I was a hardcore believer in the LOC LCO method but I excluded oils from a twist out I did a few months ago and I loved the results. I'd alternate between the LOC LCO method and not adding oils when doing my twist outs to see what works best for me and my hair... lately I cleanse my hair, condition and deep condition my hair, once that's done I then use a leave in and go to either a cream/butter or gel to styler.. the only time I use oils now is when I'm taking down my twists or breaking the gel cast after doing a wash-n-go (which I haven't mastered as of yet, but practice is key)... I do pre-poo my hair before cleansing and I use a mixture of leave in condition, aloe vera juice and then coconut oil with water to add moisture before cleansing and this works for me. p.s. I weighed the pros and cons for co-washing and rather than shampooing I co-washed this weekend and followed through with conditioning and deep conditioning before styling and my hair felt amazing... thanks for the advice :-)

I do think that's a contributer but it doesn't mean that too many oils also weren't an issue. I only use shampoos to cleanse and my hair still doesn't like heavy oil and butter based products. During the week, between washes, it's obvious when a product was too buttery/oily and not hydrating enough because a few days in it will feel drier, frizzier and greasier than my usual juicy, fluffy, shiny hair.

Sans Nom I kind of have a stash so I rotate my products, and I mostly buy from small businesses online rather than grabbing stuff on the ground from big box stores. I wash my hair weekly, and shampoo and deep condition every week. With all that said, my favorite cleansers are by Product Junkie Naturals. The hibiscus whipped shampoo, curl clarity shampoo, and rice water activated cleanser are probably my top three. They all do a great job cleansing my hair, but I can also detangle with them, they rinse out cleanly (no oil or residue left behind) and they also leave my hair really hydrated and plump. I have gone through many bottles of the curl clarity especially, and have a liter size. It's my #1 cleanser. Though honestly, they are super slow to ship products out and can be slow to respond via email too. Because I always have other products on hand, their products work so well for me, and because they have great sales it's worth it for me to repurchase, but I do hesitate to recommend them sometimes because they clearly don't have a team big enough for the traffic they get for their sales. I think It's usually just the founder doing everything which can be frustrating for anyone, but especially if you're not used to ordering online and waiting awhile. Another line I love for cleansers is Novaa Naturals. The papaya hydrating collection is my favorite way to gently clarify my hair while keeping it hydrated, and while I can't detangle with it (it's not as slippery as other favorite shampoos) it stays in my shower just in case another shampoo I try just doesn't cut it or I need more clean. The Drip n Curls ultimate moisture shampoo by Novaa Naturals is amazing, too. I can detangle with it, leaves my hair hydrated, moisturized and clean, it smells good etc. It checks all my boxes. I love it. It doesn't last me as long as the papaya hydrating one but they also have great sales so it's more than worth it. If you like to buy things in person, the Miche Beauty cleansed shampoo might work for you. I've only tried it once so I can't say it's a staple, but it did have a nice rich lather that I could mostly detangle with, left my hair nice and clean without being too dry and a little went a long way. I have a 2 oz sample bottle and probably have another 3 uses, it also smells good. For deep conditioners, I also love product junkie naturals and Novaa Naturals. Probably my top 2 again. I also have been loving She Scent It deep conditioners but they're newer to me. For something on the ground, I like Obia Naturals deep conditioners. They aren't "I can't be without them" level, but whenever I do buy them they work consistently and penetrate well. For leave ins I again love the brands I've already mentioned: the snap back curls and maximum moisture leave ins by Product Junkie Naturals, the Drip n Curls leave in by Novaa Naturals, and this is where Obia Naturals really shines to me: the curl moisture cream is amazing, the sweet almond heavy cream and twist whip butter are all incredible leave-in/cream stylers that are rich and super moisturizing but also pH balanced and penetrates my low porosity hair like a dream. Obia naturals can be found at Target, but they have great sales on their own site so I always stock up then. I've also been loving the Melanin Haircare leave-in. I'm mostly a wash n go person so I have a couple of holy grail gels, and a number of cream stylers and some other stuff, but I think those are the core products. I hope that helps.
@linzeeb44 жыл бұрын
@@rses916 oh also! I know I mentioned that I only shampoo, but I think it's worth saying that finding shampoos (and all products) that worked for me took a lot of trial and error, time and ingredient checking. But having clean hair allows me to have hydrated hair and that's made a huge difference. Also deep conditioning every wash is a must for me, I recently got a heated deep conditioning cap from Pydana that helps with penetration. Good luck!

There are so many different types of oils though and should not all be classed together. There are some oils that can penetrate your strands, (these are good for low porosity hair) such as olive oil and grapeseed oil, often I use it after my leave in and I rinse off the EXCESS that hasn't entered by strands, you can tell because you shouldn't get that greasy feeling. Heavier oils like coconut oil will just sit on top of the hair because the molecules are too big..I stay away from them especially for my low porosity hair. I took out oils from my routine for some months and my hair suffered. You just need to know what you're doing and know your hair when using oils otherwise it can lead to breakage. AND you MUST shampoo if using oils as THAT will lead to product build up x

I get that oils lock moisture out as well as in, but isn't that a good thing? Like if you moisturise your hair with a leave in and then seal it in with an oil, isn't it good that no more moisture can penetrate your strands (i.e. in humid conditions) which can leave it looking frizzy also?
@eduardaarrais4 жыл бұрын
It is actually a good thing and people do recommend using a oil to seal all that moisture in after your leave in. They lock the moisture like silicones do, so you don't really need to apply a hair oil serum with silicones in it (store bought oils usually have silicones, but some brands don't have them - which is great!). I do recommend a hair oil serum that you bough on a store instead of the pure oil itself. Just pure oil will attract dirt to your hair and store bought won't (because they've certain ingredients that will stop that from happening - at least that's what I've heard)

Karabo Machokoto for scalp issues, I would think oil can be helpful... in the video I was more referring to using oil in your actual hair. but for scalp, I would think oil would be just fine!

All the other oils you mentioned did not really work with me and the coconut oil actaully destroyed my hair. The only oil I use ricinus oil and it is really good.

my hair is going thru a phase where it doesn't like natural oils. I do not use them either. Right now, my hair frizzes when I apply oils to it. I think the frizz might be due to protein sensitivity. I can use silicones without any issues. And I wash my hair weekly. What I do instead is use a DIY flaxseed gel, marshmallow root and slippery elm and that combination adds shine and keeps my hair moisturized.

Dear Alyssa, I have watched so many of your videos, I didn't want to judge you prematurely or too harshly but this is harmful. It's not just "unpopular opinions" You are not a tricologist, scientist or hair professional and it is irresponsible of you to use your platform in this way. Our scalp produces oil which travels down our hair. Oils are not bad for our hair, we just need to know our porosity, strand size, amount of damage, whether we are protein sensitive etc. Also oils only contain silicone if they are man made or mixed with man made products. Please, if you want to be an influencer, do a course, invest in your brand and your knowledge because people look to you for guidance, you should be using your platform responsibly. I hope that you will take this message in the spirit it is intended. You want to increase your platform via Sephora, please share accurate information. I want to root for you as a young black woman, building her brand and following. Wishing you the best. K

I agree she seems very misinformed because as far as i know oils dont just coat your hair. A lot of oils are light and are able to penetrate the hair, you can also re moisturize with them. And just by her mentioning oils with silicone or spray oils i know shes a product natural 😂 like there's natural oils you can get that are not manufactured buy a natural hair company you know like pure oils. Its just a matter of finding one compatible with your hair type.🤦🏾♀️ i feel like she shouldn't have said oils in general as a broad term or made it clear they type of oils she used in her experience.

hi kayleigh - thanks for this. I've NEVER claimed to be a triocologist or scientist, nor do I want to be one! I'm just sharing my personal GENUINE experience with oils and MY hair.

Kayleigh B trying to figure out where she said she was ever a trichologist in her videos? The title says “opinion” meaning this is based on her views not yours. Obviously what works for her hair may not necessarily work on yours or others and you’d be pretty daft if you thought it did. She’s not forcing you or anyone to follow what she does. You talked about not wanting to judge but your comment definitely does seem a bit judgy. Wishing you the best tho
@kayleigh51004 жыл бұрын
@@TheFilthySick If you have a look through the comments you will see plenty of naturals following Alyssa's opinion. This could to be to their detriment because they haven't been presented with the full picture, as I said it's not only this video I am referring to. Many KZbin influencers aren't hair care professionals but they do their research and present a more holistic view so that their subscribers can be truly better informed and make informed decisions. Only point I was making sis.

@@AlyssaMarieXo Hi Alyssa, thank you for taking the time to respond. I was not suggesting that you become a tricologist or similar. Our experiences shape us and can be helpful for others. I just think your success with your hair comes from genes, your routine, even simple things like the water hardness where we live all has an impact. As I said I hope that you do well, your hair texture is very similar to mine which is what drew me to your channel in the first place. I just think that as you grow your platform you are a bit more mindful as to your audience and the power of your views in your videos

Yeah same. I don't use silicone in any of my products and I only use lightweight stand alone oils when I want to scrunch out the cast of a heavy gel. I shampoo my hair every week (I have a variety of clarifying, hydrating, and emollient shampoos that I can even detangle with) and really focus on hydrating, penetrating products. I made these changes over the course of a couple of years a while back, and since then my hair has flourished. There are enough oils formulated in products that I don't need to add extra, and my low porosity hair does a fine job sealing itself. I think many people conflate oil with moisture without really understanding the role of hydration, emollience and occlusives and balancing what their own hair likes. I also am wary of heavy, buttery products, but it took a lot of trial and error to get there. I'm glad to see you put this out there so that people realize it's an option for them that they may want to try.

I rarely use oils on my hair. I find most of them to be too thick. I do like Melanin Hair Care's oil blend though. It's super light weight, though I still don't seem to use a lot of it. If I use something that makes my hair crunchy I'll use oil only to break the cast. My hair products have oils in them no doubt, but I don't use oil as a part of my hair care routine (ex: LOC method).
@sonsofelshamy39873 жыл бұрын
That doesn't make sense. If the oil seals your hair, and your hair gets dry... then that means the seal has been broken which means that moisture can come back in again

For me it's great to wash my hair and use conditioner. After that I use Leave in conditioner and than I use a little bit of oil like amla and caster. After that I use Shea and mango butter and I braid it in cornrows for 2 weeks and than I repeat. I have to because I'm Muslim so I wet my hair 5 times a day. Like this my hair keeps soft and growing
@sarahm18944 жыл бұрын
I agree with the oil!!! I have friends who complain of dry hair but yet put tons of oil on their scalp to help with moisturizing!!! oil is not a moisturizer! It can lock moisture in but you are right, you would not be able to add any the next days when refreshing. I am still trying to convince them to add real moisture such as water or better yet leave in conditioner to add moisture. not oil but alas, they are still doing it... lol.

not all oils seal tho there are some that penetrate into the hair shaft instead of stittin ontop of the strand and sealing and with oils that _are_ sealing you need to clarify your hair. regardless shes so pretty and has beautiful hair

I use tea tree oil coconut oil Jamaican oil oil sheen eco gel I spray water on my hair am I doing the right thing
@zariahbrown43643 жыл бұрын
I know the video is aimed at why we shouldn’t use oils, but I believe the overall message is just don’t use them as often. Coconut oil, Jamaican black castor oil, and oil sheen spray are bad for your hair. Castor oil contributes to matted and tangled hair...tea tree oil is an irritant and can cause irritation such as itching...coconut oil and olive oil are comedogenic, so they can clog your pores and contribute to build up. Eco gel causes a lot of build up too. Instead, I recommend using tea jojoba oil, almond oil, and grapeseed oil. You can mix those into a butter or cream or grease based product. I don’t recommend ever applying them by themself or directly to your scalp without them being mixed into something or at all because your scalp produces sebum and applying oil will cause build up (unless you are doing a hot oil treatment, it’s fine then). Wetline Xtreme gel is a good replacement for eco gel and if you’re looking for a hard gel edge booster is decent (it’s one of the few that doesn’t contain DMDH Hydantion and linalool).
