I’ve found that it depends on the plant/size/potting medium. For my big plants, moisture meter all the way. In my smaller, well draining pots/mixes, I use my finger or just gauge the weight of the pot because the amendments make it hard for the meter to give an accurate reading.

I don't agree the finger is better because it can't get down far enough in the pot. Many plants are dry at the top and wet at the bottom. Great way to overwater plants. The thing with meters is you are not supposed to let it hit the bottom of the pot.

My mom's peace lily that she's had for 20 years was almost dead in her apartment, so I got her one of the ring lights and it worked perfectly. She was so happy! They definitely have their uses.

100000% agree on the fertilizer point. i had the same realization recently. i used to always self-mix my fertilizer. honestly, it took so much time out of my day and it was so messy. of course it's cool to have fertilizer to address specific issues in plants (like iron deficiency) but if your plant is healthy it literally doesn't matter. due to time issues, i switched to the cheapest slow release fertilizer i could find and lo and behold- my plants grow just as well and i saved a hell of a lot of money and time.

I agree about those coco coir poles. I have only been a plant parent since the pandemic began. I dislike them also. I gave mine away. I use moisture meter but I never thought to leave it in my plant because it’s not made of something a plant would have in it in the wild like soil, rock or wood. My finger doesn’t work. The chopstick sound good though. As far as anything else used on my plants there is no one best thing. Who would believe any claims. It’s all hype. Fertilizer, self watering bulbs, leaf shine spray, pesticide. I diy a lot of this. I think that people are too competitive about growing plants big so they fall for any hype that feeds the desire for the best. I just want healthy plants. I just want to enjoy their beauty. I don’t care about how big they get or how shiny they are. I have learned to only get plants that can survive the humidity, and lighting in my home. But I guess I’m just an amateur but I love my plants.

I love my plant buffing/shining gloves. I think their very useful and fairly inexpensive. I could use a cloth but then I find it gets used for other things in the house. With the gloves, it’s just for the plants.

Some have stems that are a bit too wide and do cause the water to come out too quickly, but they do work. The key is to have them go into the substrate slightly tilted and make sure that the substrate is filling the bottom of the stem. This slows it down to a drip. I use them for my moss poles sometimes but I don’t find them helpful for extended/vacation plant watering.

I’ve never had a cutting fail in stratum. Trick is to use a 2 cup system. One with a small hole in the cup bottom and the other to catch the water runoff. Empty the water out of the catch cup and water the inner cup with the hole as soon as you see the stratum dry out. It will turn a dull black color then you know it’s time to water. I hope I explained this well.

One thing about the halo lights, I am using one on a trailing plant (pothos) that I have up high, on top of a credenza. The top of the vines would not receive much light otherwise, but the length of the vine is next to a north facing window, so I think it's very useful for this specific situation. A lot of the grow lights you get online (amazon) are super overpriced, especially a few years back, but the ones I got were only $8 so I am a fan of them.

I find moiture meters to be really helpful. U just grab this thing in one hand and a watering can in the other ang go thru your plants. Stick it in a couple of times - if reads dry, go full watering, if it reads medium dry u just water a plant less and so on. It doesn't work on plants that is in a perlite heavy soil or a pon, in this case you just feel how light a pot is. Useful tool for me as I am not a fan of sticking fingers in soil. Especially if you have several big plants in deep pots. Oh also it is useful if u ask a non-planty person to water your plants when you are away Watering globes tho are a complete flop🥴

I love my plant app. It keeps me up to date on who might need water. But I decide if it does or doesn’t if not then I can snooze (2-3days) or hold until the next scheduled watering. But it doesn’t tell me other weird things to do to the plant. I willingly pay for it. Planta

@@PlantyMarishka Same. I use semi-hydro with a reservoir and wick with 95%+ of my plants. I have it set to remind me every two weeks to water a plant (most plants last 2 weeks). I never have to check anything or do rounds, but I still do sometimes. It's so foolproof and fast. I would def forget plants too.

The terra-cotta self watering spikes do work, I’ve used them for a 14 days trip and my plants survived 👍. I recommend using larger bottles, like wine bottles, that way they hold more water. I’ve used the bulb ones like you had mentioned too. No good 👎.

The Terra cotta spikes I use in my moss poles! I embed it into the center of the moss at the top of the pole, then I invert a repurposed water bottle with rain water in it into the spike and the moss wicks the water through the terra cotta slowly as it dries. Works great imho using them that way 😅

personally I can not survive without a plant app... i use planta but i only use the watering feature which i do not stick to but use to a guide... it really helps me remember plants that I have.... also i didnt know fluval stratum was being used for houseplants it is aquasoil for aquariums

I totally understand that coir poles don't have the benefits of other poles, yes. absolutely. I used it because I don't have the capacity to make and maintain other poles, and because my plants connect to the pole... just short aerial roots on the surface of the pole, not creating tons of juicy aerial roots or secondary roots.. and because they're sturdier than simple poles like bamboo. My plants do size up, probably not at the rate they would with moss, but they do size up. I will say my monstera's roots actually dig into the pole, but I think that's more a comment on the tenacity of Monstera rather than the efficacy of the coir pole. Again, totally agree that the benefits do not compare to moss, but for my lazy ass it's a step up from Bamboo and that's what I have the capacity for. PS I just read another comment about humidity and coir poles.. My house does stay at 60% ish naturally, not sure if that's part of why I have some success with them.

I agree with everything you said. about fertilizers, I believe for someone like me who uses a very chunky aroid mix which contains no worm casting, potting soil, garden soil and even peat moss, a lot of regular fertilizers don't really work that well. a lot of fertilizers are made so that the bacteria inside our soil change it to the form that is absorbable for plants. but there is not much of that bacterias in the soil mixes I use. so fertilizers specifically made for hydroponics work much better for my plants. any potting medium that contains commercial soil mixes or worm casting or even high amounts of peat moss cause fungus knots. also in order to keep my moss poles really moist I have to water my poles every sigle day which makes my soil moist too. so I really have to use very very chunky soils and hydroponic fertilizers work the best for such soilless soil mixes in my experience

I use a plant app as basically a task manager, I have an awful memory so it useful to know things like when I watered a plant last or when I fertilized. Then I use the "to do" list to let me know to CHECK if the plant needs to be watered. I just ignore ALL of the "advise" the app gives out because its useless. I actually started building an app just for myself to accomplish the task management side of that because there are things I could see that could be improved, but thats a lot of work and im lazy.

As far as watering globes. Another KZbinr uses these, but with both ends open. She has a lot of moss poles and uses the globes to water her moss poles. She up ends it and pushes it into a channel that’s been made from previous waterings. But it works great on her moss poles. You just pull it out when the water reaches the last leaf/branch you stop watering so you avoid watering the soil unless you need it.

I do this with my moss poles also. It works only when my sphagnum moss is tight. I don’t think they work for aerated soil, but great for outdoor plants put in potting soil only that is packed tighter.

I am not a fan of ANY pole ( stripper included 😉😂😂) so my plants grow however they grow.. I actually planted a philo bipennifolium in with my monstera and they help support each other. But now that I have a kitten I may be getting rid of them (toxic and my last kitty died from eating oxalis and developed kidney issues 😢) Thanks for making us think about what we NEED to have to grow plants. Really enjoyed this video, I look after the plants where I work and we used to use an oil based ( mostly natural ) skin cleanser as a leaf shine/ cleaner and sometimes still do on occasion. The leaves don’t get sticky with it and some plants seem to really like it. Also, I saw that @sheffieldmadeplants channel did a useful video recently talking about the terracotta watering funnel things, definitely something I would give a go after watching that video as it’s based on watering systems used in the outdoors too ☺️

Good video! I have one coir pole that a manjula is climbing and I don’t water it any differently. Man those roots have latched on to that thing. But that’s the only one I have. The plant is outside in beach weather so the humidity is like 1000% so that may be what helped. Could not agree more about the fluval. I could have burned my money and got more enjoyment. It literally killed everything I put in it. I’ve gotten much more use out of rediscovering perlite propagation as I have saved so many rare and expensive plants that were on the very brink of death including my Monster Albos, Thais and Aurea. I have literally a 99% success rate with perlite propagation. I have several corms in it now, the first I’ve ever rooted, so we’ll see!

Also wanted to mention that safer brand insecticidal soap with give you the most beautiful leaves. Diluted down from concentrate form and wiped off with a towel will make your leaves gleam. It smells good, is cheap and has more than one use of course. I highly recommend cleaning leaves with it.

I’ve found the moisture meters only really work with regular potting soil. If you have chunky aroid mix, it just can’t measure for shit. 😂 I returned mine because I have almost nothing in straight soil.

I think the coco poles have their uses, but they can’t be used as live-moss poles. They are merely a support and I use one for my thai for instance, because it doesn’t need a live-moss pole to size up its leaves. I put a golden dragon on a coco pole and it did size up, but not as fast as with moss poles 🙂 Those watering globes with terracotta on the end are great! I poke them in the top of moss poles and fill them when the moss needs watering. I only use fluval stratum for alocasia corms and I see much more secondary/bushy roots in stratum, but I don’t see it as a must. stratum is kind of expensive where I live too…

I just use bamboo sticks to support my plants that needs it so they don’t flop over. I never liked moss poles i find them not aesthetic pleasing for look wise same with trellis. Water meter they never work properly. Fertiliser i have different ones for each plants in my collection. I have one for cacti and succulents which also can use for Hoyas aswell they are kinda like succulent plants. Orchid mist and fertiliser is also good for Hoyas aswell. And the rest of my plants i just use normal indoor house plant fertiliser. And you only need to do once a month in the growing seasons. I find the machine for sucking pests in your home is great for fungus gnats. I am tired of using the sticky traps and is a waste in buying them. Waste of money and doesnt look great displayed seeing the nasty pests stuck to it. And end up changing it out once a week.

Mineral oil means literally just one thing, and that is Paraffinium Liquidium. Practically the same stuff as vaseline or paraffin candle but a liquid instead of a gel or wax. It's a side product of petrochemistry. That means things like gasoline and plastics. "Mineral" in its name doesn't mean any fancy thing, that's just the name of the substance due to it's origin. Mineral oil is most definitely in all your cosmetics unless you use brands with certified lables like USDA, ECOCERT or Cosmos Natural which prohibit paraffins. It's a very pure and neutral oil and doesn't do rancid near as fast as plant oils do, which is why it's used so widely. On the other hand, it has practically zero benefits in skincare for example, other than forming a layer on skin or any other surface that seals moisture in the skin or out from a wooden kitchen utencil. It's also very cheap bacause it would otherwise be a waste product from the much larger scale high benefit gas production for example. Oils going rancid is likely what causes sticky residue on leaves after pest treatmets or polishes, but that might as well be any soap based product just being sticky by default.

Thank you so much for the fertilizer commentary cause so completely agree when it comes to Liqui-Dirt and Super Thrive. I saw no difference than using my favorite fertilizer. I used Liqui-Dirt for 2 years with high expectations and was underwhelmed. before that I tried Fish Emulsion and other “ocean” based fertilizers and was also underwhelmed. I was I’ll stick to my tried and true favorite fertilizer of all time Jack’s Claasic and all 93 of my plants are thriving. Also agree with you on the coir poles and plant apps…basically I agree with your entire post…lol. Love your channel and a huge fan. ❤❤❤❤❤

the watering globe can work if you have dense enough soil, which is not really something to aim for. In my old house I had a few big ficus benjamini plants where I would use a upside down wine or beer bottle and that did not just run out. but the pot was quite dense and full of root,s and it actually was hard to get the bottle in at all. But I agree that it´s not really a good solution, also a lot of people don´t realize that it´s for vacation and nothing to use constantly (if it even works with their soil).

About hygrometer. With finger method i often thought my plants have enough moisture but when my calathea and maranta started dying and i was loosing lower leaves of my philodendrons i started using moisture meter. With one prong only. Oh what a difference it made. Now o have lush and beautiful calatheas and almost never loose power philo leaves. Also: try sticking your finger into a deeper pot like a 40-50 cm diameter monstera pot. :P

I have one of those halo lights, and I have it on my bedside table with a silver sword underneath it. Im using the stake as support, but ya, my silver sword has quickly grown to the top of its extension, the leaves have not sized up at all. It's also a little top heavy, so its not really a great support lol. Not worth it. It came in a four pack and I gave the rest away. Also I have coir pole for a couple of my monstera deliciosa. I do find the that aerial roots go into it sometimes, but they grow right through the edge of it. also getting it damp, impossible!!!

I personally love stratum and prefer it to other medium for rooting/propping. I dont find it expensive when used mixed with perlite and use a leca reservoir(which also helps avoid drying out too fast). Disadvantage is that it's not reusable(i recycle by mixing in with soil)and not a permanent substrate

The coco coir poles were the first I used also and I wish I knew how useless they were. Same with those moss poles where the moss is just wrapped around a pole with twine. You can’t really water them, they have to be misted or sprayed with a hose or in the shower and the roots can’t really grow into them.

I use a plant app mostly for the information, like what is the best lighting for a particular plant, what is a good soil to use, etc. And the one I use has the option to ask botanists questions if you are having an issue and send photos of your plant. But not any of those crazy 5 minute hack things, like water your plants with milk! 🤣

I had the same experience with pure stratum, or even majority stratum: dries way too fast and the plant poofs. I only add it like a supplemenet, almost like adding osmocote, to a primary perlite/leca/pon mix. Do I need it/does it make a big difference that way? No clue, maybe? But I gotta use the rest of the bag and I'm not using it straight.

I use a plant app and let me explain why. I am a very forgetful person with a tendency to overwater, so the plant app helps me to not overwater and also not forget to water. I don't use the premium version of the app that I use, I just use it to remember to water my plants. And, it lets you snooze notifications for two day increments if the plant does not need water when it says to water it.

The person who suggested rooting powder just needed to be more specific. So they mean using a rooting hormone or just the powder? Eg: the powder contains less rooting hormone than something like clonex, but we know that rooting hormones are a thing that works.

Those moisture meters are crap. And I wish i had the energy to maintain any kind of moss pole. I can't keep up with keeping them moist. Most of my climbers don't really care, they are fine with bamboo sticks, but i definitley have some that would size up better with a moss pole.

To be honest I don't have moss poles on anything unless it's in a greenhouse because I can freely spray. I used to do the moss pole thing for plants outside a greenhouse and I could just not be bothered with keeping them damp. I also have a florida green that's barely getting supported by a bamboo stick and it's growing so large and vigorously. I think everyone should just use whatever works within their lifestyle. Plenty of people can grow beautiful plants without any moss poles!

The bulbs are stupid. I put my ferns on Blumat spikes and they work perfectly. I've had a maiden hair fern in a clay pot for 3 years. 3 Boston ferns, Indian holly fern all beautiful using these. Trying it on a false aralia and stromanthe to see if it keeps the leaf tips from getting crunchy. 1 month in and all is well.

Totally agree! They worked totally fine with my outdoor plants that had little to no amendments, but it was terrible for any of my indoor plants!

Moisture meter is the plant life saver to me. My plants are still alive when I discovered and have been using it coz before I killed all my plants without it. Guess it all depends

I hate trellises in the shape of something complex, like other than a circle or heart. You know, like intricate shapes. Bc the plant is going to grow over a small, intricately shaped trellis and it will never grow in that shape, like a snake trellis. I hope i am explaining it in a way you can undrrstand.

I LOVE tree fern fibre! It has been so amazing in getting stubborn plants to root, as well as acclimatizing too. I also like that it falls apart easier than something like sphagnum moss, which makes it the ideal substrate for poles. It is expensive which is why I primary use it for my poles rather than a potting medium, but you can make it stretch pretty far if you add perlite or soil to it.

I cant go without my moisture meter. Evenvpros use them. Maybe yours wasnt accurate because you left it in the soil? You do have to care of the electrode thingy! It must be 5 Min Crafys that does the apps. Their solution to problems are rediculous!

Fetrilizers are Definitely not the same. Try using organic fetilizer in semi-hydro i dare you :P Also there are fatrilizers that i could get many reverted plants like scrambled eggs for example into a nice variegated form again. Once you get deeper into fertilizers used by weed growers and not those commony known and used for plants only, you will see a difference.

The one I’m wondering about is seaweed extract. I guess there’s some amount of kelp in the Super Thrive but you can buy seaweed extract on its own and it’s supposed to be amazing for growth…? Or how about macorrhizae (I’m guessing that one is actually good), or charcoal.

I can help with this! Seaweed extract, worm castingas etc is great, but it's a soil conditioner, not a fertiliser. You do, realistically need both - the conditioner feeds your bacterial system in the soil, and makes that system better at taking up the fertiliser. It makes it bioavailable, like taking vitamin C with iron for a human.

Also, it helps the soil and plants from environment like heat and coldness and plant shock with transplant/repot and also for soil being too compact. Basically I noticed that soil looks healthier with it, and with healthier soil then the healthier happier plant. Use fertilizer still for plant nutrients

I use the coco Poles because things on moss poles Rot on me 😭😭😭 I wish I could do regular moss poles but roots do not grow on my coco poles and I hate it
