The idea Bungie would not have D3 on a burner at all is wild. And Pete deflecting with "Too many projects" is absolute bullshit. As the CEO, he is SOLELY responsible for signing off on those. Sony needs to give ol' Pete the crispy boot.
@ShadowDreamer1004 ай бұрын
I believe it. They were using Destiny as it's ONLY revenue stream, and used it to fund everything else. They took WAY too many risks greenlighting projects that never saw return on investments, unlike Riot for example, who at least puts games into LoL itself with new modes every so often. D1 and 2 barely broke even out of the gate and collapsed but both games eventually climbed back out and up. They can't afford to do that while shelving major development on D2, because then they'd be forced to only stick with the newer game even if it was dead, and the studio would be dissolved. They very much should have gone the opposite way, using smaller projects to release new products and try to supplement D2's income. The only reason I think Pete isn't stepping down RIGHT NOW may be because there isn't anyone that could be a good replacement without an external hire, and the studio does have a very specific workplace culture that will need to be matched well with any incoming replacement.

The biggest red flag was how much worse the monetization became right after Bungie left Activision. The Bungie management was more greedy than Activision ffs. :)

And we as fans were justifying the initial bump in cosmetic monetization as "Bungie is by themselves now, not getting funding and support from a company that's overseeing them" but then it never ceased and instead got more egregious and more confusing to navigate as time went on. Ironically, I'd like to believe Witch Queen's release with the new Dungeon Pass separate from the expansion or the seasons is what tipped players off the most to the executive greed happening at the studio. I can't remember if that's the same point as the paid event cards coming out for the seasonal events, but that was certainly another red flag that's been pointed out over the years. It's always sad to see corporate greed dismantling and dissolving otherwise great games, companies, and studios

Something also to think about which is rather grim is one of the major reasons Activision released Bungie from their contract is their internal projections showed Destiny declining in popularity and reach rather than growing and that currently lines up with what we know about how expansions have been underselling year over year. We are sorta reaching the point Activision predicted which is diminishing returns and no real growth

It makes total sense given that while Destiny and 2 were very successful at launch, it immediately showed steep decline and couldn’t recover from that. Although Activsion often makes their targets so high, that even if a COD game makes 500 million in one week is considered disappointing, they still gave bungie a lot of resources that needed to be compensated for. This franchise doesn’t have the universal appeal or accessibility to make it sustainable.

I finally let go and I actually truthfully feel good about it ever since I did, which admittedly was before the layoffs and originally had nothing to do with it. Although that stuff reinforced my position of not coming back and only made my decision feel even more validated. I know exactly what you mean about the sunk cost fallacy. Then there's the FOMO, the addiction even when people don't want to admit it, content creators have their livelihoods tied to one game, etc.; but I'm not buying this thing about supporting what teams are left anymore as I feel like that's just an excuse to justify someone sticking around even after all this happened. Sure, I got my ending with Final Shape and that makes it easier to let go as selfish as that was. I just can't support this anymore. How many times are we going to do this? That old saying about the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. At this point if people actually want change then they need to be part of the change, and that includes devs going on strike. If the devs continue to make a product that the execs can sell and people buy it then that only sends the message that Bungie can sunset half the game, fire half the employees over and over again, and raises prices year after year and people will still pay. Bungie doesn't want their current player base, they said themselves that the player base is skewed too old and they want younger players which means the game is full of hopelessly addicted people who have stuck with it for years and Bungie now realizes they can do less than the bare minimum and those players will still pay while they try to make other games to attract that young audience they're seeking. All that investment into the psychology of keeping players hooked seems to have paid off enough, at least for the execs. Luckily, I have some experience with kicking addiction and I can't recommend people giving it an earnest shot enough. I'm just not buying this pretend virtue signaling to strangers online for validation to feel better about playing a game they're hooked on when this keeps happening and we all know it's only a matter of time before it happens again. If people really care then they will let it go and send the message that we won't stand for this.

I quit around September of last year. It was mostly due to burnout (I'd been playing Destiny at least weekly since TTK), but the first round of layoffs was also a pretty strong nudge. I didn't play again until a week after TFS dropped, and I've been enjoying the game a lot more. Skipping a season and a half kind of broke me through the FOMO barrier; I'd now "missed out," and realized there wasn't really anything to fear about it. Take some time for yourself. Play a different game, or watch a TV show, or do a hobby you enjoy. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a Destiny detox. Maybe you'll come back, or maybe you'll find something in that time that fulfills you more than Destiny currently can. You're under no obligation to stay, even if it may really feel like you are sometimes.

Personally, I’ve been very at odds with the game since the whole sunsetting and DCV debacle. Bungie spinned things as they did and some content creators even went as far along as justifying the technical reasons and that other MMOs have done it blah, blah, blah. But, ultimately, it’s not a good look to take away content people have paid for and cannot replay ever again. Yes, even if we Red War vets many never play said old content ever again, why can’t new players? Why must they suffer the godawful New Light experience instead of starting their D2 journey as many of us did. Especially if there’s still bits of Y1 and Y2 content still peppering the game, narrative sense be damned. And sunsetting and the ever-limited size of our vaults made loot chase irrelevant to me since then. I busted my ass getting a then god-tier weapon? Irrelevant. Not only we did Bungie nerf it to the ground for the sake of power creep, they also made it as to being unable to be carried forward for future content. And to add insult to injury, they made new versions of some of those weapons with Into The light, they also reverted said sunsetting with FS, making the deletion of some favorite weapons years ago even more painful, regardless of how good or bad they’d be in 2024. That is the sentiment I’ve seen online from lapsed players that scampered off Destiny years ago. That is part of the reason as to why I can’t in good conscience recommend the game to a new player now. Especially with such asinine monetization to access content in an incomplete game. Whereas, say, as with Warframe - like it or not - you have a clear, lengthy career path, with old content coexisting with the new, and an absurd level of customization and buildcrafting that -if you play your cards right - won’t cost you a single cent to do experience.

For people aligned with Marty it seems they ignore all of his Diva behavior that got all the trouble started in the first place (despite being righteous in the initial MotS publishing stuff). 2 things can be true, and the reality of who someone is and what their impact was isn’t invalidated or erased because of how you happen to feel about something,

I would love to raid but don't want to spare the time both learning and teaching (not out of malice, just not enough hours in the day), and the way the story will progress for the foreseeable future is just hyper extended seasons where I'm forced to grind out the same mission that's exciting maybe the first 3 times I participate. And the seasonal events are quite literally just copy-pasted from previous years without no tweaks. The best looking gear has almost all been locked behind Eververse and "microtransactions," and now shaders that should be unlockable from endgame activities are thrown in there too. Unless there's a new full expansion announced, or D3, then I just can't see myself returning to Bungie's games. And if either are announced, I need to see concrete things and massive systems changes

While I agree with Byf that the C-levels are the problem with Bungie, I completely disagree that the heads of department aren’t part as well. Sure, music is always good, so is art. @lukestarford76084 ай бұрын
Aye. Luke Smith was always a problematic figure. From day 1 in fact where a problematic comment he made caused a community uproar to the point that he had to apologies for it. We gave the benefit of the doubt. The problem with the Destiny community is that we are the most forgetful, complacent and hypocritical community out there. In year 1, whenever Bungie tried to do anything shady, they were rightful called out for it. The community were united in this aspect and Destiny youtuber didn't have monetised benefit or programs to benefit from. If bungo did a poop on bed, we made sure they would know we saw and wouldn't stand for it. We were proactive in wanting them to improve. However, this mentality went away slow over time. At first, we grew complacent in Taken King where after people treated a decent DLC as the second coming of Christ despite it quality being the same as House of Wolves. Whenever Bungo did something or Luke Smith said something that was shady, lies or bad practice. Majority of the community just ignore it or brushed it aside. The people who did challenge because they saw through the BS were shouted down at. D2 launch into Forsaken is repeat of my previous paragraph but we some how became even more complacent into allowing Bungie to get away it, we became forgetful over the History of Bungie bad practice and instead became so delusion over the fact that we our in the "Golden Times of Destiny". People ate up Luke Smith lies. The quality of DLC never increase but instead decreased before stagnating. Frankly I wouldn't call Witch Queen a good DLC. To be blunt, the people to blame for this are KZbinr like Datto, Byf and anyone that is bound by contract to Bungie. By being contractually bound to Bungie, a lot of KZbinr and Streamer mentally change their tune because of how it work. Bungie gives these youtube a lot of benefits like visiting the studio or going to events. To allows them to release early footage which financially benefits them. These people benefits from the contract so long as they don't speak too critically. If they do, then they get a warning from Bungie before getting the contract terminated on repeated warning or too harsh criticism. Bungie would blacklist which would financial impact the KZbin. This heavily impacts the KZbinr view on things because it very Behavioural theory. KZbinr are rewarded for speaking positively about Destiny, for speaking less critically about Destiny, about Bungie and by extension the bad practices and it reinforced over time. While the negative are fear or reprimanded into them, they fear the lost of the rewards. Datto, Sweaticle, or any of the Destiny Program youtuber can't their view aren't swade by Bungie due to how reward programme with games work. Bungie smartly got the more popular KZbinr on their side and lessen their critical view through this. And due to this and how the destiny community love to regurgitate popular youtuber takes is how we got to this point. Luke Smith got off too easy, too many times and it no one but our fault.

The more i hear about what Riot is doing the more i think that Bungie was trying to follow in their footsteps. Riot has like 20 incubation projects, and they have that whole division of making music, and film/tv series. I think Bungie totally forgot that Riot has an infinite money machine in Tencent. So they started burning through crazy amounts of Sony money to no avail.

Destiny has higher resoulution graphics, meaning in models, textures etc there's a bigger storage cost. Additionally, Destiny has more cutscenes, voice lines, animations n what not. That also is gonna bloat files. However the biggest factor is the engine. The WoW Engine was likely built under the idea that expansions would happen for years. Destiny 1's engine was built to last 2-3 years. The engine was then upgraded for Destiny 2 which was meant to last another 2-3 years. At this point, to get the engine to a point where it can handle all of the files, systems and graphics, it would need an overhaul big enough that you'd might aswell make a new game. (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about anything I have like only 10 hours on WoW)

But then my feeds started to get filled with a change when talking about the episodes. NGL, because of those talking points on the episodes, and my motivation decided to dwindle. But then the news of Dylan coming back as Community Manager brought me new hope..... which barely lasted a month when Bungie did their big layoff, which completely made me lose interest in the game. The game is old and looks its age. The player base is also now older than most games and new players, especially younger people (12-18) don't want to play this game (especially because it's so puzzle heavy AND has the worst new player experience I've ever seen). Also what gave Destiny the edge (especially D1) was the gun play and feel of weapons. Well that is definitely no longer the case as even CoD, IMO, has better feel guns that are more responsive and just feel better. We also now know for 100% certainty that evey single expansion has sold less than the previous one and it makes sense. D3 needed to start back in 2018 and now there's literally no one there who played a big part of Destiny beginnings and it shows. The game is a shadow of itself and honestly it kinda sucks now.

The reason expansions don't sell as much is because the new player experience sucks, sunsetting content, and how expensive the expansions are. And that is without buying the passes for dungeons and raids. When I first found out about dungeon/raid passes I was like "why do I need to buy this? I just got the expansion - this should be included". No expansion is worth $100 dollars. I'm sorry. Destiny expacs don't sell because it's just too expensive to get into. I eventually got into the game because my friends play it. But once they got off I stopped playing. I can't get my other friends to play it because of the reasons stated above.

Am I the only one who thinks we shouldn't give Bungie praise for TFS? It was good... for Bungie, and that is the problem. If you compare it to other games it's on the higher end of mid, so when people act like it is some groundbreaking gaming achievement, I don't get why. It would be nice if that was the level of content we were getting (minimum) most of the time and not like 30% of the time. That is what the community deserves, given how much they've still supported Bungie, despite all the scumbaggery. Years of being strung along and convinced that if we just keep supporting them, their next thing will be so much better. The truth is, most of it wasn't. The game has a unique vibe and gameplay that hasn't been replicated yet, that is the only reason anyone still plays it. From what I can tell, like 2/10 people have any interest in Marathon. If they neglected and screwed up Destiny, why would I want to jump into another franchise that they can just decide isn't worth their best efforts? All the money wasted on games that never saw the light of day, while Destiny languished for most of its lifespan. So much potential wasted.

@MandoPrime1138 This is a long one, but this is what I see on that situation. If you wish to read it, go for it, if you don't, just don't I don't care, these are just my thoughts on that matter in detail. Also as a heads up if a comment starts or ends with an "lol" be fore warned that I will not read it. I do remember him saying that now. Well based on my experience in politics by proxy of family, it's an incredibly messy set of business to say the very least and just because someone says they're right wing, does not guarantee that they are "right wing" if that makes sense and an aspect that worries me all the time as well. "Right Wing" actually means that Government has limited power over American lives but however you take that I am an American first and whatever else second. Plus those Right Wing Extremists are just Anarchists under a politically correct name or an arbitrary buzz word. Also if Marty is in a position of power and he does propose policies that I can suspect based on his experience and what Bungie has done to him after he was let go, I can suspect a few of those may be legislation that puts executives feet over the fire like Pete Parsons, because who better to make effective legislation in the video game industry, that someone who has lived it. He has been a composer of Bungie for many years, Bungie or more specifically Activision at the time fired him that I suspect they saw him noticing some red flags that Activison saw as a potential problem, he was legally attacked him by a legal order to destroy the music he had and composed by the way by Bungie and now I can guess that he may be running for office and odds are the only argument anyone he is running against has will be something like "video games cause violence" or whatever dime-a-dozen excuse they have. Marty said something about “Be nice to the goose". It means a goose produces golden eggs, be nice to the goose and it’ll give you more golden eggs. If you’re not nice, they won’t give you more." and then the head Activision guy said "Yeah, I like that story… but sometimes there’s nothing like a good foie gras [a food made of duck or goose]." This was before the Activision acquisition. I know this was a long one, but as Byf is good with the lore that can be long like The Last Word vs Thorn story that is a personal favorite or Dynasty that was a master piece by Byf, but I am someone that thinks through this thoroughly, and I do speak about this stuff for good reason and a "Lore Master" of sorts when it comes to politics whether it be Capital Hill, Companies, School, and ect. Is it mind numbingly boring? Yes. Is it also good to have at least one person looking into it who actually knows how to look into it to seek the truth? Also, yes.
