A great and very smart video!! This is a must see video for everyone who's capturing. I hope all the third party vendors look at this and hopefully are starting to use the same settings because sometimes the levels are all over the place. They say that it's not possible to provide us users with numbers because there are a lot of other factors involved, discussion closed.... You proved them wrong with this video IMHO.I hope this method will set a "standard". You do a marvelous job.

Excellent work J!!! Waiting on the delivery of my TONEX. Have primed my interface etc to .750mv and ready to stat capturing my JMP and peds. Have tried many different modellers and most recently Aida for capturing. Was never really never happy with the gain levels and top end freqs so interesting to compare. Although did not know what I know now after the vid 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Do you use an Instrument cable from the line out of your interface to the tonex capture? or is it a line signal cable?

+++ dear Jason, I can´t thank you enough for this highly scientificly sofisticated explanashion+++ i was following the debate from the beginning on and also the reaktions of some guys in their videos. Finaly this is the proof and the ultimate Answer for all "input Trim" Questions. i just made my first Capture right before i saw your video, no i see much clearer what i made wrong. I am 58 years old and do recordings on PC since 1990" ish". I am using my Tonexpedal in Loop in my Helix and my Marshall JVM +412 i love both worlds 🙂. Thank you so much Jason for all i learned from You. Greetings from Hannover Germany.

Dont you always experience lower gain in the captures? Whats the benefit to use a reamping box?
@JasonSadites6 ай бұрын
I have not found that. My gain level is always exactly as the amp sounded. The reamp box is designed to take the Line out of your audio interface and send the proper impedance level into the front of your amplifier. Hope that helps :-)

Fully agree that the approach makes sense, and I would also love to see more third-party vendors (or even stock captures by IK) following a similar standard and provide their input level metadata. In the meantime, am I right in assuming that if I have set my input level relatively hot to sound good with stock captures, if I then load one of your tone models, I would have to turn the gain (or equivalently, input trim) down for them to sound authentic (i.e., as captured by you)?
@JasonSadites9 ай бұрын
Yes I agree, it would be nice to have actual numbers from vendors! You are correct in what you say about getting my tone models to sound as I captured them if you are cranking your input gain higher. For instance, on Tonex pedal, an Input Trim setting of -3 dB will sound identical to how I captured. If your Input Trim was set up around +8 dB for instance you could simply turn your Gain knob on the tone model/preset down to around 3.0 or so and get a very close sound. Hope that helps :-)

ok i finally wrapped my head around this, getting good captures, have to adjust the trim to about 2 o'clock to get the result to sound nearly the same. was trying your captures out and the free ones are really good and consistent, but i do find i need to give them a little more input to break up naturally with my lower gain humbuckers, well 14k and 16k region vs fluence moderns. all in all i am finally understanding this better and am able to copy my headrush prime paid for captures over. thank you!

Fantastic video - I'd been messing around with my gain staging for a while but never got to the level of a multimeter - brilliant! Please do an Amp DI capture video, would be great to see what other tips you have there.

Awesome as usual ! I am not as technical as you at this point so bear with my questions. If I buy your captures what is required on my setup to have them sound as intended? Also would be awesome to hear your ideas on stomp captures. For me it would be great to capture my analog settings on my OD pedals > ToneX pedal, then I could integrate those with midi type snapshots for complete rig one press type setups😎
@JasonSadites9 ай бұрын
I will likely do a video on DI and pedal captures in the future :-) For my tone models to sound identical to how I captured them, on Tonex Pedal you should set your Global Inpout Trim to -3.0 dB. Hope that helps :-)

Hey Everybody! Im just trying to get back into playing guitar after 6 years of break (4 of my kids born %-P) and I am a complete novice in sound tech.. i just own a few guitars and a Marshall Code 25 (that I have been using with my headphones on lately) Injust bought tonex and I use it as an interface so that I can play backing tracks on my pc and use tonex tones that I love. However, if I would like to play through a speaker that I could also use on stage with Tonex, what do I get? Im gonna play a concert next year, and so should I have a speaker for monitoring on stage? I should just buy desktop speakers for home use and not worry about monitoring? I played quite a few concerts backnina day, but i always used a tube amp with 4x12 cab that was miced.. thanks in advance for tips.. Just a side note, the reason i bought tonex is so that i get all tube amp sounds without dipping into my kids college money (jk)

Have you experienced the “silent recording please check current audio settings“ message? And if so, do you know how to solve it. I matched sampling rates with my audio interface, which is an Apollo. It let me do a couple of profiles, and then it suddenly stopped letting me and nothing has changed as far as signal flow. I just thought I’d ask, because I have not been able to find a definitive answer online. thank you in advance.
@drausiofonsecatronolone56117 ай бұрын
So it means you cannot get a model from a separated guitar track as you do with VRC for voice? You need to get access to the original amp... I was going to sell my kemper. But....
@Luke-f6z7e8 ай бұрын
Hi Jason thanks for the detailed walkthrough of this! My capture results have definitely improved. I have a quick question. If I'm sending a line level output from my interface into the Tonex Capture box, and then out of Tonex Capture into my amp without any attenuation (leaving the knob at 0db), am I essentially hitting my amp input with that full line level signal? I just want to be sure I'm not overloading my Princeton especially as I start to do captures with higher amp volume. Thanks!
@JasonSadites8 ай бұрын
My pleasure :-) If you followed the calibration steps I laid out in detail at the start of the video, you will be fine. Hope that helps!
@Luke-f6z7e8 ай бұрын
@@JasonSadites Thank you it does! I was able to calibrate my send and return levels with a multimeter like you described. I just can't tell if getting 0.775v out of the cable going into my amp means I'm hitting the front end of my amp with 0db of signal or -11db of signal
@BushidoPhoto5 ай бұрын
I can't get my capture device to play the sample tones that generate the capture. I either get squealing feedback from the amp or no sound when I click capture. I don't like the multiple cables going everywhere and I slowed down and ensured it was all hooked up correctly, but I feel I wasted my money.
@JasonSadites5 ай бұрын
I would need a lot more info about your setup to help. What audio interface are using for starters?
@freaksarise6 ай бұрын
Hi, for the line 3 output that feeds back into the capture hardware, are you sending a specific channel to that output? or is it the same output going to your monitors? In my system I have an output matrix and need to define which signal is patched to the "line 3 output". Thanks!
@JasonSadites6 ай бұрын
The Line 3 output is its own output. It is used to send the training signals to your amplifier/pedal depending on what you are capturing. Hope that helps :-)

Any recommendations for getting pedal captures of low gain/boost sounds to actually have level. I captured as hot as possible (-1 below clipping at any point during the capture process) and yet its still quieter than unity in both tone x and amplitube. It shouldn't be its coming back way hotter then the test signal is sending (ie should be above unity) but whatever IK uses to somewhat normalise kicks the volume down a lot on dynamic signals. On the high gain stuff it is the opposite problem being a lot louder despite the pedal itself not being louder (rms is probably on par, peak is much lower).
@JasonSadites6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that is the nature of cleaner tones. The peaks are going to be much louder than the RMS. I get around it by using the compressor after the fact in the preset to control those peaks on the cleans which will then allow you to up the volume before clipping. If set properly it can be quite transparent. Hope that helps :-)

@@JasonSadites yeah it's just annoying that tonex turns down everything by that amount . There is plenty of headroom there but the level tonex captures at means I can't capture any of my boosts and have them function as boosts.

until there is a standard for gain staging while creating these captures so that every capture represents the actual level of a guitar at zero trim input, I’m not buying this. For all of the research and development I came multimedia has put in, they need to account for this, and have a stamp of approval for creating captures.
