Great video. Getting specific about what you mean when you use a term is really powerful. It shows intention and creates accountability. People tend to throw around words like discipline, motivation, inspiration etc... without ever getting specific.

I remember seeing an interview with Ed O’Neil years ago talking about how he became a black belt. He said there were many times I was tired or sore or just didn’t want to go to class and I said to myself just walk through the door and 14 years later I earned my black belt. I still think about that when I’m lacking motivation and tell myself just walk though the door. Most times I leave happy I forced myself to go. I’ve been training 11 1/2 years now and will train until my body won’t allow it anymore.

To help for motivation and therefore discipline, I am also using short term goals. When I started BJJ last April, couldn't finish the warm up...my first goal was to finish it, and I was going further each session, push me to keep moving and going 3 times a week. Now that I can finish class, I try to apply a particular techniques we learned previously during the roll, and even if it fails i keep trying to find how to make it work and it feels good when you hit it finally. Having some kind of success, even small ones, helps out to keep your discipline as you don't want to throw all hard efforts you did to achieve your goal by slacking off. Particular thanks to Chewy for all those motivation, mindset related videos. Helped me to convince myself to start BJJ when I was so unfit and overweight. Few month later, back to my skinny self, I can survive the class, lost bunch of weight and I am having lots of fun even when getting submitted. Hopefully I am also learning and improving :D

This video description is literally me. Been doing BJJ for almost two months, going 2-3 days week consistently and already noticing a huge difference from the first time I walked in the door

Chew this was much needed. In the last year I had let myself go and completely let go of BJJ and Muay Thai and just became a fat fuck. Literally losing all The progress I made in the year previous. (I had dropped from 237 to 196) and just put all That back on and it feels embarrassing. And I know that to make the journey back it's not motivation you need but true discipline. Thank you for sharing this.

It happens. That's where the practice element comes in. Just like you mess up a technique and then make adjustments. When you get undisciplined with your life and realize it. It's time to make adjustments. Best of luck to you.

I used the visionary principle to learn from my mistakes. I was injured attempting a triangle choke which ended up with me being bent in half. I learned that sometimes you have to know when to give up on a position. After recovery I feel more confident in my triangles and when to let go to open guard.

I once heard discipline defined as the ability to give yourself a command and then be able to carry out that command.

People are sharing, so I’ll share as well. I’ve never been crazy overweight or anything, but I’ve always had a bit of a belly and being in my mid-20’s I’d like to have a better body and at least not be as soft as a bag of milk anymore. So I started going to the gym, and a huge portion of my motivation has been just looking up cool things about weightlifting and writing down my workout weights and rep numbers etc. The majority of my motivation to stay disciplined and go to the gym regularly has been positive, and I think that the positive framing of it has helped me a lot. I’ve only been going for 5-6 months, so I’m still very early, but it seriously feels like a habit now, and I’ve enjoyed the process the whole way. The same can be applied with jiu jitsu; there’s no shortage of cool techniques and videos of great matches available for free on the internet to keep someone motivated. Just my two cents

Hey chewie, quick question. At 17 years old, I train with basically all grown men and I find myself getting frustrated because they feel so much stronger than me (man strength maybe, idk). I just started recently and I am curious as to what I should do about it. Thanks.

Hey man, I'm 19 and started training at 16, with only one other guy my age(17) and he also had like 20 pounds on me. I was 140 back then and most people in my gym were at least 160. I was very frustrated cuz everyone was outside of my weight and age. I had to let go of some expectations, it just wasn't reasonable for me to expect myself to have a great offense again these guys cuz every time I made a mistake I'd get in a horrible position or submitted. So I focused on my defense. I worked really hard on learning how to counter common techniques and how to set up traps for my opponent. The only reason I'm good off of my back is cuz I never got the opportunity to be good anywhere else😂, but now I am good enough that I am both mentally comfortable with being more aggressive and I've reached a point where the physical gaps are no longer so high(I'm 160 now). I still catch a lot of sneaky submissions and quick transitions but now I'm able to round out my game. TL DR: Focus on what you can do against them and work hard on defense and counter fighting cuz when your opponent has physical advantages over you, ever move you make, ever mistake you make carries more weight and risk to it then the moves they make. Good luck Sam!

100 % - like many words discipline has multiple meanings - I like this definition for training: an activity, exercise, or regimen that develops or improves a skill; training…I think the reason some people don’t have discipline (like me with food) is it requires doing something you don’t want to (if it’s fun and easy, it doesn’t take discipline) - yet I have discipline for training…Osssss

Is it appropriate to "drop in" at other gyms as a guest/for one day or week or so, even if i'm just a white belt? I've really gotten back into jiujitsu again and even with my work/travel schedule, I'm willing to put in the effort/money to find a gym wherever I go.. just not sure if it's a common/appropriate practice.
