Univox is a brand I've always wanted to try, but they're nearly impossible to get in France or Europe. Recently, I had a great time playing on a Univox PHZ-1 phase shifter (relabelled BST LM-200 in France). If you're curious, my experimentations are up on my channel.

I modded one of mine to be a common cathode bias on the preamp but grounded it to the board in a place that induced hum. Only one ground connection at the input jacks on these things. I'll eventually get around to putting it back to stock but the poor thing isn't getting played much. They're good sounding amps, just not loud enough. The other amp has a C12S with a large aluminum dust cover and that is definitely the better sounding speaker in my opinion. The one with the aluminum dust cover has front facing controls and negative feedback from the factory.

Brad, have you ever done a video that shows you how to measure the output impedance of an amp without a speaker? There are a lot that suggest they will, but always refer to the speakers. But sometimes amps don’t have speakers attached, you get just a chassis or you may suspect the speaker present is a swap and suboptimal. There is one guy who does use two 4 ohm capacitors to confirm his amp and speaker are 8 ohms, but I wondered if you might have covered that anywhere. If that’s a stupid question, my apologies, but it’s question I have faced and cannot find the answer. Well, not in the context of guitar amps or in language I can understand. Thanks and keep up the excellent work.
@georgekrabs69485 жыл бұрын
More likely 4 Ohm resistors , not capacitors.To find a given output impedance of an output transformer you need to inject an AC voltage through the primary and measure the secondary voltage then work out the turns ratio etc. best left for a pro to do These things can be dangerous for the unskilled and guys like us need to have work to do to survive
5 жыл бұрын
George Krabs You’re quite right, George, I should have put resistor, but I was not long up and hadn’t got my head straight. I’m not trying to deprive any pros of work. I have an old solid state chassis with no indication and can’t find a schematic or even any specs for this model and wondered if there was a way of determining the load and drawn a blank. This isn’t worth spending any money on. I got it for peanuts and will fix a couple of blown capacitors and renew the old ones, too. But it’s just not worth anything much, isn’t very special and holds no sentimental value for me. Or else I’d take it to a pro. Thanks for your response.
@georgekrabs69485 жыл бұрын
@ Being solid state you need to measure the power supply voltage to determine the power handling into a given speaker impedance and subject to the amount of output transistors how low this impedance can be.8 Ohms should be fine in most situations. If it's an IC amp device the specs should be on the web. Cheers mate

Guitologist Channel 2 So, in general - can one do a component replacement from just the topside? I guess it depends on what the solder under there looks like, no? Would you say you could do it in most cases? Almost all? I guess with enough experience you can feel whether it held tight and made contact? If it were a modern board with little machine flowed joints, would you think differently?

What’s the deal with live streams? Is this something people really like or want to see? I’m just curious because frankly I don’t get it. I enjoy KZbin because I like to learn stuff and usually do watching a good quality video, many times HD, with decent audio. So bring in the live feeds with typically lousy video and spotty audio. The first ten minutes of most live feeds are of the host asking if anyone can see and hear them all the while they stare at an unseen co outer screen. The person running the live feed almost always complains that they can’t read the comments fast enough, that they can’t get the camera switcher to work right, and have to restart their software numerous times just to get through a feed. I just don’t see what the attraction is, at least from the perspective of the subscriber. I used to check to see if they were watchable but now I just skip them. Maybe the attraction is that it’s easier for the streamer. They don’t have to work to produce a video and go through the hassles of uploading it, which I can certainly understand.

I cannot answer everyone's questions I get in emails and PMs. This might be a way to interact in real time and maybe get to some of these questions without making hour long edited videos. I can bring up a schematic on the fly and we can all look at it together. I can discuss possible mods, or repairs, or whatever.
