Great video! I needed a refresher, and I'm planning to use this for hydroponics soon. Regarding the 4:1 waste ratio: I had a boss who worked in the water filtration industry at an engineering level. He explained to me in detail how to build RO systems using inexpensive components and pointed out that these systems are often sold with a high markup. Pro tip: You can take the waste water and either cycle it back into the main input or, if I remember correctly, directly into the RO membrane itself. By installing an adjustable valve on the waste/recycle tube, you can control how much water is discarded as waste and how much is cycled back. Think of it like a T-valve in a recycling loop-though you’ll still need some waste output, as it can’t be reduced to zero. The tradeoff here is between water quality and the lifespan of the RO membrane. In areas where water is expensive (like California), or if you're off-grid and cycling rainwater, this setup can help conserve water. However, if you're filtering pond water or dealing with poor water quality, recycling may not be practical. From what I remember, city tap water is generally fine to recycle, but dirtier sources are less ideal for this method. Alternatively, you can skip recycling and simply use the adjustable valve to control the waste flow, which increases water output. Again, the tradeoff is between water quality and the increased wear on the RO membrane.

The issue WITH ANY filter is that filters need to stay saturated. My whole farm and adjacent lands runs on rain collected. Until I raised the outlet on my filter barrels(previously was next to the lowest point), the water was so-so. Also, by keeping membrane in constant fluid, it will last longer than wet/dry frequencies. Leave the water on a trickle all night and get a glass carboy(5gal) and I guarantee that water will have way less ppm

You cut those white 1/4" water lines properly. Cutting them correctly is essential for keeping the o-ring intact. It's possible that others have cut that line with scissors or something, causing deformation and burrs that damage the o-rings which will then cause leaks. I also purchased a cheap model from Amazon. It’s a 6 stage, plus I got an extra DI canister. I made sure to get a model with screw on caps, so I could replace the media with media of my choosing. It’s a MaxWater unit. There are really cheap models that you can’t take apart and change the media, so you have to buy that company’s whole replacement cartridges… which are almost as much as a whole new unit from them. One of those cheaper now, but more expensive later type deals. The reason I got this unit, is if you do some research into the RO membrane… almost everyone uses the same thing, with different labels. Just like the unit itself… basically identical to the one a very popular reef supply store features on their KZbin channel, without their label on it. The reason I got the extra DI canister, is because when the two mixed bed DI resins are exhausted… I can use one for anion resin and one for cation resin, both color changing. The two resins don’t exhaust at the same rate, so if you use mixed bed… you’re probably changing one too early and wasting it. I have slightly elevated silicates in my tap water (which don’t show up on a TDS meter), so the extra resin helps me out there! The really important things are make sure your water pressure is between the units min/max pressures. If it’s too low, you’ll need a booster pump. This is true of any unit. Also, they’re not miracle workers… if your water is very nasty, don’t expect 0 TDS. You may need additional canisters/filters. My water is about 150 TDS out of the faucet, and 0 TDS out of the unit. My waste to clean ratio isn’t bad. A little worse than 50/50.

EXTREMELY informative and helpful video!! I’ve a 75g freshwater tank, and super hard water, which is affecting my live plants and possibly creating scrape off algae. A few questions: My utility closet is about 20’ from my tank, and I hook a long syphon hose to clean the substrate and add fresh water. Could I hook up the hose (with adapters) directly to the clean output from filter, or do u have to use 5 gallon buckets? Also, I’m assuming I should upgrade to a 150gpd system (or higher), so it doesn’t take a day to fill during water changes? Lastly, does an RO system cause you to do less water changes compared to before you installed? Thanks in advance!
@ssaquascapes
@ssaquascapes 4 ай бұрын
The output line is a very thin hose as seen in this video. I don’t know of an adapter that would work. Either way, the output volume would be the same if you have a larger hose. What I would recommend is buying a long length of the same output line, that skinny white hose, and just run it to your tank to drip in. I use 5 gallon buckets to refill my aquariums, it takes me one hour and 10 minutes to fill a 5 gallon bucket. If you do the math, this may give you an idea how long it’ll take to fill up an entire aquarium with RO. Another option is to get a large water basin, like a 55 gallon drum, and just run RO into that and then run a pump from that barrel to your tank. I’m sure you’ve seen this on MD Fishtanks. Finally, I don’t think RO water extends the length of time between maintenance sessions, it’s really gonna depend on your nutrient and lighting schedule for your tanks. However, algae that feeds on the minerals found in tap water would not grow in RO. You just have to play around and find out what’s right for your tank, and this is half the fun for me, experimenting.

I have not had to replace the filter yet. The DI filter is about 1/2 used (color change). You can get the filters on Amazon, and there is a brochure in the kit with part numbers. However, if you were to replace say, 3 filters of the 4, I’d just buy a whole new unit as you’d pay less than replacing all filters. Most people won’t replace the RO or other filters often though. For detailing you wouldn’t be as worried about chemicals in water as we aquarists are.

how long does it last until needing to be replaced? do they sell replaceable filters or you have to buy a whole new one for replacement
@ssaquascapes
@ssaquascapes Жыл бұрын
The system bases its lifespan on gallons/liters filtered. I am not monitoring that, but the deionization filter will turn colors when it is used up. It is a clear filter housing and you can see it color changing from the bottom up. The RO membrane itself has the longest lifespan and should last twice as long as the other filters. I just test each batch of RO and I am still getting 1-5 TDS readings. So I know the filter is still good. When you get larger TDS numbers, you know it’s time to change filters. They sell replacement filters (individual or in a kit) as shown in the instructions. I assume you can find them on Amazon as well. If not, you can order from the company’s webpage.

Correct; I use this for fish aquariums. You do not want to drink deionized water for human consumption. It will dilute the minerals in your body from my understanding. They sell a three filter version that does not have the deionizing unit, this would be an RO unit, from my understanding, suitable for human consumption water. However, always double check and do extensive research as I am only relaying information from the company’s instruction sheet.

You will have to re-mineralize if it is required for the axolotl. I have not kept this species so other than the above advice, I could not offer any assistance on axolotl care. Cheers to getting the little guy out of the tub, sounds like he will be in good care. 🤘

Do you let water flow into Ro all the time or do you only use it when in need and if yes then how do you store ro filter?
@ssaquascapes
@ssaquascapes Жыл бұрын
I have since bought a hose splitter for my laundry room and mounted the RO unit on the wall in there. So, it is always attached to a shut off valve (the splitter) and all I have to do is open that valve and it makes RO water. When I need RO, I use 5 gallon buckets and containers which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to fill 5G (at my water pressure). Hope that helps and thanks for watching! 🤘

Hmm. 5 gallons ro from walmart is about 7.50 here. I wonder if it's worth the effort, I guess it depends on personal preference

You may drink RO water but, do not use the Deionization filter. It is not good to drink DI water consistently.

Have you had any trouble since setting it up?
@ssaquascapes
@ssaquascapes Жыл бұрын
None. I actually store it inside the house and go outside to hook it up to my garden faucet. So, it gets more abuse than if you installed it permanently in one spot. I use it almost every weekend to make RO and it has never leaked or failed to produce 0-1 TDS RO. It is slower than the big systems, but if you have the time and keep the water pressure low (half of the faucet max open) you should be happy with the inexpensive system. If you want one, I think I have an affiliate link in description. Thanks for watching! 🤘

Is the plastic water can safe to use?
@ssaquascapes
@ssaquascapes Жыл бұрын
Yes. That container is designed to transport aquarium water. Either saltwater or fresh. Has a nice sealing cap and it is free from all leeching type chemicals. You can find these HDPE containers at most local fish shops or order on Amazon. I have provided a link below for Amazon. amzn.to/481m7wg Hope that helps!

Have you seen how much waste water is produced to make ro water cause I've been wanting one myself but don't want to be just wasting the run off waste water cause freshwater is valuable to everyone?
@ssaquascapes
@ssaquascapes Жыл бұрын
Yes. The waste water is roughly 4:1. A LOT of waste water. I run mine outside and have the unit sitting next to the garden/flower bed (uphill) so I justify my massive waste water that way. I suppose you could get some barrels to collect the waste water and use in other tanks that you’re using tap water in. Or save that water for drought watering, or even drinking. Point is, I agree. It is a waste. But no way around it that I know of unless you have a very expensive system.

Setting the waste water to flower or plant isn't a good idea as there's more of salt content in the waste water so the plants might dry up

You can usually find a water report on their website or call/visit and ask for a water report. Or simply ask over the phone if they use chloramine.

An RO system need 50 micron filter and minimum 850psi (55bar). This system is not near what it claims. If you do a TDS test ( total dissolved solids) the water will fail miserably

Is not reverse osmosis. Ro is to remove salt from sea water and you need minimum 50 atmosphere pump to to take sea water thru the membrane. Yours is just a fresh water filter. Stop advertising as a ro. Is definitely not!
@ssaquascapes
@ssaquascapes 6 ай бұрын
You might wanna do more research. While RO was first developed as a way to remove salt from seawater, it was highly inefficient. An RO membrane is an RO membrane. You are referring to what is now commonly referred to as desalination. 🤙

@@ssaquascapesI agree, LucianStrole is incorrect. We use this same RO process at the factory I am employed. We make RO water buy running city water through crabon filters then softeners and finally RO membranes. Out pump that pumps the water through the RO membranes runs at 150psi. Once we have made the RO water we then use that water to run it through DI cathode and anode bottles to manufacture DI water at a quality of 19 micro siemens. Once all of this is completed we use this water for our manufacturing processes.

Thank you for confirming and this is amazing to have your knowledge on this subject. I would be inclined, to actually pay for one of these units and send it to you to get an expert review. It seems that this little unit has the same stages as your large RO facility. After all this time I STILL have not changed the original filters and still get 12TDS from this unit. Lemme know if you want to collaborate on a review!🤘🤘
