Here is another shop trick - use a red brick (yes a brick) and drag your rod across it. Takes off the coating/slag and it is ready to weld as the arc strikes readily (don't need to tap it). Can do it in the filed but it is up to you. Try it - you'll like it! You can also do it to a bundle and have them ready to go in a bucket. Yup - I do it when I stick (doesn't work that well with my mig, however).

Good video. THNX. ! As a retired welder myself, I had my way of doing things. Was there a better way ? Probably. From the beginning, I tried to pick up tricks and techniques from everybody. All of the various welding related web sites, on line today, are great. I still learn a lot. I'm teaching my friend to weld, in his garage. I add all the new on line tips and tricks to our sessions. It took me years to get good. He's picking it up way faster than I did. I pretty much had to teach myself. Back then, you only got about 10 mins. instruction before being put onto job.

I went to Tulsa welding school. I was on 6g and was leaving under cut on top, and instructor came in one and saw the problem. one side was fine , but was not rotating on the other side, hang at the top rotate to fill in under cut. Simple, but took the eye of my instructor to set me straight!!

I don’t really. I had plantar fasciitis for about three years from standing on locations with big rock on top of Soil cement. Now all I wear is Sperrys lol

@@TaylorWeldingAs a retired welder, I too only wear Sperry canoe shoes. No socks, summer or winter. Snow or no snow... No socks. Socks make my feet sweat. Moist socks = cold feet.

Did you confess? I’d sure like to know a little more. I had situation where my younger brother took a pretty good butt whip in for a mistake I made. I felt sad at the time but my dad made up for it in later structure development.

What about those overseas videos where the guys are using welding electrodes that they bend like a pecker at the end? Why do they do that? Always wondered if there was a legit reason? And I mean, every rod is treated that way.
