Designing a home that fully supports your needs is NOT about decorating. It's about ensuring that systems are in place to help you function more efficiently and comfortably in your space. Styling should come last. Spend less time buying new things and more time understanding how you live. Which room in your home needs a little more attention today?

Wow! You could make a stress free video each week forever and I’d take notes each week. I’m loving white and neutrals at the moment and you made me realise why. Growing up with hideous colours my parents chose, mismatched furniture, a lot of books and leftovers from relatives made me hate my environment. Living with a hoarder also did that. Seeing so many neutrals over the past 5yrs made me want a calm decluttered home.

I am am just slowly changing from the summerlook (bare floor, light coloured pillows) to winterlook (darker colour pillows, more draping, carpets) and I have saved up for a new ratan chair that I can pick up in a week! Will probably throw a blanket over it for winter. I am saving up for a secondhand chest of drawers for the entrance, the one I have there is falling apart... The fengshui is perfect in my house. The cristal that will bounce light all over is arriving next week. I have mirrors for some extra light.

I’ve painted my orange timber wood kitchen cupboards the last couple of weeks. It’s the first time in 17yrs that I’ve gone into the kitchen without screwing up my face. It’s such a subtle neutral and while there’s still yellowy cream bench tops and subway tile, it’s making such a difference. It’s made me want to stop at the entrance to every room and pay attention to what my face does and how I feel before walking in.

@6.51: This is the absolute best reality-based garage conversion I've ever seen. The detail of matching wood tones with the ceiling and oversized bookcase really bring the space together effortlessly. The curtains on the overhead door track just makes perfect sense in a beautiful way. Adding a glass door in lieu of a regular wood or metal door, let's in a gang of light and adds the perfect amount of warmth. I swear, if it were not for the overhead garage door opener, there's no way I would've looked at that image and seen a garage space. In fact, I didn't even notice it until viewing this video a second time. You make me wish a garage! Bravo, JK! Bravo! That's what I'm talking about!

Hi Julie Terrific work today! The most important element of design is do you like it? If you did not have input then it’s not yours. Even if you hire out talk to the designer give them pictures. And live in the residence bf you go all out. What is the light like in the residence throughout the year. What rooms get warmest or coldest. Decorate for the room. Make it comfortable for you your family and your guests. Get rid of sharp edges and tripping hazards. Carpet your stairs and have varying height seating for all types of guests. Not everyone has the same capabilities. Do you have toddlers ? Make sure you have low seating for them. They will use it. Put it near low book shelves with books and toys. Rugs are good for children too. You can buy very good quality rugs and they will hold up. High pattern darker colors wool or washable are great. If you have white walls that’s ok bring color in different ways like art work or furniture. Grey floors? Reddish hues plants brick tones. But make it yours bc it is yours. That’s how I design as a lay person. It’s my place. I never think about designing for resale. I have seen you change over the years I have been watching you and soon I know you will be changing again as your family evolves. It nice you have that jewel toned lr. That’s a beautiful room. Especially that turquoise console. I know you live in a place that really does Halloween. Maybe you could show us what they do to decorate for Halloween? Do your children go to those houses? I can tell some are done by professional set designers. Have you switched out for fall ? Have a great week Julie! 🥰🥰👍🏻❤

Yes! You ask as many questions of a space as I do and it’s a fun way to do it. I certainly didn’t get much input into my home when I lived with a hoarder and he didn’t like anything of mine and would tell me so. I’m single now so I’m going for my design only even on my budget. ❤

I think of black and white colours. As a quilter I love putting colour together but don’t want that in my home so much. Seeing maximalist spaces with every saturated colour doesn’t do it for me but going through the options of less saturated colour was awesome. I love dark green turquoises to go with plants. I think it adds a pop of colour with subtly going with the neutrals too.

I’d love to see more on scale and proportion especially with height of sofas and what’s on your eye line with standard ceiling heights. I finally finished the flooring and walls in my home that I bought 4 years ago. Now I want to have parties and gatherings. I’m stuck with how much seating that I’ll need to host. It’s just me and my son so we’re fine with one small sofa and small dining table of 4. Do I add seating and more dining chairs that are more permanent or do I buy stackable/foldable seating that are stored when we don’t host?
@JulieKhuu2 сағат бұрын
You can also try pulling ottomans from the living room to start if you have them. Foldable chairs are great for parties, but I would use filler furniture for now until you’re ready to invest in something more permanent. Unless you have space to store them away of course!

I have a question. Julie do you have an opinion about color for a home that’s at the beach besides blue? I love warmer colors generally and want to have a modern but beach cottage yet elegant design and style. A lot to answer I know but if you’re able to give me ideas? I love your videos and style.
@HappyHarryX57 күн бұрын
What I do in that situation say to myself, “Hand on heart what colour do I want?” and don’t think about, just assess the first quick answer in my mind. Mix your styles through your colour scheme and use textures make them pop. Modern can be timeless especially with limited patterns and mainly plain fabrics. Choose mainly modern with 10-15% beach cottage but don’t theme-y with the beach like a lot of coral or beach this way signs, etc., rather things that hint of the beach cottage theme. That’s what I’ve learnt over the years. If you like coral of course, pop some in.
@JulieKhuuСағат бұрын
I’m not someone who designs for a sense of place. I find it perfect acceptable (downright favored) to decorate how you want to in your private home regardless of house style, location, what others think etc. If you love sunset hues, look for beach photography and images to help inspire your color palette. You’ll find lots of blues mixed in with oranges, reds and yellows. If you love a monochromatic Japandi vibe, I could definitely see that in a coastal environment. So many ways to interpret a beach theme without going totally nautical 🤎

Love your observations and design tips, Julie! Live plants are a must for me as well.😊🪴 In addition to having a home that is both beautiful and comfortable, it should being easy to keep clean. Having lots of decor elements is not only visually annoying to me, but it all needs to be shuffled around to dust and vacuum. For example, the room at 5:08 would be a nightmare to maintain. I get a backache just thinking about moving all those low stools with stacks of books piled on them just to vacuum or sweep. Even a Roomba would have a hard time maneuvering around all that clutter!

Fireplace in the bedroom has too much active Yang energy for a place of Yin rest according to Feng Shui. Treat it like a storage space- books, plants, makeshift dresser. If the fireplace is in the South wall of the room, use candles to help ignite the fire element without turning on the too “powerful” fire. If it’s in the north sector (water element) paint the box black to promote water colors 🖤
