We tend to spray hot when working with hinges or extreme/tight creases in metal. We started doing some toolboxes that require a hot spray, but I tried other methods and found what works best for me is spraying those particular spots hot, cooling the part completely, and spraying back over it. We also don’t have a mil thickness tester though, so I’m not sure if we’re within range or evenly spread, but the product always comes out looking good so I don’t complain

This is a great approach, if you need to get a few tough areas hot, then let it cool and spray the rest, it tends to work great! Glad you are finding the channel useful!

Hey Brotha love the content and just subscribed on KZbin and followed you on IG. What’s your thoughts on spraying forged wheels in a candy transparent rose gold. Thought on prep and durability. The powder coat store sells the powder but doesn’t spec topcoat requirements and UV resistance. Wasn’t sure if you’ve ever used their products and how you liked them. Thanks 🤘🏼

Hello, i have me wheels powder coated. And when the tires where mounted the paint cracked on the edges where the machine pads grabbed it. What culd be the problem? The paint was too tick, or somthing?

I was tought to do most everything hot. But I do it a tad differently. I spray it at 250, then go right back into the oven and let it sit at 380-400 for 10 minutes and I haven't had any issues so far, really the only thing I shoot cold is 2 tones and fades. Not trying to attack or anything. Just putting my way out there. Loves the videos!!

Great video. Question, I noticed that you don't spray powder on the rear area where it meats the wheel hub, but you do spray where the lugs go. Is this a personal preference? I am just wondering why if you like the wheel area to be bare, why not the lug area as well? Thanks.

Love doing black hot you can rally see how it should turn out silver was a pain in the a,r,s,e lacquer had to be put on cold as it would change the shade to grey love doing wheels very satisfying good video

I've been spraying wheels at full temp (400f ) for 27 years with no tip on my Wagner gun. I also hang the wheel through the valve stem hole with a 1/4 20 eye bolt

You KNOW I tried a HOT spray (and TBH...no idea WTF I was doing and I sprayed WAAAAY to hot...being as you was live with me at the time...)....that pushed me away from hot layers... While I have successfully hot coated a part with gloss black now...I must agree...gotta know your gun, you resident area....and a million other possible factors... Can it work in a pinch? Sure....if you know WTF your doing. I feel as I got lucky that day And we know...luck only goes so far.... Thankfully with all the help you have given me since day 1....I’ve gotten a lot better at a lot... I still have a ton to learn....and honestly I turn here to learn most of that. Thanks Shawn .....for helping us newbs out.

Great Job, Man!! I've shot "Hot" a couple of times. It's most certainly nerve wracking. I have a couple of wheels in my shop are demo wheels. I've practiced shooting hot on those rims. One of them is a very basic design, the other is a little more complex. My suggestion for anyone shooting hot is to practice! Do it on something that you own. Also, like Shawn said, get to know your gun! I have a Kool Koat HD currently. I haven't shot hot with that one yet. Still feeling my way around the settings.Thanks again for another great video UKC!!

I've been powder coating for 5 years and always powder coat hot. Never had a problem. I do let the wheel cool down to about 80c before I clear coat tho

Heres one. What would be the proper spacing while doing a bulk of parts. I have 60 rims in a 6x6x8 oven I can fit around 20 rims 2 inch apart. But I dont think that would benefit me if there not curing correctly? 1st I know less space to heat so temp can be reached fast on certain part of the over posible burning the part and on the other side not curing at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I do mine warm since my shop is not very warm I do them at about 100 degrees I get good coverage and adhesion they turn out great

I'm just curious how you track a temperature of a part or a wheel? Because powder has to be baked at X ammount of degrees for X ammount of time. And every part is different, different materials reaches temp. differently too. Is it eyeballig from experience or there is some techniques? Because now I'm just cheking temp with digital temp meter ant start the timer when I see part has reached desired temperature. Also how over baking or under baking affects the end result of paint? infrared thermometer is key, overbaking various a lot by color and chemical make up of the powder. Typically it can effect color and it ALSO can make it more brittle. under curing gives you issues with durability

I shoot almost all cast parts hot to help reduce the outgassing that occurs as the air in porous castings expands when the part is heated. No matter how much pre baking I do, some cast parts just always bubble during the baking process. I found if I heat the part to 400F the pore space has already been heated and the part is in equalization. Because the part is already hot, the air has been expanded from the pores before you coat it which eliminates or minimizes pinholes and bubbles. My question is regarding your comment about spraying the part hot and then letting it fully cool down before you put the item back into the oven for a full cure. What are your thoughts on allowing the part to fully cool down before placing it back into the oven for a full cure vs putting it back into the oven while the part is hot?

honestly I dont have any real thoughts on it. I have friends who do it the same way I do, I have friends who throw it right back in the oven. I would say until you find a reason NOT TO, then keep doing it

Have you ever had reason to use separate hoses for clears , Metallics, blacks etc? New to the hopper style setup and cleaned my hoses like your earlier vid on cleaning and still had a little contamination...

I use about 10 different hoses. Basically to eliminate those problems. I have one for black, silver/grey, red, blue/purple, green, yellow, orange, pink, clear and clear with flake, oh and white. so 11 lol

Depends on the wheel, despite being "old" its been well maintained and I do have nylon wheel protectors I put on occasionally, or shop rags. I knew this tire was going to go on easy so I didnt have to worry about it slipping or anything.

use a competent tire person. Any machine made in the last 15 years is designed to basically be touchless for the wheel. So it shouldnt mess it up ever.

I hot flock everything. I have made a few modifications to my gun so I can better control the amount of powder coming out of my gun. Getting the right MIL thickness is my only concern with hot flocking.

hot flocking can work in most cases but certain colors stand a zero percent chance of turning out well when hot flocked

It you shoot the base hot... Put it in the overn for like 10 min . Take it out let it cool for like 10 min. Shoot the clear...then bake for 18 to 20

That tire looks worse than the original powder coat did. I’m surprised he wanted it. The Ciara you did looks great. I’ll hot coat small objects sometimes, but never have done it on something large. I do glass and you have to hot coat that.

When shooting wheels I always heat them up for around 8 mins at 400. Shoot them hot for the first coat and follow up with a dry coat once they've cooled down a bit.
