Jan, just seeing you look so happy has made my day ☺ The photos & video clips you took are breathtaking!! You never cease to amaze with your work. It is said that passions don't have a reason, but since discovering bird photography, I find it such a privilege to be out in nature just observing birds in their natural habitat. If I can get a few good shots , I'm thrilled. But even if I come home without any photos, the sheer joy of being able to go out in nature is beyond compare. Thank you for another amazing video!

Beautiful , Jan. Looks like video is better than still photo for this scenario. What lens/body/settings combination would give high quality frames that could be grabbed as stills?

You could film in 8k, but most frame would be blurry, unless you are using a much higher shutter speed and then the video may look funny.

Your coming back stronger than ever Jan ! 👍 So glad to see it 🙂 Funny you should ask, as a matter of fact, I was in a very "dark" forest yesterday, and taking shots that I really didn't expect a lot from... But was hoping they would process okay. To my surprise, they came out really nice ! Obviously I could have done better with better light, but for what I had to work with (oh, I was using my R5 + the RF 800 F11 !) It was actually pretty amazing I could get anything useable at all !
@jan_wegener Жыл бұрын
F11 is certainly tough in the forest, but what you can get out of high iso images with a bit of editing is amazing

Hi Jan. I really enjoyed the episode and it inspired me to visit the same spot. So today I sat on the same deck and saw the same perches that you had shot the rifle birds at. The rifle birds are very persistent and literally will land on you to get what they want. But how well did the Canon R5 and the 100 to 500 RF working low light! With a bit of tweaking using the Topaz Photo AI. I have been using DxO PureRAW 2 but I've recently been using the Topaz because it's a one stop shop to get everything from de-noising, sharpening, etc. all in one software so it's easy to use. It's truly a magic spot isn't it.

@@jan_wegener Thanks mate! I almost had the Chowchilla on your log this AM (Wegeners perch). But the Brush Turkeys chased it off. They've taken over that log and even chase off the Rifle birds. You should come up and launch of counteroffensive.

JAN, been long time viewer and bought R5 a couple of years ago. Shooting some wildlife, but mostly vintage race cars with 1.6 crop giving 800mm capacity. Incredible images -- I really enjoyed watching this landmark episode! I love the way you talk out your strategy and thinking as you capture these stunning images -- very educational. I'm quite impressed with the quality of your high ISO images, many of which were >=12,800. I also use DXO PureRaw2, but my high ISO images usually look too animated for my taste. Your images don't have that same animated look, rather, they look, well, like stunning photos actually. I'm wondering if it is possible to get close enough to the birds and use a 70-200 f2.8 for those of us that don't own a Big White f4 lens? Thanks for sharing. Kind regards
@jan_wegener Жыл бұрын
In this spot you’d get some shots with 70-200. Dxo pure raw is a good helper but the whole editing workflow needs to work together to get the best results.

Lovely to see you out in the field again, Jan! This video is exceptional and the timing couldn’t be better as I’m heading to Costa Rica for a 2 week birding trip in a few days. I don’t have the luxury of that beautiful prime lens but I did get the 100 - 500 to use on my R7. I have a 1.4 teleconverter as well, but it really puts a damper on my aperture. I’ve packed my filter flash and I’m taking your video with me.😊 Thanks again for a phenomenal tutorial. Wish me luck!

What would you do if you were shooting auto-iso (like on an A1)? Would you bump up the exposure 1 or 2 stops?
@jan_wegener Жыл бұрын
I would find it hard sometimes because the camera may want to change exposure when I don't, which can easily happen when the background is bright and the bird dark. So I often prefer to set the exposure for the bird and have it not change at all, unless I wanna change it, hence I use full manual

Jan, this was a FANTASTIC video! This helped bring several things together for me that I'd been struggling to understanding. It definitely filled-in some blind spots for me. I have the R7 and my high-ISO shots aren't nearly as clean, even with DXO Pure Raw 2. I'm guessing that's a lot to do with the R7's cropped sensor and the smaller pixels on the sensor. I also have the RF 100-500, but don't yet have a big prime like you have. So I don't yet have the luxury of being able to switch to a super telephoto prime that can gather more light. I'd love to see a video explaining the reasons for differences in image noise with different cameras, sensors, lenses, and light. I get the basic concepts, but your images in seemingly low light are SO much cleaner than mine. Considering a flash/speedlite now because of this video. Maybe the new EL-5.
@jan_wegener Жыл бұрын
It’s not just pure raw but also the whole editing process and good exposure in the field that combine to the final result. Pure raw is just one step that helps a lot but alone isn’t enough.

Great video Jan and coincidentally I realized the same thing about light. I photographed some Pileated Woodpeckers, Varied Thrush, and Bobcats in very low light conditions and the 100-400 ii f5.6 was just not wide enough and I had to blow my ISO through the roof and still was underexposed on my R5. I've been saving up for the RF 400 2.8 now for these situations. What I envision doing is mounting the the 400 2.8 on my R7 for added reach and keeping the zoom on the R5 for closeups/handheld video.

Hi Jan, I love walking around the rainforest. Have your videos and presets but without the good images means little. I find that in the rainforest the lack of shooting spaces and the poor light is a nightmare for me with the R5 100-500mm.
