Secrets, Tips and Tricks - Garbage logs to GOLD Lumber!
Welcome to Hobby Hardwood Alabama - a real, professional sawmill lumber production business, ranked by a national website as producing the highest quality wood in Alabama, of about 45 different species. We are not a video company, but we are a real lumber company, and want to show others some of our money making and business sawmill in action techniques. This video is another example of sawmilling for our business, Hobby Hardwood, Alabama. We show how we mill logs with our wood-mixer sawmill, dry them and other things on our outdoor farm. We use our amazing fleet of hardware and tools, such as our custom New Holland Tractor, Wood-Mizer LT-70 sawmill, as well as our Cantek planers, Baker edgers, and SLR machines in action, operation, milling and while sawing logs to lumber. The Woodmizer LT Super 70 sawmill is the the biggest, fasted and most automatic bandsaw mill Woodmizer makes, with joystick control and Diesel engine. Very few sawmills are this fast, including Baker, Morgan, Harbor Freight, Cooks, Northern, Timber King, Norwood, Woodland, chainsaw mill, and Hudson. It’s not an Amish Sawmill, but the fastest and most modern band mill Wood-Mizer makes and produces the best lumber wood for wood working projects and our lumber business. We also showcase our Nyle Kilns and air drying lumber techniques. Lots of tips and tricks to make sawing and drying easier for beginners and professional woodworkers to keep our sawmill turning trees and logs into gold instead of firewood. My buddy, Nathan Elliot, of Out of the Woods Sawmill, OTW, convinced me I needed to start filming our operation, so here goes. Someday I want to have as many followers as other sawmill videos on KZbin, like Nathan and Outdoors With the Morgans. We show how to make money with your sawmill and pass on our how-to tips and tricks for better sawmilling. Watch us use our sawmill, chainsaw mill, band saw, and bandsaw, compact track loader and other Kubota and New Holland excavators.

Enjoy what feels like a conversation directly with you. Growing up my uncles family ran a large mill and my father had one when I was younger. They always said to anchor seal the end grains. I feel the sealing aspect is much overlooked in both presentation and context. It would be nice to hear a professional point of view on this, I no longer have people to ask in my life. Thanks
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 8 ай бұрын
They are correct, end sealing a log is crucial to properly dried lumber. Any hardwood mill should either seal the logs or the sawn lumber. I do either, depending on whether I need to see the grain when I'm sawing. I will do a video on it. I do not know of a single professional hardwood mill that dries lumber that does not end seal. It is that important.

Hello excellent video! Is there a chance to get a pdf version of the guide-book over to Europe, NHLA Standard thing? Please continue making these kind of videos! Very important topics! Maybe I'm asking too much - but im not good at remembering anything - what i do remember are basi rules - rules of thumbs - 101 rules etc... please point them out clearly in your videos so that a goon can understand it. What i have learned in this video is: 1. for hardwood - cracks shall be rectangular to the wider board face - boards are bowing around the short board face. 2. dont let sit the logs to long in the sun so they dry out and crack 3. keeping defects and the pith as much as possible in one board, 4. keept the pith parallel to the saw plane, 5. there are no ugly logs only bad sawers. 6. NHLA Standards in the US to be followed. Right? cheers!

I see you don't paint the ends of logs. Some folks encourage this practice. What are your thoughts on this practice?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 7 ай бұрын
I do it to the board ends, generally after I've sawn them. Sealing the logs (I don't use paint) obscures the end grain and hinders my ability to read the log when I'm sawing.

Not everyone wants grade wood to build barns and sheds. They don't want it planed or dried to save money and others want slab wood to build furniture.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama Ай бұрын
Of course, people buy wood of all kinds and at all prices, but all hardwood produced by a commercial mill is sawn using grade sawing techniques as I've outlined here in order to maximize grade and so maximize net profit. I'm not coming from the perspective of a lumber consumer, but from the perspective of a lumber producer, trying to have a successful business. The point of this video is that if you want be a professional sawmiller, you need to saw like professional, and all; professional sawmillers know the NHLA grades by heart, and no professional sawmiller will describe their wood as "Good." They will always use terms such as Number 1 Common, Number 2 Common, FAS, Select, frame stock, etc. Even a pro butcher has to make low value chicken wings as well as premium breast meat, but they don;t describe their chicken products as "chicken parts."
