What part of mysterious and cryptic do guys not understand? I'm sure they made her like that by design, probably something we'd go deeper into in the dlcs. She already does talk to you, but idk what else she could say aside from filler/flavour talk. If you've played games like Skyrim, you'll know how tiring it gets eventually if she just babbled without prompt. Besides I really don't even know what stories she could tell when the girl has some sort of amnesia. The only thing she can tell you about is the Erdtree and Marika because clearly she has connections with those.

It's crazy that Melina never really did anything with us besides talking about her Goal and History. She could have pointed out things when we ride beside it on Torrent or be a Summonable Ash like Teche but for the entire time and not just inspecific Areas. So much potential and it got wasted.

I would love to have the option to hear her talk about the various places we travel to and bosses we face. You could absolutely balance her presence in various ways, like how your flasks are halved in multiplayer, or having it cost a Rune Arc in place of a Great Rune.

I honestly can't feel for her when she burned the erdtree and dissapears, i honestly thought this companionship what was missing and it's a damned shame bcuz she is really interesting, you can only talk to her in specific places and feel missed her alot most of the time in your journey, Hewg as a blacksmith feels more of a companion than her to his hostility towards us and acknowledge us as a lord in the end has more character and bond.

So I just finished my first playthrough, I save Melina by finding the three fringes. But I also did the Millicent quest line to get the God needle to tame the Frenzied Flame so I don’t kill torrent. And I also did ranni’s quest and made her moon queen. So I saved Melina, I feel like fromsoft should make the NPC a little more intricate, cuz no body reacts to you taming the FF. Like I think that’s the most important thing. You were on the verge of become Lord of FF and you don’t cuz you go to time vortex to use the needle. There should be little more reward for doing all that and saving Melina.

I know she has dialogue in all of the churches (among other places) but they should've made Melina appear when you activated a grace she has dialogue at. Most of the time I activate like 10 graces in between resting, skipping a mountain of dialogue because the Cerullian beetles give more than enough refills to sustain you.

Imagine if Melina had been used in a similar way to how Io was in Code Vein where you could have them travel as a sort of companion and help you fight if you wanted to. I could imagine her commenting on certain events like fighting Radahn or meeting Ranni and getting the chance to bond with the character. That way when [REDACTED] happens, it means more to the player overall.

I’m really hoping for DLC where we visit past fromsoftware locations reimagined in an open world setting, where we can team up with old pals like Onion Lad, Tarkus, Solaire, etc. fight old bosses like Sif, Ornstein and Smogh, Artorias (maybe even get to save him), etc. ether that or at the very least give us armor and weapons from the past games. Or they could give us some fight clubs where we have to earn past gear by fighting old bosses, I’d be down for that too. Look as someone who made a build back in Dark Souls 1 that involved using Black Iron Tarkus armor (and the Grass Crest Shield) I just want his armor back (and the grass crest shield) so I can have my build (as long as they buff it as the Dark Souls 3 version of it sucked so much)

Cough cough, Just gonna put it out there... I'd say DS1 is REAL close to Open World, as you can do fun shenanigans like using the New Londo door to get to the Valley, then to Darkroot, then to Parish without even touching Undead Burg. It's why I love the game so much. Sure, a fair bit of story is locked until you get the Bells rung, then you grab the Lordvessel, but you're locked out of Leyndell, Mountaintops, Haligtree, and Farum Azula until you nab two Great Runes in Elden Ring, so I'd say they're roughly equal like that. In any case, modding sounds more up your alleyway. Someone could probably find a way to port DS1 maps into ER's game world and it not be too hard. We've already got people porting in old armor sets from previous games, so it's likely that if you really wanted it, you could learn to mod yourself or pay somebody to make a mod like that. Or, befriend them and just get them to do it because it'd be an awesome passion project. Look into it! Maybe you'll find a hobby in it, or make a friend, maybe both, or maybe you won't get anywhere. But that's a great idea, hope it gets something out of it.

@@KaroxNightshade I know that DS1 is basically open world (and I agree) I just want some of the older armor sets and weapons in Elden Ring so I can PvP with it, as DS1 Remastered is a dead game, and a lot of stuff that was brought from DS1 into DS3 (a game that isn’t dead yet) was heavily nerfed, like my favorite Black Iron Tarkus Armor, and my favorite weapon of all time the Demon GreatAxe (love that thing so much and they ruined it in DS3 by making it a pyromancy weapon) Though as you mentioned with modding being the likely path I should take, will I get banned for modding in weapons and armor? Keep in mind I’ll stick to Offline mode as I know even if I’m not cheating FromSoftware really don’t like people modding there games while online. Even though I think that’s dumb as I think it would be really cool to co-op with a good friend of mine, him rocking Giant dad build (if mods for that exist) and me rocking the Iron Tarkus Armor

And this is why I still stand by the notion, that Code Vein has some of the best ideas in a souls game. The addition of a companion NPC that can help you fight, and even somewhat keep you from dying, may make the game... trigger warning for hardcores, *esier*, but it also just makes the game more engaging and endearing. I care a little more about playing it because I like the experince of exploring hostile worlds alongside a friend group.

I liked Code Vein alot, but it had alot of issues with trying to tie the lore in with God Eater and the fact it seemed to have inconsistencies in writing and dialogue. The fact that alot of NPCs are named based on their personality is a big example. Like who could forget about Arrogant Revenant? Idk I liked the games story and system, but it seemed like the devs didn't expect it to be relevent as it became. The partner system definitely was the best part, and the game has untapped potential if it get sort out its in universe lore. Elden Ring they really only missed out on Melina's Character, but it makes sense since most of the maidens they have written before like the Emerald Herald and DS3 Fire Keeper have always been stoic, and almosy emotionless with minor plot relevance and mainly only towards the end of the game. They existed mainly just to tell the player where to go next and level them up well giving some vague monologue. They went the same route with Melina then realized how pointless that is with how Elden Ring is built primarily around exploring and the Grace lines. Idk they tried to pull the concept of Oscar in DS1 that was scrapped with Melina? Someone who journeys along the same path as you but always shifts to the other side to act as a mirror? Idk Melina is a complicated character as if you don't have alot of the information that is very easy to miss then its hard to justify her actions as more than just being an asshole.

@@francisharkins I'm not saying code vein was a better *game*, I'm saying it has better *ideas.* Companion NPC's, equipable builds, and the ability to recover half of your lost souls at no risk, but forever losing the other half, are in my opinion improvements on the system, better engaging the player and eliminating a lot of the *frustration* of the souls formula. Could those ideas be better executed, in a better game? Absolutely. Is Elden Ring trash, because it's basically another souls game with the same arbitrary system with a handful of new mechanics? No. I just wish the souls formula could improve by more then a half-step each game, and seeing worthwhile improvements in a weird god eater Spinoff makes me a little sad.

Especially when recovering your characters blood code and not having any different impacts on the story besides world building and the lack of conflict between the player and thosw who know the truth. Its Complicated but just like Souls its not handed to you, you have to come to your own speculations. Loved Code Veins gameplay and system though, it flows better. Though to be fair Elden Ring can be both overly forgiving and cruel. Cruel with the placement of that one Rune Bear and Falling Star Beast. (Because big bosses in a small arena that take up 1/3 of the arena alone and have massive aoe attacks was totally not maliciously intended) Then forgiving with the fact 90% of AI barely take advantage of when they Guard Break the player.

I just with Elden Ring was more of a derparture, there's still so much about this game, that is that way because of demon's souls, all these years later. Elden Ring has new elements, like the wonderous physik and the horse, that are absoultely new improvements to the format, worth having. There's just a reason people call it Dark Souls 4. It's still so dug into the series's antiquated systems. Why does the multiplayer still have to be based around beating a boss, and why does the design despite being open, still hinge so much on the idea that only a boss is interesting? The predictability of the boss at the end of every area, the forced difficulty of the damage and health bosses have, the "open world" that's just a series of dark souls worlds plopped into one map with somewhat more optional content, it all feels like a *half* step. And the fact that years ago an unrelated compay made a souls-like that imrpoves the formula so well, which will likely never get another sequel, and it's ideas died with it, when there's already systems and elements *in* elden ring that feel like they could have used it? It's not just melina. There's rogier, there's that barbarian woman, adopted daughter of the roundtable hold's host, even alexander the jar or D. So many people that *could have easily* been companion characters you could travel alongside, even without the healing mechanics present in Code Vein, that would have helped the immersion, and since this game is so *big* and the bosses hit so *hard* it hardly would have been seen as hurting the game's difficulty. If anything, it would have encuredged more people to not summon.

Melina's overall role was very badly designed. She's so dramatically absent throughout 95% of the game, we don't have any opportunity to grow any sort of connection or bond with her. Every. Single. Previous. Maiden. Was a constant presence. Maiden in Black, Emerald Herald, the Firekeeper, the Doll. Honestly, I think it was a little TOO much. People start to get burnt out on their presence after going back to level up so countless many times, and getting the same exact dialogue. You start to lose interest for the opposite reason. "Bear, Seek, Seek, Lest" and all that. They cease to be an NPC that you can form a bond with, and instead just become the level-up tool. Melina was the PERFECT opportunity to strike the perfect balance. Have her be a consistent presence, but not overwhelmingly so. Rather than need to talk to her every time you level up, and thus causing the "Bear, Seek, Seek, Lest" problem, just have her be... around, at the bonfire. Present, with us. Materialize when we sit down, disappear when we stand up. Have her "Talk" button always there, so we can interact when we want to, with unique dialogue at different places. Have her give unprompted dialogue when we first sit at particularly important Sites of Grace. That way, Melina feels like an actual part of our journey, someone we feel close to, without her becoming an impersonal plot device with a face. Then, when she separates from us when we first arrive in Leyendell, something about our adventure will truly feel like it's missing. She's not there anymore. We're alone. Not only that, players would feel relieved when she came back after Morgott, because something really was missing. The world really felt lonelier. The way the game is now, her leaving barely even registers. She just pops in, says "Thanks, I'm leaving. Bye." and nothing actually changes. So her coming back also means nothing. It's just such wasted opportunity. If she was done better, it would make players care about her significantly more, which would become very important later on.

I’m really disappointed in how little Melina was integrated into the game. They could have at least had her show up whenever you want to level up, or just sit there when you rest at a site of grace. She’s one of the few people who stick with you throughout most of your journey, and is completely loyal. They couldn’t even give us a companion to give us some sense of comfort in a world where everything wants to fucking kill us. The story definitely tells us that we’re supposed to be sad after specific events, but I barely felt anything.

I felt like a had a closer connexion with Millicent's journey than Melina's. I hope for a next game, From tries their had at making one where story NPCs are more involved in gameplay. Melina just being a voice in your head giving exposition on some areas, or random commentary on some landmarks or enemy types when you pass them by, would have been cool.

Half of Gideons dialogue about the lords could be given from Melina everytime we enter a new lords lands, "Caelid, it is said that General Radahn still wanders hes final battlefield, he was known as the mightiest of the demigods... He will prove challenging" or something "That on the horizon... Raya Lucaria Renalla is rules over the academy and land as Queen" Just bits that you could get with a "talk" option would be nice, I find it a bit anoying that the few times she showed up to share "wisdom" I was missing like 1k runes lvl up and leaving to crack a rune and then tried to lvl up she no longer showed up... Thats why I chose Ranni, at least shes there even when shes sleeping

I honestly wished she showed up more cause with her giving us the ability to lvl up I figured she'd at least appear each time we level. Plus if she appeared at each site of grace with some kind of interaction such as giving tips about nearby enemies/lore it would've made her death matter more for me. As it is in game I didn't really care about her when she died making her death fall flat.
