Holy shit. I think this is it I think this is the piece I was missing. All others were saying its something to do with the soft pallet, but going from E to A and then rising on the A into the soft pallet, I almost did it. This video is being saved, and this is being added to my daily practice. Thank you

I bought "The Four Laws of Vocal Technique" and it was absolutely worth the money. The lessons are ridiculous and weird which actually make it fun! You can feel the sensations that you're "tricking" us into achieving with those exercises so its instantly rewarding. I run through all of them before lunch then again after lunch. I've only started this 6 days ago and its made a MASSIVE difference. I can sing all of Def Leppard - Love Bites. I could never do that before even with straining. I can also sing Frozen - Let It Go without having to push myself for the high notes. They just happen as easily as the low notes. I actually paid for 10 private lessons months ago with a local teaching school here in Melbourne and they were useless (no mixed-voice techniques) and cost a lot more than these lessons.

Great video, Tyler. I printed those same in images from Ken’s book (after you sent me the link) they’re hanging in my music room now. The exercise in this video is very helpful, I will make another short clip so I can practice daily with you (once lesson a week is not enough)… I mean, I’m sure it is but you know me , all or none. I’m obsessing daily over getting this mixed voice down.

how to come over the flip if you have a flip/falsetto voice?

Is this what Elvis is doing in Heartbreak Hotel? Also does he transition out of mixed voice when he goes lower or does he stay in mixed voice? My voice is somewhat cracking when I go down. I feel like my mixed voice isn’t a meaty at Elvis’. Mine sounds closer to falsetto though it’s not. Also it’s much more quiet. To get the mixed voice more meaty, does this require some muscular development?

Hey Tyler, When it comes to high tongue dorsum/tongue fronting, does it also involve raising the larynx a little? Because I have started to think that raising the larynx is not as unhealthy or inefficient as some sources claim (such as SLS). On the contrary, it seems to help us produce higher notes more easily.
@tylerwysong
@tylerwysong 10 ай бұрын
It definitely gets you away from the dopey sound!

So, can I safely say that raising the larynx does not mean I am using the extrinsic muscles to sing? @@tylerwysong

@@chrischeng6431 Well I don’t know that I would go that far. I don’t think it’s that simple. As long as what you’re doing sounds good and feels good then it is good. Make sure it feels sustainable and repeatable!

For me it feels like there's two kinds of mixed voice: 1. pressed which people usually associated with belting (e.g. Justin Bieber singing a G4, Aj and Nick carter from Backstreet Boys singing their high notes, Steven Tyler screaming, Spongebob laughing), and 2. Flow phonation kinda like what you are doing (I think that's what you call it?) singers like Calum Scott, JC CHASEZ do that. There's a certain sound quality texture to these two things and feeling I feel. The first one feels more nasally like when you plug your nose in a swimming pool not letting water in or even when you're being carefree and "drunk" being loud and the 2nd one feels like the area in the back of my mouth stretches and adjusts kinda like a sphincter 😅 Also the first one feels like what my voice defaults to when I speak really high whereas the second one like yours really needs lots of training and mental training as well. Also, first one feels more limiting in pitch whereas the second one can take it higher and higher much more easier without force.

Yes totally agree with all of this!! Yes JC Is a great example of an amazing mix voice for sure!!

I’ve been developing strong falsetto by playing a ”lip-trumpet”, a kazoo resonator made from lips. That allows me to sing wide range, but the falsetto gap is still there. If I sing with words, it becomes yodling, playing around with that falsetto gap. It is also good skill to learn to make octaves or fifths with that gap. Now I started write own songs, and realized, that I can include all good ecercises into my songs.

But please please Tyler (LOL) not "Roxanne," arguably Sting's worst songwriting example-though-he's-brilliant-of course. Imagine that "song" done acoustically with just chordal instrument backing . . . ugh. May I recommend for you instead, Michael MacDonald's "I Can Let Go Now" for instance? kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoSQqWyVat1-jsU
