Ive been in a similar situation trying to help someone stuck in cold water, and yeah, when a boat came to finally help, and I was able to sit down and process what just happened, I cried like a little baby for at least 10 minutes. It hits you like a freight train, uncontrollable.
@TrappedinSLC11 ай бұрын
That's not at all uncommon in emergency situations overall. Most of the people I know who are some kind of first responder just plan for it - you do the job and then you let your emotions hit you after.
@stamrly4184 жыл бұрын
Sitting in a chair safe and comfortable, this has my eyes welling up. The RNLI crews do and are trains to respond but crews of other boats are not. The lack of training was no barrier to this young lady. The young can do, the young can respond. THEN to go on and volunteer is testament to what can and will change your life. Well done ... very well done. Amacf

Of course what Holly did was amazing, but also huge credit to the captain of the clipper. He / She heard the mayday on the radio, got to the scene first, manoeuvred the huge catamaran next to the casualty and held it there next to the river bank so the crew could grab hold.

I hope the owners of the "clipper" take this event to heart, and upgrade the MOB training and equipment on their vessels. It's almost impossible for even several people to lift a person who can't assist himself that high out of the water without mechanical aids. The "Lifesling" or similar rescue device, and davits/hoists are important tools to have at the ready when a man-overboard emergency occurs.
@seikibrian86414 жыл бұрын
@heldgop That might indeed work. It could help prevent hypothermia, buying time until more help arrived.
@benwilson61454 жыл бұрын
Agree, how can you run a passenger vessel without the ability to rescue a passenger from the water? There are many rescue devices available on the market. Its unacceptable and totally unfair on Holly and the crew as well.

I agree with you that it is fantastic and much needed but the problem I have with this is that so few people in Britain can swim(this is according to things I have heard and not researched) I mean I live in the Netherlands and here there is a close to 100% of people who have completed like a swimming test at least on a basic level and like 50% up to a level where part of the test is swimming 12 m underwater with like a full winter outfit on including your coat. From what I have heard only like 20% or less of britain is at the level of the basic swimming test in the Netherlands.

The company my dad works for has a points based scheme for a lot of positions when they hire. (For example you get points for having additional qualifications, you get points depending on how well you did on the entry test, you get points for expierience in the field and so on...) When my dad became a departement head, he insisted that - at least for his departement - the policy be amended and points would be granted for serving in a voluntary capacity such as RNLI, voluntary firefighters or similar things. He argued (and ultimately the bosses agreed) that this not only shows integrity and dedication, but also a character able and willing to work in a team and not meassure his success on how much better he does than the others in his team. Not to mention, people who maintain a position in those organisations are more reliable, honest and skilled in professional communication. Long story short: She would get a boat load of points.
