One question I get a lot and something I hear being discussed concerning Tonex is whether we should be using Direct captures or Amp/Cab captures. The answer to this will depend a lot on how you personally use Tonex but I wanted to do a video to show how different (or similar) they actually sound. I hope this helps shed some light on this topic.
If you like the tones you heard in the video, you can grab them at the links below:

Jason, I'm making my own captures and I just snapped to this: My direct capture includes the amp's Presence and Depth settings from the power section of the amp. When using the capture with IRs or VIR it sounds great. When using with my SD Powerstage 170 directly into cab it sounds great as well. When using the return of my EVH 5153, it applies the presence and depth control from the amp again, making the tone scooped and brighter, not bad, but way brighter. I'm about to make another capture with the Presence and Resonance at zero to use with the return of my EVH 5153 and then use the presence and resonance of the amp. This will only be an issue for people using the return of tube amps with presence and depth controls. Have you looked into this already?

interesting! I'm doing some captures from my Marshall SV20H using the tonex capture box and the amp out from power going to tonex capture into a fractal lb-2 loadbox or to a bugera powersoak connected to a greenback. So my point is to check if the capture hardware "eliminates" the response factor from cab or not, since it's between the power output and the cab/load. I'm not sure yet, but will be after some more tests. :) but as you said, what's matter is if it sounds good, doesn't matter what was used. Thanks for the content!

Until few days ago, I was 100% only using profiles Amp + Cab on my ToneX. But then IK Multimedia released the High Gain heroes collection, by chance I tried some the amps with my York Audio and MLSoundlab favorite IRs, I was just blown away. I mean there are great profiles, amp and Cab but the amps are as well a killer feature in ToneX.

just out of interest… which MLSoundLab IRs are your favorit ones

@@7riXter I would say the Freeman pack which is based on a Friedman 4x12 with Greenbacks and Vintage 30. With the different mic combination I can make it sound like a mesa trad or a Bogner.

I did a similar experiment and came to the same conclusion. The High Gain collection they recently released included both direct and amp/cab captures of the same amps. Using one of the Marshall direct captures, I applied the cab of the same amp's amp/cab capture. If the algo for subtracting the cab was highly accurate, you would expect little difference between the 2 tones in this experiment. But the tone where I manually applied the other capture's cab was drastically different and much less pleasing to my ears (very honky mids)

I think I have Tone Overload from too many choices. Almost two weeks ago, I reduced the number of pickups in my Strat from two to one. I'm seeing if I can have my HX Stomp do most of the heavy lifting regarding tone.

Hey Jason, awesome video! I use the tonex through one of the effects loops on my helix, and I use my helix 4 cable method through my tube amp. Sometimes I'll use the preamps/amps on the helix, sometimes I'll use an amp capture off of tonex, and sometimes I just use my tube amp's preamp. Do you think that the direct captures with the baked in cabs, when the cab is bypassed, will effect the sound differently than if it is just a amp capture without the cab?

I know what I'm asking is very similar to what you described in the video, but I'm just wondering on the Preamp side of things and not the cab side of things.

Does anyone know what the maximum IR length that can be utilitzed in the Tonex software? The pedal? In other words, at what length does Tonex truncate IRs? 40ms? 100? Less? More?

I bought the Tone Junkies purple plexi and I love it, but the direct capture sound very muddy, and changing the cab on the regular profiles sound strange, as if I had a wah pedal on and locked in one position

In a best scenario I'd make my own IRs of my cab and then capture my amps then I could mix and match. Since Tonex splits the amp and cab in the software only through the cab, it can't be as precise when you split the amp and cab than if you were to do it seperately.

why wouldnt it be the best? why would u lock a player to use your cabs? not saying “you” Jason. just saying in general. I have my own cabs i like.

5:48 yeah the swapped one sound a bit like when you accidentally put multiple IRs on a signal. I like the thought that with the amp/cab capture I get exactly what the person offering the capture intended… but since cabs really are a matter of taste I think I prefer DI captures.
I Bought the AXE IO and Amplitube 5 Max Bundle, and its AWESOME
