I thrift everything. I buy nothing new. I don't buy things because they are cheap, just things that are high quality and fit into my wardrobe. If something doesn't work I sell it online or re-donate. I sometimes find surprise items, maybe vintage or designer, that I would never consider would suit me, but they can become my wardrobe staples, and no one else has them. So I can impulse buy with confidence.

I second your statement on not focusing only on the material contents but also on the quality and feel. As much as I like natural fabrics inmy sweaters and shirts, I have found that I dislike wearing 100% cotton T-shirts! to be honest, sometimes my well thought out purchases were a dud and impulse worked out much better. I guess impulse sometimes is an intuition and giving yourself too much time just makes you justify something that may not be for you. good video and a different persepctive.

@TheSharmam Your slightly brutal use of the word 'dud' had me lol 😄 I ALWAYS think I'll get the wrong buys to work somehow. More often than not, it's the long march through various closets and shelves, till finally hitting the donate pile. Your word 'dud' immediately made me think of some seriously considered failures. Often for a big price, thinking they'd be 'forever items'.

So glad you talked about the benefits of polyester. Some of my *nicest* clothing is high quality polyester. It's wrinkle resistant and drapes well. There's also a lot of cheap polyester out there, but that's a cost decision that a brand makes, not inherent to the fabric in general.
@melaniemcneil4074 ай бұрын
Yep, I bought a lot of high quality "corporate" wear, suits, blazers, suit slacks, blouses, when I was working. An awful lot of it was at least a poly blend. Wool with a bit of poly? Cotton with some poly? It looked great, it wore well, it was easy to care for.
@olga.methodologist4 ай бұрын
Totally agree with your point about polyester. My favourite pair of flowy trousers is made of polyester too, and they are really light and breathable, easy to take care of (I had a viscose pair before which shrunk after the first machine wash at delicate cycle). However I don't own a single polyester top, because I get a sauna effect momentaniosly, just because they are too close to the body 😅

Great topic! I looked in my closet at my impulse buys and two things popped out immediately - bold colors and texture. I think it’s because neutrals feel safe and undoubtedly will offer a good return on investment. But my style words are “flowy,” “layered” and “unexpected” so every once in a while my inner stylist rears up and says “we need something unexpected!” When I wear those items, I feel special, and get lots of compliments. It’s like you in the yellow dress, when you feel good about how you look, you shine!

Today’s topic is great!! I have moved on to thrifting first, if I’m looking for something. I sometimes find that when I purchase a thrifted item, unconsciously I tend to wear it more often than clothes that I’ve had in my wardrobe for years. Does this happen to anyone else? I can’t even explain it. Never been a shopper, always had a limited closet, just recently started thrifting (1 year ago). Am I the only one that does this?

Thanks to you, Alyssa, and Signe and Christina, I am buying more items pre-loved. I have been stalking a Ralph Lauren skirt on their website for several months . My new rule is to sleep on it and not to buy if I don’t need it. I got 2 wedding invites snd knew it would work! However, I am losing weight and knew it would not fit next spring. So I shopped Poshmark and found a skirt that was probably from last year AND the color will make it a breeze to style with what I have in my closet. I am also sending back online purchases that are not perfect! Baby steps.

Now I feel like you've given me "permission" to love them openly. Thank you. I am on a 5-year no-buy streak, so it will take a LOT to convince me to buy a new piece, especially if it isn't truly functional or special like those blue flats.
@teresacarle2944 ай бұрын
😉Her baby blue ballet flats make 💯% sense in her wardrobe, but maybe not in yours. Thought Alyssa made a valid point how certain colors that become beloved💖 in our closet can actually start to serve as a neutral for us. Love mostly dark neutrals, but I do have a smattering of lights & brights. Adore a tonal & matching monochromatic look, but I don't want to own shoes in every color of the 🌈rainbow. Other than my white sneakers, I look for a variety of shoes in navy, black, brown, & gray. Metallics work when nothing else will do. Trying to find some nude or even light tan options to go w/my other colors. 😊Find fashion influencers & other folks online push natural fibers like they are the 💫 holy grail〰️but the truth is touch & my instincts on comfort in my extreme 😎LA climate has never steered me wrong. Of course, we rarely if ever experience any high humidity w/our 🌞sun & high heat🌡. Dry heat has it's own challenges, but any tropical humidity is a killer... Besides, never been a fan of the feel of silk😖 or how messy natural linen looks after a few hours in it😂. 🤓While I love cotton, it's weight & breathability is also important. Always been truly picky in a tactile sense. Have had excellent experiences w/synthetics & also tech fabrics that have moisture😰 wicking properties. 😠Do hate the sense of superiority & shaming that seems to exist in this realm. ❤May you wear your favorite pieces w/joy & abandon🎉! 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

I would adore those flats in the exact same colour as Alyssa's. They would absolutely make sense in my light-neutral wardrobe . I live in South Africa (right now) where the weather is absolutely mental. So I need a balanced wardrobe. Since I travel quite a bit, creasing etc is an issue since no one wants to pay for hotel ironing fees all the time or travel with a travel iron which, IMHO, doesn't do that great anyway. I love some easy-wear items and find I only reach for the silks, linens and so on while on vacations or time at home. It doesn't make much sense in a high-use wardrobe. Color isn't as hard as everyone thinks. It can absolutely function as a "neutral." I would say the most difficult part of color, is shopping for it, and seeing qualities of a color in a single garment. It's hard to understand the nature of a color, when you don't have other colors similar colors to compare it to. So if you are looking for light blue: is it icy? is it pastel? Is it closer to white or closer to blue? All of those questions can make a difference when pairing a garment with color in your wardrobe and completely understandable that people don't want to add that on, when you have to sift through fit, style, fabric composition to find something to wear. Then it may only be offered in 3 colors. So you just end up buying black, because there is always a black option.

Recently reorganised my shoe storage and just seeing them made me smile. They go with so many outfits & activities. Baby blue flats are definitely the way forwards. For me, blue and purple are neutrals. It always amazes me when people say winters can wear any shade of blush, beige or yellow. They wash me out so badly, but you look great in that yellow dress. If something gives a nice surprise like that, I think it’s a worthy impulse buy because it adds a lot more interest & long-lasting novelty to the wardrobe.

Great video! I love two things you said (phrasing), plus there's a personal takeaway for me to reflect on. First small point, love that you specify that the red shirt is a button-up shirt. So many people now seem to think that a button-down shirt is any shirt with buttons, but it's not! Fussy detail maybe, but I appreciate it. Second: love that you mention the concept of cost per wear! I've long felt that the $25 item which you wear once is expensive, while the $300 item which you wear dozens, or hundreds, of times is not. Finally, your thoughts on impulse purchases had me reflecting that I'm more likely to buy on impulse if the item is deeply discounted. Sometimes these purchases have still served me well, but the price really shouldn't factor in. I love it and it's useful, or I don't and it's not. Thanks again, Alyssa!

Recently I did make an unusual impulse purchase. A friend and I had gone for a drive to one of the little country towns nearby. Mainly for coffee 😊😄 and because she felt she needed to get out. We saw a clothing shop that looked like it had some great pieces. It did. My friend was trying on some outfits. I'd seen a pair of 3/4 summer pants that were not my size, not my colour, not on sale, the only pair left but they really "spoke to me". Ultimately my friend and the assistant suggested I try them on anyway. (As I'm not as big as I think I am!) And so I now have a fabulous pair of trousers. It's autumn now so have had to put them away. But before I did I wore them rather a lot. Getting compliments often 😊 On the flip side some impulse buys a few years ago I recently passed on to friends and in some cases to charity shops. I feel good about really beginning to know when to buy and what. I'd begun this some years ago but an glad I've now found your channel too. Definitely, give it a go. Especially if you dress it down with something unexpected. I remember years ago I was visiting my cousin in Sweden and we went for a walk around her neighbourhood in Stockholm. She wore a pair of voluminous black dress pants with a cute summer top. It was so effortlessly chic. You can also dress it up for evening. I was just thinking of buying a new pair of black dress pants for weekend wear. We've recently moved and I have more use for dressy casual wear. Maybe play around with your wardrobe and see if you have items to wear with the pants to make them weekend appropriate.

I’m an Eileen fisher and Vince kind of girl so finding timeless pieces are very hit and miss. But gosh sometimes I just grab a polyester cutesy summer dress because they are so easy to wear on the go. ❤

Thank you for a great video! I'm watching you in the last 2 or 3 years and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the wonderful content.... I've learned so much and I've taken some of your Mottos and I'm using them in other aspects of my life. Let's just say I sometimes grab my husband in the last 30 years to bed, and tell him 'loving and using what you already have'. So I guess I'm not the only one who's grateful in our family 😅😅😅

That is a hilarious and wonderful application of that phrase! I will be stealing that application for my husband… 😃

Love this topic - always super interesting to hear your perspective and learn from you. Love the idea of mulling over an impulse buy before you purchase it and focussing on fabric feel.

Alyssa, I love your content and you have motivated me to adopt slow fashion in a way that I wouldn’t have been able to do on my own❤️ and even though our body types are completely different, even I get attracted more towards neutrals and resonate with your style. But nowadays I am having trouble minimizing my impulsive purchase for skin and personal care. Any suggestions on how to do the same?

@snehadhar8037 I remember Drew Barrymore did a segment on her show, maybe in 2023. She freely admitted she's a makeup-aholic 😁 She brought tubs of her makeup products from home into the studio, and sorted them on camera. And talked about why she'd bought so much. ➡ So, I think getting everything you have out onto a surface can be a good start. You can sort products into groups - which will instantly show if you're purchasing too many of the same thing. Eg Face Masks, Serums, Lipsticks. You may also be able to let some items go which aren't 'best of category' or your favorite. (Either donate to a friend, or use up the product on your hands/elbows/legs/arms etc.) ➡ When I had a break between jobs some years ago, and I was home more, I counted that I had 35 face washes and cleansers in the cupboard and on the bathroom counter. I was quite surprised!! But realised that I purchased a new version nearly every time I shopped. So I just stopped for awhile. Understanding that I used these products at a much slower rate than I was buying them. I also realised that my skin had changed with age, and some of the cleansers were too harsh now. I donated the unopened packs, and binned the half-used. ➡ Lastly, Alyssa talked in her video here about looking deeper into our habits of Impulse Purchase. What's going on at the point we buy? Are we online? Is it a little 'me time' away from the kids. Are we buying for our Fantasy Selves? and more. Good luck 😀

@@comealongcomealong4480 Thanks a lot!! ❤️ This helps. I will implement above suggestions this weekend and will have to probably check the expiry dates as well 🫣

@@snehadhar8037 I think you'll feel happier about your beauty purchases and use more of them when you know your inventory 😊 I wanted to reach out to you because when I told my sister about the 35 face washes I'd counted, she made exasperated disapproving noises on the phone. She didn't understand what I was trying to express - just judged me for being a useless spender 😳 Have a great weekend!

I bought this impulsively…after thinking about it for 24 hours and doing a cost per wear analysis. 😂😂
