What is your favourite wide angle lens for your Lumix?
@bburnsey Жыл бұрын
I really like my 8-18, but I have been eyeing up the 9mm. Not as big as the 8-18, better low light, but not sure I can justify owning both. I do prefer primes.
@ImageMaven Жыл бұрын
@@bburnsey If you can compare those two lenses side by side in a camera shop or from friends it might help you decide. Lumix has events at shops all the time too. Kind of like test driving a car. Sometimes it’s just how it feels on the camera body that helps you decide too. But I also say, love the lens you have and use it!

9mm Leica f1.7 is my favorite lens period right now.
@joestrahl6980 Жыл бұрын
The only ultra wide lens I have (which, by default, makes it a favorit?) is the 7 artisans 7.5 f2.8. I thought it would be a really niche use case, therefore the relatively inexpensive only manual focus lens. Turns out that I use it more often than I thought. As a university instructor at times I put it on my G80 (G85) to use diring hybrid lectures so students off campus can see me as I walk around and lecture.... I bought it before there was a 9mm from Lumix.... The 7 artisans lens is built like a tank and is the hemvist, by far, prime that I have.

What work ethic the beaver has, he / she was not going to let the materials go 😂. Hope you were safe from bears out in the wilds. Coming from the UK, we have no worries about such things. Great video again, Marlene. I have 7.5 Laowa, a very nice lens with a bit more width than the 9mm, but for me, just the job. Thanks again.
@ImageMaven Жыл бұрын
I know, very persistent beaver! Being so close up to all that stick handling was fantastic to see. There are bears in that area, but by then they should have been hibernating. (Hopefully.) But as a rule I have bear spray handy when hiking all times of the year. If any two-legged predators threaten me, I'll not hesitate to use it on them too. Yes, that Laowa 7.5 is rather popular, and I did have a good think about it, because of that extra width. I was so used to my 7-14 that the 9mm seemed quite tight when I first started using it. Needed to back up an extra step or two from my subject. But I'm used to it now.

What a great couple of wildlife close encounters, especially with the beaver. We have some otters in my regions of the gulf coast but you need the 100-400mm to have any chance of photographing them. My wide-angle lens of choice is the Lumix/Leica 8-18mm f2.8-f4. Very flexible and sharp and the variable aperture is not a problem since I tend to shoot mostly at F5.6.

Hi Bruce, Yes, it was quite a day out on the trails. I happened upon a mink a few months ago, also quite close up. But I was actually quite nervous. You never know when these wild animals will turn on you. Luckily this beaver was very busy building it's house. So yes the 100-400mm is good to have if you want to keep a safe distance. I'd like to try that 8-18mm some day. I heard from someone that is was quite large and heavy for M43. But a nice range that I know I'd find useful. Great to hear from you again. Cheers!

I usually have a long telephoto on my camera (OM-1) and don't often need a really wide angle. But this lens is so small and light I can keep it in the bottom of my bag and forget about it, until I do want it. I also carry the tiny Olympus 60mm macro lens in the bag for similar reasons, in case I suddenly want a macro shot. Both lenses together are no more bother to carry around than a spare battery or two plus the other odds and ends I usually carry. And both are fun to use and do what they do perfectly well for my needs.

The 15mm f1.7 without flash would be good too, but almost not wide enough. Depends how crowded the party is. That was such a good livestream! Some great questions and topics were covered. Sean seems revitalized after the Lumix retreat. And yes, it's nice to be noticed by our community on those livestreams too. 😃 Cheers!

Great video footage of the deer and beaver. I had the 8-18mm Panasonic Leica that I used occasionally for pet photos and landscapes but I always had it set on 8mm. I sold it recently and may consider the 9mm if I was convinced I would use it more. This year I have used my G9 with the 12-60 and 100-400mm PL lenses 100% of the time with no regrets.
@ImageMaven Жыл бұрын
Funny you say that. With my 7-14mm I keep it on 7mm. And I almost bought the Laowa 7.5 .... but the MF only, deterred me. Skateboarding moves pretty fast, and I can't always pre-determine where my subject will end up! I'm happy with the 9mm for that reason, but I do miss those extra 2mm of focal length! Needed to slightly adapt my shooting method. I have that 12-60mm too and it's a great all around lens, but weirdly I seem to have the 9, 15 or 100-400mm permanently on the three cameras I use.

I still don't have a super wide lens for my G9. The widest I have is the 12-60mm. I was thinking about getting the Olympus 8-25, but the 9mm seems to be interesting as well, especially for low light with f/1.7
@ImageMaven Жыл бұрын
I have the Pana Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 and the Lumix 7-14mm f/4, so the f1.7 speed of this 9mm lens was definitely the deciding factor. That, and the "nearly macro" close up focussing sealed the deal.

What does the extra width of 8-9mm add? Not criticising, genuinely curious. I have a couple of zooms that open to max 12mm myself - this vid has me wondering if I should add something wider down the road.

@ImageMaven Жыл бұрын
Agree! You may not need the speed. You might also consider a zoom like 12-60mm as that will mean less gear to carry around on your holiday. That's also a very good lens. And it's 2.8-4 so not the fastest but definitely fast enough for fair weather shooting.

Thanks for the reply and the video. I noticed the other day that you did a review on the OM-1 camera. I heard on another KZbin channel that the new Panasonic G9v2 is better, but only because the OM-1 has old firmware, and that when OM-System makes the necessary update, the OM-1 will outperform the G9v2. What do you think about it?

If, due to my laziness, I go out into the forest once in a while, then no rush, only relaxation. By that I mean that I'm not that interested into fastest autofocus on the planet and the latest video logs. I'm only interested in the quality of the still photo. The best possible image quality, sharpness and color rendering. It is the sharpness and color presentation that seems to me to be better in sample photos with the Olympus OM-1. And since I saw people photographing forests with the cheaper OM-5, I really liked the colors and their generation with this model. This is how I answer. I hope I understood your question correctly. Fisheye lenses typically have that exaggerated circular wide look to them. But now there are rectilinear lenses that correct for that distortion. I think it's something that goes in and out of style, depending on the subject. The skateboarders I know, love the fish-eye look, but it can get tiresome as every photo and video clip looks the same. I'm going to opt for the Laowa 7.5 mm for it's macro-like capabilities. The G100 is such a useful little camera I can't believe I overlooked it for so long. Thanks to your videos I'm a proud owner of one.

That lens is a very good choice too. Yes, I love my G100. So handy and inconspicuous. I think I need to do a few more videos about it.

Me: buys a 300mm lens and teleconverter to photograph deer Marlene: photographs deer with a 9mm I'm doing something wrong here. 😅

Haha. Thank you for my morning smile. And I’m sure you will put that long lens to good use.

All be it auto focus is not really important in a wide lens. I have the Laowa 7.5mm. Don’t think the Pana 9 was available at the time or probably would have bought it. All my other lenses are Panasonic. Can’t go wrong with either lens.

Yes, I hear you. I forgot to mention that the 9mm has AF and the Laowa doesn't. Thanks for stopping by Art!
