AP and fellow preppers. I have a word of caution for you. All lead-acid batteries give off hydrogen when being charged. They should be installed where they will safely off-gas to the exterior of your homes. I would suggest a sealed cabinet with top and bottom venting where you are going to stack multiple batteries. Also, leave an inch or so of room above the terminals to help dissipate heat during discharge. This is coming from an experienced journeyman electrician who has worked around large battery systems. God Bless!

Hello John, obviously I don't know much about batteries but do you know if the battery is a sealed battery does it still gas off? If you answer this question can you please do a new comment so that it can alert me; if you just reply to this the system will not alert me that you replied. Thank you..

Goal zero uses AGM acid batteries which don't give off as much gas as flooded and gel systems because the amount of liquid inside is very very little. So their more safer to used then full flooded cell systems that people commonly do by taking a car battery (which are flooded acid systems.) and put them in a battery box. Not to mention Goal zero uses fans to keep the batteries cool under load, which also vents out any air inside the unit to prevent any build up of gas that might cause any probs.
@thomasmaughan4798
@thomasmaughan4798 4 жыл бұрын
@@KillerRaptorr Sealed AGM batteries give off nothing and neither do lithium batteries. The hydrogen generated by AGM or other lead acid batteries is recombined by a catalyst and turned back into water. Lithium batteries generate carbon dioxide which if you charge them too fast, or charge a really dead battery (below 3 volts per cell), it will swell up and possibly explode and/or catch on fire. It is still a good idea to keep AGM batteries in a vented place in case of failure; a thing that can happen if your charge rate exceeds what AGM is designed for. Lithium can take a much higher charge rate than AGM batteries.

I've been waiting for this video topic. The yeti 1000, 1400 & 3000 have an inverter that can supply a constant 1500 watts AC. This is better than most solar generators out there, it can easily handle my furnace blower motor. The yetis also have AP connectors on the In/Output so it doesn't get disconnected when driving on offroad trails/roads. The yetis don't have great input watt charging but multiple AC chargers can be used, and the optional MPPT module help for solar charging (comes with ans internal PWS charge controller). GZ is updating these larger yetis soon, the GZ rep told me sometime this summer is the target timeframe.

Hello AP, in reply to your question. There is no such thing as a sealed lead-acid battery. They still have a built-in vent. It is just valved so that the pressure has to build up before it opens. Then re-closes afterward. So you can use it indoors as long as it is vented to the exterior. Here is the rub though. You never want this battery to freeze. Also since it is still a wet cell battery. It is possible to have a leak. Being inside of that housing will probably safe guard you that way. So my suggestion would be to rack them if you wish to go verticle. I would consider either a mechanical space such as where your heating system is or possibly in a laundry room then cut in some ventilation using ABS or PVC pipe. I still suggest an upper and a lower vent. The lower one could be routed to a subfloor area to help keep them from getting too cold the upper vent could go out of a wall preferably adjacent. Once you exit the wall turn 90 degrees verticle and put some kind vent cap on to keep the moisture out.

I hate to say, because I love your channel, but 1000 watt/hours will only last an hour with a 1000 watt heater. It would be great for LED lights but not heaters. Solar and batteries are not good with electric heating systems. They just consume too much power. Burn wood for heat and use solar/batteries for lights and short term motor/pumps.

Depends on what you use it for, I would never use this for electric heat, my main use for this is powering my Toyo Stove during the winter which only draws 360 Watts during start up and for my refrigerator during the summer which only draws up to 300 watts while the compressor is on. I actually had to use it this last winter for about 5 hours to power my stove and it did great and had plenty of power left after the electricity came back on.

*New Subscriber* Goal Zero makes great equipment for people like me who want (Need) Plug-n-Play equipment. I have the same set but with two expansion batteries. I purchased a couple of 1000Li about 2-3 years ago. I purchased the Expansion Batteries September of last year. Hooked everything up when they arrived to for a test run and the batteries were at 100%. I stored the batteries in a closet. I've used the 1000Li on multiple occasion, but never needed to run it for more than 6-7 hours, so the Ex Batts stayed in the closet. I pulled them out today and hooked everything up to charge the batts, they were at 75%. I thought that was pretty good considering sitting in the box for 13 months. I was reading through the Goal Zero Q&A regarding the 1000 Li which is no longer in production btw. According to GZ:

The Yeti Link can also be used as a high amperage car charger for mobile applications. It can be switched to car mode through a reset button on top (pressing 4 times). In this mode, it will charge when it senses 13V or higher (meaning the vehicle is running) but won't pull voltage from your vehicle battery below 13V (to prevent a dead battery). Very slick. Also....keep in mind, any 12V lead acid battery can be used with the Link in Tank Mode. Doesn't have to be Goal Zero's overpriced batteries.

I own a 1400 unit, no it doesnt come with a "link" module. However, i opter to get the optional MPPT module and 24Amp fast charger module. I also have a 200watts solar panel but stop using the panel coz it takes entire day to fill 1400watts from 80% drained. The 25Amp fast charger plugged on wall power takes couple hours to full capacity, thats fine coz i have a gridtied to augment my household consumption. The idea of having extra power banks is just excellent. I havent really checked if the "Link" module can take in 25Amp from a fast charger, coz if it does then expznsion banks will be a very good option for me. Thanks

I don't understand why you would use these units if you have wall power. I thought the point was being able to charge them from solar.? Now if your power is sporadic, ok, or in an RV, fine, just curious what the purpose of this is. Being out in the country I still don't experiance hardly any power interruptions. If we do have one it is a major storm and you're out for days or a week. Thats what the generator is for.. These units are good for a day at most. I'm really curious.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a key purpose of the Yeti Link. With a couple of additional cables, you can connect to a vehicle & use the alternator to mega-charge your Yeti. If you have a van or something with a house battery in addition to a starter battery, you can connect to the house battery & leave the Link in "tank" mode. From their web site; "...When placed in “Car Mode,” Yeti Link can also be used to recharge a Yeti Lithium from your vehicle. Link is only compatible with a Yeti 1000, 1400, or 3000 Lithium." And you can still use solar panels to charge at same time.

Interesting synchronicity - I had just added to my wish list yesterday, "solar generator." The fact that this can be built one module at a time appeals, as I'm retired and on a fixed income. I'd have to save for each additional battery module, but I'm a saver anyway so that's nothing new. Given I live in hurricane territory, this could be what I've been hoping for. Question: is there a way to add input from a wind turbine? My dream is to have hybrid solar+wind to power my home.

Although I have a lot to learn about solar generators, I think I really like this, for a few reasons. Yes, I’m an apartment dweller. But, I’m also getting older and I think I read where this is 40 lbs. While I took a look at the Goal Zero 1250, because it has a rolling carrier, I think it might be one of those that weighs about 100 lbs. There’s no way I’m taking the chance of lifting a 100 lb. unit into my upstairs apartment, wheels or not. And, because I’m trying to maintain OpSec, I’m not trying to make it anyone else’s business. The other is that this sounds as if, at 1000 watt hours, it will be able to power my 750 watt fridge for a period of time. Yet another thing is that I like the piecemeal expandability of it. That I can build it’s features over the course of time and also stack them, so the footprint remains small and, again, the nosey neighbors don’t have to wonder why I’m dragging some heavy piece of equipment into my apartment. Yet another is that, if I can add car batteries to the expansion module, that means, at least at this point in time, that I don’t have to wait for delivery of a car battery. I can simply run to the local automotive store or even Walmart and buy batteries. The other units that are lithium and under 40 lbs? They cannot power my fridge, you cannot link or expand them and I believe they simply are what they are. That, at least for me, their best usage is that I can place them in other rooms, should I choose to buy any, so I wouldn’t have power cables and components running from room to room. But, none of them, including the Jackery, for instance, at this same price point, would be the major solar generator for me.

This Video has brought up the important topic of energy self reliance. The solar generator/power station industry is offering good products at good prices now and with the built in BMS & inverters, a solar system is an easily as connecting solar panels for a renewable power source. The lead acid battery options are quickly becoming obsolete when the lithium battery life span and available power is compared to the lead acid option. There is definitely a larger cost up front with lithium, and that is a real barrier. I made the switch to lithium 3 years ago and am very happy I did. Hobotech & Will Prowse are great youtube channel for learning about solar options. There is a very strong emphasis on real testing of products and a lot of more affordable options come out looking good. Check out Jackey & Maxoak solar generators as proven options.

Which 8mm input should I use in that case? The one on the left that is built into the Yeti or the new port that comes with the Link Module that you installed on the right of the Yeti?

However I’m wondering if I’d be better off skipping the extension packs altogether and just getting a 3000x and 1500x and when one is depleted put it on The solar bank to recharge and hook the other one up to the integration kit. I’m looking at this as an emergency/disaster long term off the grid situation to compliment assist my home solar set up that’s about 7kwh with battery backup as well. What are your thoughts

did you ever hook up a SOLAR Panel to it to charge?? and if so which one did you use?
@cldecarlo
@cldecarlo 4 жыл бұрын
How far can you let the lead acid batteries deplete before recharging? Have you recharged your expansion batteries yet? I want to use them in a neighborhood where I can not keep solar panels out all the time; just during a disaster/ or extended power outage,. So I might use up a lot of the stored power. How to recharge the lead acid expansion batteries is my other question question. I have 4. The expansion batteries only recharge through the Yeti Link. I don't want to use the car charger.

It absolutely last overnight, depending on what your charging. Heaters and big pulls are too much but lights, computers etc all at the same time will last you several days, I dont know about for a whole home but for use in a Van off grid it will keep things charged for a while without solar. It is essentially a "generator" except it charges from electricity and not gas, and its silent unlike non solar "generators"

I don't see these as a viable home backup solution if you live in a reasonably built up area., A generator is far better as the average American home needs a lot more capacity. Now a remote cabin, people who live in the islands where there is no power or it's seasonal, or for preppers who are concerned about the remote possibility of an EMP, OK fine, as long as you have solar panels. They will give you long term, renewable limited power for lights, communication, small low draw appliances ect. Perhaps they can run a small 110 volt pump if you have a shallow well. Those are all considerations. The average American home is drawing 8-10,000 watts of power when people are home, 3-4000 during the day when everyone is at work (But the home is also using heating fuel so another energy source) A full size fridge will drain these in a couple days. Now maybe with a bunch of solar panels you can offset some of that, or have a smaller, super efficient fridge and be ok. You won't be running a washer/dryer, well pump, any of that. You will have to design your living setup around basically one 20 amp circuit, which can be done, it's just not what most people are used to.

@KillerRaptorr
@KillerRaptorr 4 жыл бұрын
Surge protectors aren't required on solar generators. These kind of solar generators do not have a ground port, The 3rd plug is just a hole/open space. Since these units aren't gonna be hit by lightning or are under voltage flux as home outlets go. They don't require it because there is never gonna be a surge or spike. The only point of a ground is to fire back any surge or flex that happens via the two prongs. As far as surge from home to the unit and to device. The unit's AC brick has ground. So it's unlikely to surge to the unit because the AC brick converts from AC to pure DC. So the surge will only happen inside the power brick and not to the unit.
