I'm so glad to hear another musician say this! I teach piano and have to reiterate this many students. I understand that they just wanna play their songs fast from the get-go, but I'm going to dramatically slow them down with all the messiness and hesitation.😭 Great video!

I've done cello for 10 years, and this is something that I've done a lot with cello, but I've never thought to do it on drums, somehow. Thanks for the reminder!

truly excellent advice! i remember that first time of feeling independence as a magical breakthrough moment! i have to admit that i am still more of an "inter-dependent" drummer though!

Interesting… I’m 62, professional for 40 years. I’m learning new things on KZbin and came across this channel and was curious as to why examples were presented so slowly. This explains the hypothesis… I’m going to give it a try as unnatural as it seems to me. BTW, excellent presentations with enthusiasm! 👏

This was a major stopping force in my attempts to learn the drums when I was younger. I couldn't get that independence or any significant ostinato going. Even something like a Swiss triplet, I don't "feel" like I'm doing triplets and duplets with my hands. I had to learn what a Swiss triplet sounded like, and I'm doing a rhythm instead of subdivisions. Plus I always felt like I was going to fall off the stool any time there was too much happening with my feet.

Thank you for reminding me of this As kids, we have all the time in the world and aren’t afraid of slowing it down ( how the hell did I learn drum corps rudiments as a teenager… simple, slowing it down) As adults we feel pressured for time and muck it all up But if we slow it down, soon youre flying

A weird phenomenon I have noticed when I started learning the paradiddle two years ago, I skipped the accents and got my tempo up to let us say "midspeed." But then when I tried to start accenting the first stroke on each side, I couldn't do it, and when I slowed down, I couldn't play the paradiddle at the speed I had started out. I'm now having to essentially relearn everything. And now at 69 having puttered for 32 years on my kit, there is hell to pay. There are no shortcuts!

Getting my left hand to participate wasn't easy. What helped was doing everyday tasks left-handed. Stirring the soup, brushing teeth, ect

That's great advice! Lot's of drummers struggle with this. I wrote a free eBook specifically on the topic of strenghtening your left hand called the Equaliser! You can download it for free here if you're interested 😊 www.alpynehq.com/product-page/the-equaliser-left-hand-matrix

Programmer here too, although i'm just junior hehehe. A piece of advise (although it is particularly similar to the video's advice), is slowdown, and zoom in... I have these similar problems with limb independence while I was trying to follow the drum parts of The Pineapple Thief's In Exile (Gavin Harrison's playing in it). When the hard part comes, I always try to listen first of what's happening (zooming in) in the music itself. I remember at the pre-bridge part, Gavin Harrison is somehow accented 3's in 8 (CMIIW) of closed/open hi hats (kinda like disco feel, but instead he opens the hihats on the beat, instead on the backbeat), while his left hand is "traveling around the toms", his left foot is opening & closing the hi hats, and his right foot is hitting bass at some odd placing notes.... I stopped, hear the parts over and over to understand what's going on, and then doing it on a VERY SLOW TEMPO. Like the videos said, play it slow until you cannot do it wrong. The trick here is always to find your favorite song, and then play along to follow the drum parts, because the drummer of the song will do some unique things that we can learn, including on limb independence...

Yeah . It was explained to me when you play notes, think of it like entering data points. If you enter them exactly on the exact right time line, it is easier to speed it up -all the data has been inputed in the correct time sequence. If you try to start too quickly, you wind up entering the data in the wrong time sequence and it remains wrong as you speed it up. Then you have two tasks: unlearning and relearning.
