I think a lot of people don’t pay enough attention to limbs landing together to make one sound . Everyone is really into linear grooves these days . They are great , sound cool and are useful but i think it’s important to land stuff together to make one sound instead of sort of flamming things .

I read a Tony Williams interview where he mentioned that he practiced playing all four limbs hitting at the same time and with one limb go from soft to loud and then switch that to the other limbs. It’s a great excercise. I’ve noticed when i practice that and verbally count with the click my time keeping feels much better.

I’d say left foot (hi-hat) time keeping is one of the most neglected parts by TONS of drummers.

Great topic of discussion! The left foot hi hat in general is super neglected. So much to dissect here for sure!

Sounds great Juan!!! For my opinion... Every drummer should be able to discover when he's facing the moment of losing their groove, that subtile, intense feel that gives you goosebumps!! Sometimes less is definitely more!! This video you made is a great example of how drumparts can groove to a maximum level without adding too much!! Every drummer or musician in general can and must be in heaven reaching that moment of electricity!!!!

Definitely a deep conversation to have here. I wonder though how do you know if you’re in “deep groove?” What might be a deep groove for you may not be the same for someone else. How do you learn how this feels? Just something that is super interesting to me and how do you teach/learn that?

Maybe push and pull and Moeller also. The first one because it's efficient on speed notes and jazz music and the second one to have a nice powerful rimshot and also speed but sometimes we are so lazy.

Absolutely! Also, I can imagine with your amazing brush skills you have a PLETHORA of ideas. I'm a firm believer or limitation so that it forces you to become creative. I think that's why Stick Control, New Breed, etc. are all classics because you can create YOUR OWN stuff or at least force you to think outside the box. Hope all is well mate!

This is one is tough for me because I think it's super important, HOWEVER, I look at guys like Mark Guiliana and he's got a more finger/wrist approach and it's beautiful. Or if you listen to Ari Hoenig, he may not be the best "looking" (Ergonomically and no shade at all because I LOVE his playing), but his sound is beautiful. So is Moeller really needed? I don't know. That's a tough one to answer.

I find it flattering that a amazing drummer like you ( don't underrate yourself🤔😉) asks that question to me. I'm far less experienced after 24 years of playing than people like yourself. I'm sure you'll agree that drumming is second nature, but great drummers like gavin harrison, anika nilles and yourself ( now you have my top 3 😎) have that sort of great mathematical approuch i think. So, for me searching and finding that feel of grooving maybe isn't teachable. It's a personal moment of happyness wich comes easy to the surface when playing in a band with all members feeling that same thing at the same time.

Great thoughts! I just love to talk and research how people find certain things. It's the spark that makes me dive into what someone else's thoughts are. That's always been intriguing to me because there's not one "right way" and hearing these perspectives just challenges me to think outside of the box. Thanks for the comment!
