Met Aubrey in about 2006. He was talking about his Methuselah Mouse prize, he had just awarded money to a lab tech for husbandry. Getting a mouse to live 30% longer by TLC. My own observation that mouse studies produced 25-30% improvements in LE non of which would be meaningfully translated into humans and why. We had a couple of beers over the subject. My takeaway way that Aubrey was pretty grounded in his expectation for the prospects for radical life extension.

@@danielkafer No he hasn’t. His first venture into life extension (2004) was the methuselah mouse project. He has always talked about “robust” mouse LE. That is achieving at least a 50% uplift of LE in a mouse model, that’s a level of life expectancy not achievable by a lab’ technician who’s just good at looking after lab mice. @danielkafer I think it will happen faster than the optimistic people expect Remember AlphaFold? The team that created that model has just released a paper about another - it is around their new technique for programming biology. Example: Ask it to predict a protein that glows like jellyfish protein - but not a jellyfish protein. A little bit of fine-tuning or back and forth produces proteins never seen before. They glow - in a brand new way. If you have a protein for a system to manufacture, it blends with existing gene editing techniques. I think we now have the tools to crack biology, and AI is now sufficient to perform a breadth and depth-based investigation for us in a highly automated way. Functional immortality will begin by 2030 for people on the research teams and their families.

I just want to be able to live the early life I couldn't get to live. Maybe in 15 years we will have age stabilization for 60 year old people. Longevity escape velocity is a very confusing term because people born today have already achieved it. The stuff we will have in 15 years will be too fluctuating to be applied to 80 year old people without a high chance of spilling into death and will be too imperfect to be an improvement for young (below 50) people. Therefore, "aging" escape velocity for 60 year old people. Some 25 years into the future it will be aging escape velocity for people of biological ages 40-80 (bringing back to 40 in a functional sense). Here, we are already treading on wild speculation, there is no way to know the obstacles and breakthroughs. I would expect that full age reversal will come in 35 years and will include structural fixes in 45 (without which you'd still have misshapen bones or skin, etc.). All wild speculation, it's just the time frame I feel might be most plausible or likely. Finally, in 50-60 years it might include active genetic and epigenetic fixes to customize out defects and provide enhancements. All of this is thinking outside a possible technological singularity but keeping the track of exponential growth, with AI simulations but without factoring AGI (AGI might take a few decades to get, ChatGPT is nowhere near it).

@@jimj2683 There have been some attempts at artificial discs. They are limited to the lumbar and cervical spine and there are quite a few risks involved. I think the spine is very hard to fix at the moment. We don't have a direct biological replacement to discs and the surgeries are very complex. In old age, if you do everything else right and never get injured, the spine will still cause issues due to the natural wear and tear from gravity and walking. Once the spine goes, it's much harder to maintain everything else that's required for health because there will be pain and less movement. The discs have very little blood flow and nourishment so it's an area that can fail even in the healthiest bodies.

@@danielkafer I couldn't care less about Logan Paul, but I'll check it out if it has something useful for improving the spine and discs. The holy grail would be disc height gain and the elimination of narrowing from facet hypertrophy, foraminal or canal stenosis etc.. These are currently considered irreversible and given enough time, they affect everyone. The body doesn't heal these properly because the spine doesn't have good vascularization like muscle does. Maybe nanobots could deal with the narrowing in some hypothetical future. ;)

I don't know much about health but it's a self-evident truth that drinking booze in the morning is not a recipe for longevity. Any specific reason for your opinion about about Aubrey? Who are you betting on instead?

Ironically he ain’t ageing to well 🥴😂

I believe he would look a lot younger with a different styling. Also he spend 12 hours flying just before the interview. Finally I am not sure looking young is what is most important for him - just my impression

Could cutting-edge science like AI and AGI-driven fitness strategies help athletes like Tyson defy aging and dominate in the ring again by 2040? Let’s explore these possibilities together! I’d love to hear your thoughts on how technology might transform sports and longevity in the future-let’s discuss!

De Gray look like the Sinclair's father...if you permit, I belive in Sinclair.
@danielkafer4 ай бұрын
De Grey and Sinclair do not differ that much in their opinions on longevity escape velocity, so no reason to not believe both. There is also an age difference between the two so there is a reason Aubrey may look older. Finally Aubrey was kind enough to do the interview right after a long flight, so he was quite tired while doing the interview.

And yet Sinclair is somewhat of a quack, while Aubrey hasn't been shown to be one at all.
@danielkafer4 ай бұрын
@@yourbrain8700well I think raising money for the research is key. Sinclair is more entrepreneurial in his approach selling supplements and so on. If the money goes back into research I don’t think that is such a bad thing. That said it is of course a fine line.

Well the point of what Aubrey de Grey is saying is that he is trying to cure aging and the real benefits of what he is working on can be seen in 12-15 years. He does not claim that he looks younger than he is.

Is not working like that. God is not stupid to let someone discover the magic bullet to live forever. You have to respect the rules and then yes, maybe you will live. Being vegan is a must. Than walking enough. Carrying about the Planet, orher livings and so on.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Alternately you could say that man is created with a Brian enabling us to design very sophisticated tools including AI. Perhaps we are meant to “cure aging”

imagine one generation claiming permanent ownership of earth. And an endless stream of new humans added to that reality. How is that going to play out? Write your essay in at least a 100 words.

Interesting - I believe birthrates will keep dropping as countries get richer. We are already seeing a decrease in population in many european countries, so people getting much older may not be that much of a problem.

Growing most of our food in greenhouses and switching our food crops to C4 photosynthesis means we can feed a growing population. Most deaths will be from suicide especially those with personality disorders so we need to remove these gene variants linked to these disorders like the MAOA-L gene variant which is linked to antisocial personality disorder.
