, for sure! We’ve helped with NJ and TX before, since they have laws like that. :) We did it with the BLS Education degree, too 😉

I think you’re asking how you know which classes to take at the school versus on the hacking platforms. Ideally, you sit down with the degree map from the school and figure out which classes can be transferred in and which can’t, then you hack all the classes first, transfer them into the school, then finish up by taking the classes at the school and graduating.

I wouldn’t say it’s worse, but I would say it’s likely faster, academic rigor wise. WGU has proctored finals and is pretty invested in churning out well-prepared grads. We usually recommend UMPI for speed and WGU for content. But both would get you where you want to go and both have good reps :)

I am currently in the hospital setting, but in Revenue Cycle rather than Accounting, so would want to be well prepared.

There will be credit loss, the programs don’t require quite the same things, but yes you can :) If you’re doing it for the brand name, you might read a bit about the Purdue/Kaplan situation and then decide.

But at any point in time you can apply to Purdue for free and send them transcripts of what you've done and they'll give you back a transfer credit eval that answers your question about how much credit would be lost in the transfer :)

@@RonnieGaal Exactly, you said it well. A UMPI degree will be viewed the same as most other state colleges. The big important things are non-profit status and regional accreditation. Both of which they have 🥳 While there's no guarantee that an employer wouldn't be upset by seeing Sophia on your transcripts, I feel confident saying 95% or more of them won't even know what they are looking at, and the ones who do are unlikely to care. Ultimately, employers are trusting regionally accredited schools to confer degrees when they are earned and aren't looking into it further. After almost 900 clients, we've yet to have someone come back to tell us hacking was a problem for them.
