That plastic case for electrical.. remember to put some UV coating on it or it will be brittle in a matter of few months. Might have been better to use old ammo box that you can get from army/navy supplies or maybe a freight type store that has new.

Seagull motors are immortal - I was given one that had spend 25 years in an old leaky shed and it started first time - it even started after I dropped it over the side (after a few too many beers). It spend the night in 10 feet of water until I dived down and retrieved it in the morning - emptied the seawater out, put some fuel in it and it started first time. It's a cruel world.

One thing to bare in mind with those seagulls, those props are designed for slow revs compared to most outboards, if you spin them up too fast, they will just cavitate. Displacement speed is best. Mate fitted a 3hp diesel to a Seagull leg, mega fuel efficient but noisy as feck.

And way cheap if the sails are ripped and neglected. Cheaper to convert than restoring it as a sailing boat (by a large measure). And better than the planing hull, fuel thirsty redneck boats. More room to camp in the converted sailing boats. The McGregor 26 is a convertible sailing boat. About the only one (and it has heaps of camping space inside). Decked out. 😅

You should change that to a trigger because if you accidentally fall out of the boat no one's going to be there to turn down the dial and the boat will keep on going without you. At least if it's a trigger it'll stop once your fingers off the trigger

I think there's a bluetooth based solution that will do this fairly easily. You keep it on yourself and if the controller doesn't receive a ping, then it shuts the motor off. No wires or triggers needed. However, I don't think this would work if you croak, unless it's integrated with a fitness watch and stops receiving a pulse!

So good seeing something cool done with the old seagull! I had plan’s of hotting mine up and potentially adding a brushless motor for a hybrid but It was reduced to a blob in a bushfire,the only thing I’ve got left is the prop which wasn’t on the motor at the time.

Solar enthusiast here! Yes you can charge the battery while powering the motor in order to do so you’d need to be generating more power than you’re using. That’ll depend on the KW on motor and what “throttle” your running it at that time. Also what wattage the panels are. You could definitely design and build a full fledged system for a cheap price. I’d be happy to help if you have any questions about that.
@MedicDillahunty
@MedicDillahunty 4 ай бұрын
That beeping from the ESC when you increase the throttle from the servo tester sounds like it's going into a programming mode. There's a series of beeps that correspond to different ESC settings. Usually you just drop the throttle back to nil and it should exit the programming mode and start to drive the motor with the next signal. Also, you should get a smart shunt for the battery to monitor power consumption, voltage sag isn't linear with lithium like it is with lead acid... once the voltage starts to sag its usually close to being fully discharged.
@DktheWelder

Formula for a displacement hull is the square root of your hull length (in feet) x 1.3. Assuming your boat is about 16 feet that makes your maximum speed 5knots. Semi displacement (which it looks like yours is) is slightly higher so multiply by 1.6.

I wonder if you could use a rag joint coupler commonly used between the steering wheel shaft and the steering box on an auto . I think it’s called a rag joint coupler because it a round hard rubber disk reinforced with cord . There are 4 holes in the disk , 2 bolts for the flange on the box and the same for the steering shaft . Hope this helps .

you need to cap the shaft with a bearing that can take the vertical loading (i forget what they're called exactly, that are slightly conical and can take a load on the shaft axis) and this way there is no pressure on the coupling apart form the rotation.

I really need to get on with my electric boat motor. got the panels, hull, battery and donor outboard, but procrastinating on the motor choice. very similar use case, a little moulded plastic catamaran that I want running off solar so I can just trawl all afternoon without running petrol. The ski boat uses more fuel trawling than cruising at 30 knots, and the dinghy isnt very relaxing with the janky old outboard coughing away. target species is only Australian herring, the little cousin of kahawai. whilst they will happily take bait, I find trawling catches bigger and meatier specimens, the fittest of the pack. and cruising along the beach on a summer afternoon does offer some lovely scenery ;-)
@DktheWelder
@DktheWelder 8 ай бұрын
The motor choice is a bit of a hard one , the motor I used wasn’t very well suited and in runner would be better and a water cooled esc it can get expensive pretty quickly! If you want to go fast look at the qs138 motor would get you moving!
@frankdesbaux
@frankdesbaux Жыл бұрын
That looks like a 'barge pusher' prop., or at least a later replica. You'll only ever go so fast with that but it should be the most energy efficient with that hull. I threw out the diesel in my keeler and put on a new transom hung Yamaha 15. When I changed the prop over to a 'barge pusher', I halved the revs and fuel consumption with no sacrifice of speed. 13 to 15 kph should be the limit or thereabouts for that hull, but that's fast enough.
@DktheWelder
@DktheWelder Жыл бұрын
Yes someone told me it was a barge prop I have other props but thought this would work best. Why go for an outboard over using the diesel engine in your boat?
@frankdesbaux
@frankdesbaux Жыл бұрын
Because it was unreliable, noisy, heavy smelly, old Bukh and took up a lot of space. It also had a fixed blade prop that slowed the boat down. The new Yamaha 15 was quiet, reliable and outside. Combined with the prop it was extremely economical and a lot cheaper than replacing the diesel. It changed the boat dramatically for the better. Great work mate. Keep it up.@@DktheWelder

If you're still looking for a new multimeter, _don't_ get one of those cheap-ish HT208 clamp meters. While it looks kinda cool and has a bunch of useful features, it is very power hungry and will go through a set of batteries in a month just on standby/occasional use. But more than that, it uses two tiny LEDs for backlight and they will burn out very quickly, rendering the meter unusable. It is also extremely slow, taking several seconds to give a reading. My personal choice at this point is a Klein CL1000. It's an older model, but had pretty much the same features with better build quality.

More grunt than the old seagul. You sound like a kiwi, but are you sure you're not a Queenslander? We alway weld in bare feet too. Won't learn. This was a fun watch. 👍

Make a pair of sweeps using sailboard masts. You can stand and use your body to row in a forward direction. Works great for when the batteries are dead.

Great job on that motor build man ! I have been working on a 3d printed outboard myself ! Recently I tested it on my kayak with great results. I have a video uploaded if you want to check it out.

All you need now is a solar water distilation system, maybe a fishing net and your set!🤔

You can buy little floating solar stills . And a fishing net would be good

It beeps because you have either got too high a starting torque (use a centrifugal clutch) or it has lost a phase.

Oops. Didn’t expect you to put a battery to big on it. 12s limit. I know it says 50v but a nominal 50v battery fully charged is higher.
@DktheWelder

Meant to be 48v but being a novice I didn’t realise it would overcharge like that ! I feel like I have a better understanding of it all now

@@DktheWelder No problem. It’s a very very common mistake. For an example. An 11.1v battery is actually 12.6 when charged and 9-9.9 when flat. It catches everybody out. Can I suggest you get your battery builder to remove one set of cells from series and if possible add them to parallel? The battery will last noticeably longer per charge. Or, with the motor spinning the prop too fast, you might think about swapping the top 1/3 series cells to parallel cells and gain about double the drive time.

@@brucebaxter6923 it’s I have thought about doing that. Would I be able to do it myself? Do I want 36v instead? Then get a different charger

Why not just used the gas motor . That a bit of wieght. Extra stuff. Gas is way more energy dense.

Can you match the amp draw with that number of solar panels? So you can run purely off sunshine?
@DktheWelder
@DktheWelder Жыл бұрын
@@HandymanMark no , the solar panels were making about 200w and I’m guess I was drawing 5000w going top speed. On a calm day I guess you could move really slowly and only use 200w. But sitting in one place for awhile charges pretty quickly
@HandymanMark

I understand. You probably need double the solar panel wattage. About 10,000 watts of solar panels
