Every generation of gays has their own slang and language that they use to differentiate themselves from the straight world and keep the outside world at arm's length. But it doesn't always work though, many years ago I was heading home and this guy who knew who I was screamed "F*G" at me, and I was really surprised at how it really cut to the bone and hurt for a long time. My friends and I called each other that all the time and thought we were numb to that horrible word, but that incident proved that no matter how many times your friends call you that it still hurts when someone says it with an evil mean intent.

@@hibiscusboy I am far from an expert and it might not exactly mean "thirsty" but you might be able to use かまちょ(kamacho) ? But it may mean something more like a needy-person 🤔 I'd try and confirm with someone with more knowledge 🙅‍♀

Well, as a Japanese gay person lived outside Japan far too long, there are so many gay words I don't and didn't know about I saw today. But those old fashioned ones are still in my book and I still see some gay people in Japan use them and saw they were using them on KZbin but I guess it all depends on the each person, age, the context...etc. I assume, however, I wouldn't understand many or most of new gay expressions among very young generations. The word "Okama" is definitely old but I think you can still use it among gay people in the context like pointing out in the other gay person in a light joking manner that he is truly "gay" but obviously it should be refrained for straight person to use it in front of gay person. "Hogeru" is I think when the person may or may not look necessarily effeminate but when they talk, they definitely has "Onee"(オネエ) expressions. And I have recently learned from "2nd street" channel. They are hogeteru when they talk. It was fun to watch how each one of cultural background will determine the deeper emotions or even hidden implications to get the point across to the other who mutually understands exactly what the person is talking about and foreigners may not 100% get it sometimes because I know Japanese people have their own unspoken expressions without saying it. It's very interesting, isn't it?

I think that in every group there will be those words which if you say it inside the group, it's not a bad word. But if said from someone outside the group, it'll be offensive.

So very torn about the usage of the term 'Homo' because y'all are telling me not use it, but I very strongly believe in reclamation of language that can be used as derogatory against a group as being empowering for said group. Just as over here in Montreal, Canada amongst my friends we will gleefully greet each other with "hey f*gg*t!" but will cut a bitch if someone tries to use it against us. Homo falls into that same category. In Japan could we not use it amongst ourselves? Like 'ホモです。' I legit have a couple of crop tops that say 'ホモ' on them and wear them with pride. 😎🏳️‍🌈

The English word "member" is still widely used by Cantonese gays to refer to the community. I wonder if that's an influence from Japan. Mainland China has moved on to the word "contact list" (通訊錄). I can't think of a word like that in the US, perhaps it's because anonymity is not a concern any more culturally.
@ChasMusic

Ah, I remember "okama" from the movie "Okoge" (which i would guess is also rude and old-fashioned). But it's a good movie. "Kocci no hito" reminds me a lot of "Worships at our church" (which is probably also old-fashioned here in the US).

I am sure the following were also on your list but possibly you didn't have time but I have also heard "kirakira gay キラキラ・ゲイ" replace "shiny gay" though it also refers to gays on a higher income doing stuff that could be seen as priviledged. Also 組合。I don't know if this is old fashion (it certainly aint new), but we've been using it for years now instead of お仲間. Finally the word ホモ in Japan is especially interesting as it is seen as particularly hurtful for a certain generation of Japanese who grew up in the 1980s and 90s when とんねるず's had their runing joke with 保毛尾田保毛男(ほもおだほもお)。However much much older Japanese (who are now in their 60s and 70s) still prefer the word homo to gay. So the word basically went from being okay to rude and then now more neutral as the younger generation no longer have that point of reference. My favorite tho is エビ専 (ebisen) which is used for people who only sleep with men for their bodies (because, like shrimp, you discard the head and only eat the body)

6:50 question: since I do not know japanese but a few words like onanoko and onanohito (girl and woman - I hope I get it at least a bit right), does onakama have this "female" silible, or is it just something completely different?

There have been several times in the past where (straight) friends and/or coworkers have embarrassed me by introducing me, referring to me, or 'labeling me' as GAY when in conversation with others. I find it very offensive. I am either a friend or a coworker (sometimes both). I have a name. My lifestyle choice is NOT tattooed on my forehead like a name tag. To get my point across; I calmly told a few of them (after-the-fact) that I felt insulted as I don't refer to them as "BREEDERS" in any conversation with others. One time a (clueless) friend was pushing 'the label' so much that you could see the other people were becoming extremely uncomfortable, glancing at me with apologetic looks. I finally broke up my "friend's in depth dicussion" by laughing very loudly and saying "Oh you HETERO People are just so funny!" Made the others laugh and my dimwitted friend dropped his "what a great GAY Friend I have here" speech. On track: Some of the "tems" that you reviewed and described were "cute" to me. Not like the Drag, Leather, Daddy, Club, Flamer, Screamer, Drama and other labels I often hear. Even a few of the "outdated" terms was acceptable to me. Thanks for sharing!
