Add a google search into the rabbit hole of data-slash-soul searching, and we've got a fascinating journey of self-discovery and self-diagnosis. The process of being diagnosed with MS lead Mike down a road of bias. He explores this well meaning intrinsic bias through some real world examples.
Mike completed his Masters Degree in Public Health and Epidemiology at Memorial University. After graduation, Mike worked for the Department of Health and Community Services with the government of Newfoundland and Labrador as a Pandemic Planning Coordinator and Research Analyst. For the past three years Mike has worked for Eastern Health as the Clinical Epidemiologist for the Department of Infection Prevention and Control. Mike is currently completing his PhD in Clinical Epidemiology with a focus on improving hand hygiene compliance in acute care hospitals.

The main difference between your belief in who he was married to, and other beliefs we tend not to be willing to give up is one simple, and measurable thing: Emotion. The more emotionally invested we are, the less we are willing to change. This is evidenced in many psychology studies, particularly ones on the backfire effect. It's why people who get so passionate about things, refuse to change their mind. It's why anti-vaxxers, passionate about their fear of toxic chemicals refuse to accept those facts you show....it's why Creationists, who passionately attach their emotional beliefs in god to their view of creation (which of course, has nothing to do to most with or without evolution), reject facts about evolution. You had no emotional attachment to who Borat's wife is, hence you were willing to accept and change. Ego, and emotion combine to form a devastating adversary to reality. The solution: don't try to change people's minds. You never will. Instead, ask them questions to explain their views more and more and more, and lead them into areas they don't know, or cannot explain. The more and more they see their own uncertainty, the more they will start to see their views as incomplete, and start to accept evidence....so long as it doesn't challenge those emotions and ego. ;)

The examples here are pathetic news articles. if there is talk on vaccines get down to the nitty gritty of intelligent research and pseudo research. We may very well be surprised in what is found when we leave our biases out of it.
