I think your point that such a diet can have uses in specific situations is an important one. Another creator I follow recently revealed she’s on an all-meat diet, but it’s, as you said, a temporary elimination diet under the supervision of her medical team. Her end goal is to add back in other foods slowly to identify what she does and doesn’t tolerate, not to keep on the diet forever. Without medical professionals to guide the reintroduction of other foods, it would be very hard to know what’s expected, how long to include one food before you can conclude whether it’s tolerable or not, what foods are best to try first, etc., so it’s way easier to eat a pickle, feel gross, and assume that means you just can’t eat pickles anymore. ☹️

I have Hashimoto's, which is a thyroid condition. I have learned over the years that it is very common for doctors to ignore or dismiss how a patient is feeling regarding their thyroid. Patients have to shop around and practically beg for a doctor to take their symptoms seriously. When they finally find someone who will listen, they work to adjust medication, and their symptoms improve. I'm not defending quacks, but when you're desperate, you'll listen to anyone who will listen to you and take you seriously. Thyroid function is still not fully understood, and almost every patient presents differently with different numbers. A lot of doctors will just look at numbers and assume you're fine when often the person is barely functioning. I had to beg my endocrinologist to take my hair loss seriously. She would look at my blood work and say, "oh it's normal, so you're fine. See you in 6 months!" She didn't care about me and my symptoms, she cared about the numbers. Yes, this is an anecdote, but almost everyone I've seen online or met in person that had thyroid issues had similar problems with doctors. No, don't take advice or supplements from a quack, but don't settle for doctors who won't listen.

I can speak from a similar place as someone with end stage Hashimoto’s (my immune system has killed all healthy thyroid tissue, so essentially no thyroid), severe asthma, and allergies to so many environmental things. I’ve been vegetarian since 2nd grade and vegan nearly my entire life. For the past 5 years of being diagnosed with hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s, my labs have jumped up and down and experienced debilitating symptoms. Chronic fatigue, migraines, weight gain, inability to lose weight, dry skin, inflammation of my face, topical skin reactions, excessive bruising, fevers when I’m stressed, and I know that something is genuinely wrong. I’ve been on multiple psych meds, been passed around to specialists who do one test and send me away again, and my life feels so utterly hopeless. There is no joy left and I’ve nearly been convinced by medical “quacks” as well just because I’m desperate for a solution, for relief. I also want to say that I really believe the thyroid weight gain is not just diet related, it truly seems to have a medical/metabolic cause because I am extremely diligent and still can’t lose weight or feel better. I eat protein (legumes, tofu, etc.), gone gluten free, severely limited processed food intake (occasional mock meats), and tracked my calories and macros by weight. Even with a moderate deficit that I can maintain and a steady exercise routine, I don’t lose weight. Sometimes I even gain it and develop worsening symptoms despite doing everything “right”. It’s easy to look for answers in the wrong places when all the right ones turn you away, tell you it’s all obesity caused (I’m slightly overweight, but a size 8 so I really don’t think obesity caused my symptoms), it’s in your head, or that they simply don’t know and can’t help you.

@Darmok_onthe_ocean So you're one of those who think the government should censor anyone who doesn't hold your religious beliefs? The vegan diet is the only diet that is a belief system. Some people diet to improve their health. Most diet for weight loss. A vegan diet is the most alluring because it requires the least amount of change and has the full weight of industry behind it. Let's face it. Who wants to eat bambi's daddy? Coke and cocoa puffs taste a hell of a lot better. But in a vegan world, there is no bambi. And humans can't live on cocoa puffs. Most of us have too much going on in our lives to stick with any diet. A carnivore will often stick because the health benefits are unbelievable. They call it the zero carb zen. They may have started it for simple weight loss, but then realized they had no idea what it could feel like to be truly healthy. After 2 weeks it got better and I felt amazing and by week 3 I didn't really care if I was just eating steak or not I actually felt the whole act of eating was annoying because I was bored LOL. HOWEVER this story isn't without issues. I was very hot all the time and whenever I'd wake up at night to pee or just in the morning my heart would be racing. In the 120s. I have a fitbit to prove this. I was told not to worry about it because my body was simply burning hotter. Mmhmm well this started to happen during the day too. Heart palpitations are no fun. I got to my 30 days, and gave up and ate some vegetables and fruit. I never lost weight by the way because I'm able to actually eat 2000 calories of fatty steak. It can happen during the first few weeks of a ketogenic diet. Being dehydrated is a common cause, as well as low electrolytes. Significant electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, and bicarbonates. Limiting your caloric intake can trigger heart palpitations. But you say you didn't lose weight, so that probably wasn't it. I'm curious, does that mean you were packing on the muscle? Since you were clearly losing water weight. I had an increased heartrate on carnivore. I added electrolytes - 2 per day to my water- and that went away immediately. The benefits have been weight loss- 30 lbs so far, 15 to go, blood sugar down to 80 the last time I took it from 117, blood pressure down which wasn't high but had been creeping up, no bloating or stomach issues except you do and I did have diarrhea the first couple of weeks which then stops, no issues going to the bathroom without fiber...the contrary I was having enormous bowel movements which were very uncomfortable with higher carbs and vegetables, I do sometimes have trouble sleeping because I have more energy that needs to be burned off but I haven't started a good exercise program due to long work hours but my body wants to move and do things, I couldn't have contemplated exercise before this diet, no aches and pains all over my body like I had before. On the downside, I do have psoriasis which was getting more severe a couple of years before carnivore...but it hasn't cleared up my skin. You are more full when you eat meat and don't have cravings for sugar and carbs at all or I don't. But you do still have to watch calories, especially women, because we don't need and don't burn as many calories as men. Long term, I will most likely try adding back in a few low carb vegetables and see where that goes after I reach my weight goals. I had tried 3 months of vegan before this and was miserable...constantly bloated, stomach issues, no way to ever get full, all I could think about was food, cravings out of control, weight gain because I had to eat so much food and was still hungry...always hungry. I can say from these 9 months I will always have a meat based diet.

I will say that right before going vegan, I was a vegetarian who ate eggs and went vegan to lower my very high cholesterol despite being an athletic body type - again, I have never struggled with my weight like she has, so I can't help her with advice BUT I AM EXTREMELY WORRIED about her cardiovascular health. Just as a side note...about 7 months ago I decided to change my whole diet for good and lost 55 bs (so far). I really think that the best idea if you want to get and feel healthier is to do a complete and PERMANENT overhaul on your diet. I almost fell into carnivore after being keto for a bit and low-carb for way longer. Keto started making me feel crappy after a couple months on it. Admittedly my low-carb life I felt pretty fine and controlled my weight kind of easily. BUT I found out it had caused my cholesterol to rise and keep rising. I tried not to worry about it. Eventually I became an ethical vegan but still concerned with health so I'm like 80% WFPB 20% processed. My cholesterol levels improved dramatically in only a few months and my weight actually has been even easier to maintain as well! Nothing magical has happened but I have a suspicion I'm going to be generally more healthy long-term than i would have been sticking to low-carb with lots of animal products.

@@rawmilkmike That is exactly the point. LDL has been proven to be causal. It is scientific consensus. If you would have done any research on that, you would know that. The discussion about it not being so is mainly on laymen’s level - since you could not convince scientists without significant counter evidence about being wrong about a topic that has been settled. Cholesterol is the marker LDL particles are getting measured with, hence it is called a risk factor, not a causal factor as LDL itself. It is not exact, LDL-C can be low, when particles are small carrying little cholesterol. In that case risk is UNDERESTIMATED by LDL-C. But if you look at the triglycerides, you can estimate if there are small particles or not. LDL-C does NOT OVERESTIMATE risk. And it is hell dangerous implying that. Why do you think it get‘s never mentioned in carnivore or low carb videos why LDL-C is not a good marker? Because it does not fit in their narrative. I don‘t get your math either. If you have 4 different risk factors increasing risk, and you remove 4, but raise one significantly, you still have 1 risk factor and risk is still high, and maybe even higher then before depending how high the raise in LDL particles has been. Nothing is canceled out. 4-4+1 is not zero. You have an error in your calculation. You have an logical error here too. Not all risk factors increase the risk in the same amount. There are more accurate calculations out then yours. You can find them online. There are scores calculating 10 year risk, select the one calculation that applies to you - sex, age, region of the world, ethnicity etc. It is more complicated then what you think - as if you have been the first having the idea… What your calculation is also missing is time, the longer the exposure - the more vessel damage might have happened. You also need to consider the fact that what damage is done now will impact your health outcomes in years to come, arteriosclerosis is usually noticed when there are symptoms, when you just can slow progression with the medications. You can not undo it. But what if we have somebody has 4 risk factors, let’s say hypertension, diabetes type 2, fatty liver, obesity. I deliberately choose the 4 you actually can change with diet - smoking and inactivity would not help. So let’s say with carnivore, you fix those 4, but get severe hyperlipidemia ( high blood lipids), is it really better then 1. loose weight by eating less calories then you burn, thus lowering your blood pressure and reverse your insulin resistance and thus get rid off your fatty liver and achieve diabetes remission. Great is that you can do that on any diet - it is simple thermodynamics. Count calories, get moving, find a sport you like doing. 2. Choose a diet low in saturated fat and not get hyperlipidemia. The nice thing is you can do that with almost any diet, if you modify it - there are even versions of keto. If the hyperlipidemia is genetic, get treatment. Why? There are people born with high LDL-C. If they got it from both parents, they have LDL-C around 500 already when they are kids and it can happen they have their first myocardial infarction in childhood when they are not on medication. So much to LDL-C is just one risk factor…. I don‘t want to see you or others at the clinic I‘m working at that is specialized in the recovery of cardiac patients. And no they are not all obese and diabetic. There was also a patient on carnivore, refused to eat the diet that was offered at the hospital and started discussing with my chief doctor how healthy meat is. What ended up happening was that he did not stay the intended 3 weeks, but needed to be transported in the second week to a different hospital for emergency stenting since he showed signs of a second heart attack. He looked not overweight at all but muscular - was maybe around 60. I don‘t know if he made it or not…. I do blame social media and such things, I blame the practices of politicians in the health care sector that many people like you have lost their faith in experts opinion now searching their answers on the web, and I blame the creators that use those situation creating confusion, explaining mechanisms and research, but leaving out half of the information since it is not in their favor, all to sell books, supplements, cook books, online courses, subscription services and of course KZbin money. If you want to be fooled by that it is your decision. I tried to warn you. Not everybody can be saved from their own decisions.

Even Stephanie Buttermore, I remember people were praising her for binging 10,000 calories of complete junk and filming it to "fix her hunger" after a long period of calorie restriction. Like even the "reasonable" professionals talked about that as if she was giving great advice. I simply don't understand why everything has to be one extreme or another. The stranglehold food has on people's psyches is so scary. Maybe this is just me, but how about developing coping mechanisms outside of food? Calling out misinformation may not "feel" encouraging, but it's 100% necessary. It's so easy to be persuaded by people making false claims because they're a fantasy, but don't have a basis in reality.

Even after researching and scripting for this video, she doesn’t understand how ketosis works
@daniborn2bwild8 Жыл бұрын
I think the biggest mistake we make is making the decision to follow a diet because it worked for someone else. We never take into consideration that we don't have the same bodies as the people we choose to listen to. When I found out I had PCOS, I researched as much as I could, and I only paid attention to people that had/have the same issue. I have heard that a carnivore diet has helped some folks with PCOS but im not entirely sure how sustainable it has been for them. If you have health issues that don't allow you to lose weight, please don't listen to people that don't or haven't dealt with the issues you deal with and please, DONT SELF DIAGNOSE. You can end up creating a bigger problem than it already is.

A former carnivore here. First thing that is a complete BS is that you are in deep ketosis on carnivore. You can be if you eat mostly fat. Otherwise liver will use amino acids to generate glucose. If one eats steaks only they are not in ketosis. I had bacteria overgrowth that would ferment any plant into alcohol in my stomach. That’s when I went carnivore. I’ve been a carnivore for almost a year but unfortunately my gut didn’t feel well although the rest of my body did. Now after multiple ways to stabilize my digestive system I eat heavily plant based keto. With fish as a main protein. Maybe I’ll eventually switch to vegan. But one has to be healthy to eat these grains and fruits. Because if you have bacterial overgrowth anywhere it will get worse.

Not like it’s important but, re: avocados- every avocado that grows from a seed is genetically unique and has different characteristics. Some have giant pits, some are really stringy or mealy. The avocados you buy in the store are generally all clones of a tree called a “hass” avocado which was chosen for its unique size and creaminess. They are cloned through a process called grafting where you cut off a small branch and grow it on the roots of a different avocado tree. Some foods we eat have been selectively bred by saving seed year after year, but that’s not the case with avocado.

I think this is a fairly reasonable response. I love Jaimie and was hoping you wouldn’t be snarky. I also understand her frustration. I concur with another comment that mentioned the fact that thyroxine is essential after thyroidectomy. I’m sad that we have so many dodgy doctors and nurses that give evidence based medicine a bad reputation. It’s outrageous that this naturopath calls herself a doctor, and one that specialises in endocrine disorders no less! The endocrinologists I know work soooo hard and look into things heaps, and I wonder what a proper one would say. And oh man the adrenal stuff 🤦🏻♀️ I have seen patients avoid chemotherapy due to their fear and I’ve been accused of pushing Big Pharma- as a nurse!! But yeah. We let patients down by not addressing things and then people feel they have no choice but to turn to quacks.

Caveat emptor is a Latin phrase that translates to "let the buyer beware." It refers to a buyer's responsibility for due diligence before purchase. A salesman should never be allowed to force their products on the people. Industry should never be allowed to censor information. It's up to us to determine what's disinformation. Veganism comes from people like Coca-Cola and Kellogg's. We're not talking about simple advertising here. And it's not only lobbying dollars.
@ohleander02 Жыл бұрын
Having Dr. In front of your name doesn't actually mean you're a medical professional. Because naturopath's aren't medical professionals. And there are some skeezy "drs" out there in the world. You have to do your research. And you have to go with a dr who is board certified and has worked in the scientific medical field and whose phd lines up with actual medicine.

I come from a family where my father side was obese. My sister's always been obese. I know what the mentality is. The one thing they do not want to adjust to is stopping the food that they're buying outside. My sister is famous for downplaying how much she actually consumes but that's her life. I can't judge her for that because now I'm fat due to lack of exercise and injuries.

It seems simple but it's not easy in practice is it? One of the things that people say that drugs like Ozempic help with is "food noise" and basically food addiction. I think that is a big problem for a lot of people.

I really used to like Jaime, but she is super easily roped into pseudoscience (cue the 'gall bladder cleanse'). She has some serious health issues and I feel for her, but she needs to go to a REAL doctor and if weight loss is her goal: start counting calories and cut out the foods that she reacts to. She buys into all of those 'ancestoral' bullshit, takes raw adrenal cortex (hi, BSE), but a day later shows a fridge full of Alani Nu energy drinks. Make it make sense. I'm also shocked she genuinely says it changed her life and she felt amazing when the whole video she is listing all of the ways in which she felt shitty. She lost weight because she ate in a deficit. That's it, that's the whole miracle.

I also tested positive for every single plant allergy but I have no symptoms from eating a plant based diet. My allergist told me that some people have very sensitive skin so the skin based allergy tests can be misleading. He looks for the strongest reactions, which in my case is grass pollen. I’m definitely allergic to grass pollen but I don’t have a problem eating grasses like wheat. I agree that an elimination diet would be extremely helpful, followed by careful reintroduction of plants.

I agree mostly with everything you said. When Jordon Peterson went on the carnivore diet it was because he was going through benzo with withdrawal. People that abuse and take benzodiazepines (xanax, ativan, klonapin etc...) for a long period of time become low in magnesium and phosphorus. You can take supplements for this but the best way to replace this vitamin is the keto diet. I just did detox for the same thing and found out I was very low in both magnesium and phosphorus. I'm not here defending Jordon Peterson for his wild statements or eating the carnivore diet but just wanted you to have the full information of why he was using this diet. I have been taking magnesium supplements since I got out of detox and my levels are back in a safe range. Edit: Spelling.

I have had lyme disease for over 20 years and suffered from debilitating vestibular migraines for many years. Lyme nearly destroyed my life. After spending thousands of dollars and years of misery and pain, I found the diet that has helped me the most is one that is high in animal proteins and very low carbs. I tried to do beans and legumes to get my protein but they are major migraine triggers so had to cut them out. This all of course has been a long journey to figure out what works for me and I am grateful that I found the key that gave me my life back. One diet is not better than another. Every body is different. Being vegan works for some folks and not for others. If I tried to be vegan I would set myself up to live in a nightmare of pain and lose everything that I have worked hard to achieve. No one diet is the right diet for everyone.

I totally agree with the main thrust of your video. One thing I question though is the assertion at the beginning that all different kinds of diets work about the same. That is no doubt true on average, but I do think there are individual differences, some people do better on different diets. If you look at any study on the effectiveness of a diet most people do better, some people do not. I am not at all saying that some people should be carnivores, more like maybe some people do better on lower fat diets, and some on lower carb diets. (I am not an expert of any sort.)

I thought it was a joke based on her usual content. It's ridiculous how many people fall for this in a crazy way. Especially the ones who go "it's the natural way, our ancestors ate this way!" That is so far from true unless we're talking people who live in extreme climates and whose diet is naturally somewhat more restricted than elsewhere. Liz Seibert is another one to look at with this weird fad of animal fat and protein. There, it's enriched by questionable unpasteurized Amish dairy and thinking it's wholesome and that the animals are raised better (Which is already ridiculous) and that unpasteurized dairy is somehow exempt from lactose-intolerance :D
