Thanks for this lesson! Both my father's and mother's families emigrated from Galicia around the turn of the 20th Century. My father's family came from the same village as Bernie Sanders' father, though they were Catholics, not Jews. They consider themselves Polish. My mother's family came from further east in a small town south of Sanok, and they were Lemkos/Rusyns/Ruthenians, and practiced Greek Catholicism. Depending on who you talk to from my mother's family, they call themselves Ukrainian or Lemko. I learned over time what an ethnically diverse region Galicia was, and lessons to those ends are really interesting to me.

My family came from this region as well but when I ask the older members of my family they just say they were Jews and they have no connection at all to the region. I didn't even know the area was modern day Ukraine until this year.

@@shoshanagleit6449 Galicia is basically split between modern day Poland and Ukraine.

Very interesting and well-informed lecturing, but Joshua your maps are a calamity! It's a complex period on many levels and your maps barely support your narrative - too small on the screen, too crowded and your references to it are a bit perfunctory. More maps and slow down! Your narrative with a few less digressions and good instructive maps could really open up this important period if Europen history to a new audience. At the moment it's just unclear to the uninitiated. Yes - former History teacher of 30 years, so I do empathise - there is too much history and not enough time to tell it!

Whew! I really want to learn more about this, but I think I need the 100 level class first. My ancestors immigrated from this region around 1905, and were Catholic. This region is layered in so much fascinating history, and it continues to unfold to this day. I, and others in my family have done some research on our family. I feel we need to understand the contextual history better to truly appreciate what our family went through, and what influenced their decisions.

Very interesting local history. You could have put this local history in a larger context. While most of Europe stuck to traditional ways of growing and making economic goods England was industrializing - the Industrial Revolution - and producing economic goods at levels which left the rest of Europe (and the rest of the world, actually) in the dust. Austria, Poland, Russia etc had to modernize / rearrange their economies to produce things at a much higher level. All the kings and queens you cite were trying to reproduce the Industrial Revolution in their lands - but never came close.

I am from here and my grandfather owned the first KOSHER HOTEL which cartered to orthodox community of South Beach Miami, Florida, USA. Jews could not go into to white wasp hotels at that time so he opened one for the orthodox community of S. Beach. He came to Ellis Island on a cattle boat, and I was told I am Galician and we are not liked in Russia... his story. The hotel is still their on Collins Avenue and is called the PRESIDENT HOTEL.

My grandmother and grandfather were Ukrainians from Galicia. They came to the USA in 1910. They meet on a boat. My grandmother said 40% of her village was Jewish. She was Catholic. She said Jews and Catholics got along. She said the Polish soldiers abused the people. Later I found out Franz Joseph the Emperor was not antisemitic. Unlike his Russian counterpart. Hence Jews were very loyal to Austria-Hungary and did well there.

My family are Jews who left Galicia in around 1920. If I ask about the region all my parents say is their ancestors were impoverished and traumatized by pograms. I've never heard about any positive relationship with non Jews there. My great aunt used to tell me how they were very jealous of German Jews because they were allowed to go to school. It doesn't sound likely they would have agreed with your grandma.

@@shoshanagleit6449 your ancestors are talking about a different time. By the time the left the Jews lost their power in the region. They worked hand in hand with the Poles to keep the Ukrainians down. My ancestors left Galicia in 1898. My grandmother was born in Canada, and was repeating what she was old by her ancestors.
