Reno's racing warbirds are probably the only motorsport-event on this planet to be just as hot and cool at the same time as the Tourist Trophy Races on the Isle of Man ! Well, maybe a little less deadly - on a regular basis.

It was live streamed this year, which hasn't happened in a while, and NBC Sports does an annual multi part special (which you can find on the Reno Air Racing Association's KZbin channel). I'm hoping live TV coverage will follow at some point for the visibility it brings, but the streaming this year was really good with pertinent commentary and multiple cameras on each race with the feed shown on jumbotrons on site.

Unlimited Air Racing...ain't what it used to be...Winning Speed 417mph, only 3 planes broke 400mph. Unlimited Air "Racing" is not much more than parade laps around a closed course anymore. The "Glory Days" of the Unlimited's are now history, sad but true.

Dreadnought apparently is capable of over 500 mph as is September Fury but due to its size and weight and the shape of the course it suffers.If this race was held at Cleveland like the old days then the SeaFury would eat and spit the Mustangs and Bearcats etc

@@TheClareybrown61170 then it would have the records for fastest piston powered aircraft not voodoo or rarebear depending which record since voodoo had engine issues on laps 3 and 4 which dropped its speed but first lap was 504 i believe with new wing.

They have all been retired and are in museums since they are highly modified mustangs or in rare bears case a bear cat. But they flew 480 mph laps was voodoo, stega red, rare bear, precocious metal. But lots crashed and those highly modified engines cost big bucks. Now the fast planes are the l39 jets which werent any faster then planes like voodoo etc. Its to bad that their isnt the money to get these planes to races.

They need to spread the footage around a bit, this looked like there were only three aircraft in the race, where was the second Mustang? At least the Yak was slow enough to be seen when it was passed.

Checked twice that this was the Unlimited Gold, couldnt believe it. I miss a whole field of faster planes. Strega, Vodoo, The Bear, September Fury, Precious Metall, Critical Mass, Riff Raff, Dago Red to name some. Why is that? Unlimited Air Racing dead after what happened to the Ghost?

Second hand info I've gotten at the event the last several years has been that many of the Unlimiteds of prior years have financial woes of one kind or another, other than PM which is being rebuilt after a fire and Tsunami which is being slowly rebuilt from scratch by the pilot's grandson. Voodoo is now retired and hoping for a Smithsonian placement (last I heard). It's frustrating that Bear and 232 are actually at Stead every year, just not racing. On the plus side, the Sanders family is well on their way to populating the unlimited class with their (now 4) Seafuries.

Actually it was a treat to see someone else take the money. I've always appreciated voodoo, strega and rare bear...but no one ever had a chance with them, so this is a great change to see new folks take the gold

The FAA wont allow it because it's a safety concern. I've been going to the Air Races for 18 years I wish I could just stand under one of those pylons.

Slower speeds? I know the course was changed for safety, but the speeds seem much slower. Planes like Voodoo, Dego Red, Rare Bear, Strega, Tsunami,... seem to have vanished. (Crashed?) The speed record was over 500mph in 2003. Major rule changes? Are the Unlimited planes now limited? Link to rule changes? I am curious. The racing is still great. With the Sport class gaining speed maybe Bob Ponds dream of preserving war birds and racing production planes will come true.

the fastest few planes recently retired for now-the drama that is Rare Bear continues...Precious Metal is still being rebuilt after the ramp fire ... Tsunami is long gone-1991 lost on it's way home... the cost of these birds is obscene so if no one is pushing competition the speeds drop to whatever the lowest speed Dreadnought needs to comfortably beat the next fastest plane... here's a link that shows some of the challenges facing air racing at the top pmraceteam.com/team-precious-metal

@@hangglidernerd good read about Precious Metal. The Palm Spring Air Museum has a Spitfire with a Griffon engine. They display says the torque is so high, it almost rolled on takeoff. Bob Ponds collection of flying capable War Birds is at the museum. Great collection.

Czech mate is a l39 jet the rest i know are all retired except for sept, fury dont know that name. Voodoo retired and went to museum after setting piston aircraft record. Rare bear retired to weeks museum the year before or same year voodoo did. Stega retired the year voodoo did or year after sinceit was last of true racers. Precious metal had emergency landing and i dont think ever came back. Cost is 2 high

Some of you folks crack me up. “Frankenstein built P-51s”? What the hell does that mean? Do you have ANY idea exactly what has and has not been done to make Voodoo, Strega, Dago, ect so fast? You would obviously be surprised to know that 99% of what is done to make them that fast are bolt-on mods which could be undone in a matter of months. This idea of “chopping up” a Mustang for racing is incredibly overblown. And as for the Ghost, do your research on that situation. There is NO comparison to Voodoo, Strega, Dago Red (the fastest, BTW). Do your homework before you go popping off!!!

Okay, I was being harsh on wheelchair racing. I've seen Red Baron racing, and the likes of Dago Red, Strega, Rare Bear, etc. racing Unlimited Gold. This simply does not compare to the racing of the recent past.
