Yeah, that really confused and upset me. Cats are SO destructive and people let them outside all the time?? They're constantly killing small animals... I had a rottweiler when I was a child too, and he was such a sweetie ❤️ Meanwhile every person I've ever known with a cat has basically been like "Oh no, they've killed another bird/mouse" 🙄 and then been like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ O well lol. Yeah, I've had to start spraying the neighborhood cats with water, and planted herbs that repel them around my yard. The people who 'take care' (there is no care to be had from them) of the cats don't seem to notice they are all sickly, flea and tick covered, are wreaking havoc on the wildlife, even spreading these invasive plants when they lick the seeds off their fur. Just sad to see, try to point it out, but willful ignorance is guaranteed bliss, I guess.

Studies have shown that teenagers have a shifted sleep schedule, and biologically are inclined to go to sleep late and night and wake up later in the morning. Lots of schools in Canada have shifted to later start times because of this - I think that's what Ben was thinking of when he was talking about teens needing more sleep.
@kpwxx
@kpwxx Жыл бұрын
Yes, this! The earlier start time of schools is for the benefit of adults working there and parents/carers who have to go to work, it's definitely not the optimal time for teens, health or learning wise.

I thought of that too. As a person who has had a shifted sleep schedule since I was a teenager, I don't feel that the 8am start vs 11am start is only relative. I'm not a slow starter, I am the most productive around 10 or 11 regardless of when I wake up.

BEN both of your cats are literally capable of killing enough smaller animals that they'd be a microcosm of an ecological disaster if you routinely let them outside. Any dog over 20-30 lb could kill a small baby if it really wanted to. Heck, honestly a cat could potentially kill a small baby if it really wanted to. We have domesticated carnivores living in our homes, to say they aren't safe if they ever act like carnivores is to say all pets are unsafe.

To be fair as a professional pet sitter, I've been bitten by far more small dogs than I have big. Also cat bites and scratches get way worse infections than dog bites. So reality wise, cats are probably one of the biggest threats to your naked self... But since they're your family it's okay. I find most people don't mind a level of casualness with their family.

Being an introvert is separate from having social anxiety, being overly shy, not having social skills, etc - there are tons of introverts who are charismatic and confident and present as extroverts. There's overlap between being an introvert and social anxiety/shyness/awkwardness, but at its core being an introvert just means needing alone time to recharge. It's a neutral trait that always gets associated with "negative" ones.

Pity breeds were bread to have more physically dominant traits, however that has nothing to do with their personalities. Pity breeds are one of the most loving and gentile breeds. They are sweet and caring. Just having dominant physical traits means nothing. What really matters is personality. The QR menu thing -- I think it's nice to have it available in QR but they should also have physical copies. That's what I was thinking too! Accessibility is big, it's always good to have a physical copy of the menu on hand because there's so many situations to take into account. A recent favorite breakfast joint of mine went back to physical menus and I was so happy because it always took me years to get their menu to open.

Happy taco tuesday! I think there is a huge problem in regards to pet owners being held responsible in training their pets and being educated owners. It's less of the dogs being dangerous and more of the pet owners being uninformed/under prepared/uneducated on what it takes to be a dog owner and how to train them for not only people's safety but also the dog and other animals that are around them. Not to mention that many larger "aggressive" dog breeds are more likely to be used/abused and have trauma/behavioral issues that further contribute to harmful stereotypes placed on them because of their breed.

there needs to be more responsibility placed on back yard breeders. And all around more education. When people say it's not the breed it's the owner they're wrong. Some breeds are more likely to have SSA, dog aggression, people aggression, a higher prey drive, etc. Educate yourself when picking a Breed and buy responsibly.

@MrsPokits TheRiot Yes as someone else mentioned in another comment on this video, some breeds/size are more likely, but there are a multitude of factors that go into the likelihood of a dog attacking someone. Not just breed but also age, fear level, sex, size, and owner experience etc. Either way the majority of owners do not attend even 1 training session with their dogs to work on their behaviors and insecurities. No matter the size, breed or sex dogs can be trained to help ensure their safety and the others around them. Backyard breeders are another major issue.
@mrspokitstheriot477
@mrspokitstheriot477 Жыл бұрын
@@julia8523 I'm just pointing out Breed does play an issue. The biggest issue is puppy mills and backyard breeders, and people not educating themselves when picking a breed. Because so many people say it's not the breed it's the owner, well intentioned pet owners pick whatever breed they like the look of and then are all shocked when they're animal with an incredibly high prey drive that gets no stimulation kills their chickens. Most issues can be fixed with ethical breeding, education, and managing one's expectations. The biggest issue with pits attack records is it's like 10-20 breeds commonly called pits that are not in fact a pitbull. Even my Rhodesian was commonly mislabeled as a pit.

Only in more recent decades were they bred to fight and became associated with that, but most of the pit bulls you adopt or buy from breeders were not bred for fighting, and are incredibly sweet and gentle My family's dog was a pit mix, she is rambunctious and loud and plays rough, until she's with a child, she is very very quiet and soft and makes herself smaller and is just incredibly sweet. I'm sure not many people will see this since it's hours after the release of the video, but I just had to comment I can't disagree more with what Ben said about dogs like Rottweilers and pitbulls. Many of those breeds weren't bred to be 'monsters' at all - Rottweilers for example were bred to be strong to pull carts. There are so many smaller dogs who have also been bred to have a 'killer instinct' (really don't like that term, prefer to say prey drive) that leads to a lot of behavior problems too, but people overlook the damage done because they're small and 'harmless'. This aggressive behavior more often than not results from people putting them in illegal fighting rings, abusing them, or failing to socialize and exercise their dogs appropriately. I volunteer at a shelter to help the vets medicate animals, and most of the dogs I treat there are large, working/bully breeds who have come from the *worst* situations, but despite that, I have genuinely only encountered maybe one or two animals who I felt uncomfortable treating in my entire time volunteering. By and large, they are so enthusiastic and full of love; when I have gotten pushed around it's because they're so excited to see someone, and they're coming up to lick my face while I'm kneeling, jumping to greet me when I come into their kennel, or wagging their tails so hard they wiggle and bump into me. Many can be really gentle too, just quietly coming up to greet and get pets. They would make fantastic family pets to a responsible pet owner with the resources to give them a good life and socialize them. So yes, you should have the proper respect for a big dog, just like you would for any other animal or person, but saying that being vulnerable around them is inherently dangerous is just so ill-founded. This is filmed live, so it's 100% understandable to have bad takes from time to time. We're all human, and I love that they have honest conversations about their opinions. I just hope that maybe they might see the comments like this from people with more experience and be open to dismantling the stigma around certain breeds. I see so many sweet, gentle, and misunderstood dogs suffer because of snap-judgments based on their appearance and breed. Sorry for the novel lol.

This is a fantastic response. I have a rottie mix pup, usually pretty steady around 80 lbs. - people see him, judge him immediately and think he’s so scary and will attack. The worst thing he’s going to do is bark (because that’s part of what rotties do as a breed). He is truly one of the sweetest, most gentle dogs I’ve ever met. He’s just a big baby who is unaware of his size and wants to be loved! I’d trust him with my life

It is, but it shouldn't. We shouldn't own animals that can kill people. It's the same as owning a tiger. "Oh but mine is sweet and never hurt me" yeah, but when they do you could literally die.

@@erikperhs_ to say we shouldn't own animals that can kill us is going to be putting most breeds of dogs off the table as pets, many of them (especially bigger breeds) are plenty capable and will have the potential for it without proper training. The reality is that dogs at this point have been bred along side us to do jobs. The problem is not many people exercise or challenge the brains of their working dogs and instead they live in kennels or backyards all day with little to no stimulation and fulfillment. Breeds like border collies or huskies may not kill someone but they will tear things apart to let out the energy, and german shepards or belgian malinois can have pretty bad aggression when not getting the training they need. All of this to say that there are very few dogs we should have as pets with this mindset. And that's also humoring the argument seeing as tigers aren't domesticated and pittys are.
@erikperhs_
@erikperhs_ Жыл бұрын
@@proxymoxie7882 Nothing you said changes the fact that the probability of a pitbull or a rottweiler killing you is WAY higher than other breeds like huskies or border collies doing it. The risk IS higher, so why take it? No one here is saying we should kill all pitbulls, just that we shouldn't actively make more of them. Of course, give homes to those who already exist, but let them die out eventually. It would be better for everyone and it wouldn't harm no one. Most people that I know that own pitbulls only do it as a show of force. It's usually macho guys who want everyone to know how badass they are. Same goes for pugs, because those things are struggling to live and people keep making them because they're cute. A pet is supposed to keep you company, you don't need it to be so strong and dangerous.
@proxymoxie7882
@proxymoxie7882 Жыл бұрын
@erikperhs3271 Because the qualites of the breed are what you are looking for. It's that simple. I never spoke to killing them, you're the one bringing it up. But simply put you're wrong, there is no need to let the breed die out. Pitties have been domesticated for some time now and as with any other breed have specific needs. All dogs are bred to work, not to be pets. It's a fact. Some will fare better as a pet not having a high energy output, like maybe pugs or pekingese? Reality is that backyard breeders, irresponsible owners, and those who abuse their dogs are the problem, not the breed. Again, via you're poor justification, many breed should not be pets including, but not limited to: Chow Chow, Bull Terrier, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Basenji, Saint Bernard, Akita Inu, Malamute, German Shepard, Cane Corso, Dobermann, Boxer, Bull Mastiff. So, we should stop breeding all of these dogs as well? Because when mishandled these breeds will kill as well.

Re: The world starts too early: I am an always and forever night owl, even at 31 years old with a 9-6 job, I can't fall asleep before 11:30pm (and that's the earliest I can fall asleep, most of the time it's after midnight) and wake up between 10 and noon on the weekends, so I instinctually agree with starting the world later. But I also know that everyone has a slightly different circadian rhythm, and some people are like me naturally, and others are natural morning people, so what I really think would help is if the world was more flexible on time. If more jobs offered both earlier and later hours for work and allowed all employees to choose their hours, and more businesses offered earlier and later business hours (mainly thinking about banks and other places like that that are generally only open 8-5) the world would be more comfortable for everyone. Me and my night owl friends will work the later shifts so the morning people can be in bed by 8, and the morning people can work the earlier shifts so we can sleep til 10 every day. I know I would work much more productively if I could stay up later and sleep later consistently. Unrelated: pasta and noodles are the same thing.

Well, any dog is capable of killing. Bully breeds were bred for fighting in the early 1900s, but an animal’s behavior develops through an interaction between environment and their genetics. And over the years their genetics have changed. Many breeds have come from the original “fighting” dogs like Staffys that are statistically not aggressive or dangerous. These different breeds are lumped together under the term “pitbull” so many of the attacks reported are inflated because they don’t show the specific breed. And most of incidents are from illegal dog fighting and neglected/abused animals. Bully breeds are really great dogs, and unless you’ve been around them I don’t think it’s a safe or just assumption to say no one should have them.

A better definition of introvert versus extrovert is that an introvert is somebody who generally feels energized by being by themself or spending time with themselves and for whom social interaction, even if they enjoy it, is draining. An extrovert would be the opposite; social interaction is energizing and spending time on their own could be draining, even if they enjoy spending time with themselves. It has nothing to do really with the person's propensity to share their opinion or engage in conversation regardless of the medium, though of course certain mediums might be preferred by certain people like you said with the self-selected Reddit population. For example, I'm an introvert, I don't have social anxiety at all, I just really prefer my own company over the company of others, save a few very key people. But interacting with strangers on the internet or through texting is less draining than if I were to have the same conversation in person because I'm not having to worry about is my body language being read correctly, am I making enough eye contact at the right time (part of that is my ADHD and my slight ASD), and it also gives me the ability to step away from the conversation when I'm drained. It's harder to do that in person because it can be considered rude. Which is also why small talk is difficult, it's not the topic that is bothersome. It's the fact that I'm engaging in an interaction purely for the social expectation, not because I'm actually trying to communicate an opinion or a thought or information to another person. I enjoy having really good conversation with many people, but small talk makes me want to rip my hair out because it means nothing and does nothing except perpetuates his expectation that we interact with other people simply because we're near them.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THIS IS IT EXACTLY! So many people use the word 'introvert' to describe someone who specifically dreads/does not enjoy social interactions when they mean 'shy' or 'socially anxious'. Listen, I am often the person who makes plans with friends. I look forward to the times when we can hang out, I enjoy myself during the event, and I miss them when we part ways. Then, when I get home, I'm ready to be by myself and don't want anyone to acknowledge my existence for the next 3-5 business days. But that doesn't take away from the fact that I still enjoyed going out and being around people.

Also, if you are not the most attractive person in the group, and your potential date is trying to figure out which one you are, only having group photos really works against you. Your willingness to do the work on your profile/photos directly corresponds to the kind of responses you're gonna get. the zombie show yall are wanting is iZombie!!!!! the zombie outbreak part is after a few seasons but it really builds up what it would look like and explores why zombies exist and exploring cures. the show starts the focus on one individual who got infected but the show builds up slowly on how everyone around her gets affected by her zombification and how that leads to the whole world getting affected. I don't lile cop shows or zombie shows, but somwthing about the main character really pulled me into this one

I guess, I understood that the US doesn't have a great cleanliness standard over all, which is where the mattress on the floor was an issue. 😅

But isn’t it common also to put the mattresses away when you’re not sleeping? Like it doesn’t stay on the floor the whole time. Typical US-European mattresses are huge and bulky, so it wouldn’t be an everyday chore to put them away or let them dry properly Correct me if I’m wrong 😅

The reason most people don't have it on the floor in the US is humidity and it's considered gross to have it on the floor. Floors are not less clean in the US though

Ok so, about pit bulls…. It’s all in the owners and not the dog itself. I had a pit and she was the sweetest. They used to be known as nanny dogs because of their loyalty and nurturing tendencies.

I worked as a waitress in college, and I think the reason many restaurants got rid of physical menus is because once COVID hit, restaurants were required to disinfect every menu between tables to meet safety regulations and remain open. With limited seating capacity and limited staffing, it was too difficult to keep with the stacks of menus that had to be disinfected before they could be used again. The QR code menus reduced this burden and gave staff more time to spend cleaning other areas of the restaurant and helping more customers.

On the pit bull stance it's a actually a wide misconception that they are super mean and scary they were actual breed as nanny dogs but they are very strong and have a powerful bite and that's why people have chosen to train them for dog fighting it just depends on the owner any dog is capable of doing the same damage a pit bull can do if the owner is bad and they don't feel safe

The nanny dog thing is not true. Pit bulls were bred to fight. Statistics speak for itself....Pitbulls are deadly....especially to other dogs and children. Sometimes pitbulls will kill adults too....happens all the time....look it up....and also alot of the time the Pitbull is the sweet family pet that would never hurt a fly, gentle they say....until it kills their children. Look up the case that happened in Memphis Tennessee. Killed their two children and seriously injured the mother. Tragic.

The nanny dog thing is a lie made up by Lilian Rant in 1971, she was the president of the Staffordshire bull terrier club in America and needed to market them to homes because no one wanted them.

Sorry if this was already said I couldn't find it in the comments but pitbulls were literally called 'nanny dogs' because they were so gentle and loving around babies. And as other comments have stated it was then later down the line with pit bulls being abused, mistreated, and raised for fighting that they gained this reputation as ferocious or vicious

Cristine talking about the cultural difference of sharing opinions and how that seems to be spreading reminded me of some stuff I've read about the domination of American culture online. I think it'd be interesting to hear Ben and Cristine talk about that as non-US citizens but very adjacent to that culture.

I'm absolutely with Ben that physical menus at restaurants should still be the norm. On a practical level, I have never gotten a QR code to work on my phone, so I literally cannot access that kind of menu. On a social level, I am there for the experience and to be present in the moment. The second the phone comes out it sets the tone of everyone I'm with hunched over the tiny phone screen in silence for a while, and lots of people will leave the phone out afterwards. I think phones should be put away and out of sight to be present in the moment.

I think the topic of what size or breed of dog a person should have is relative to the amount of time, effort, training, etc. a person is willing to put into being a responsible pet owner. Any untrained animal is only acting as an animal would in the wild, and it is a pet owner's responsibility to dedicate time and effort towards training that animal, for the safety of the animal itself and the people around it. I have had two pitbulls in my life and they were the sweetest, gentlest dogs I have ever interacted with, and that was a result of my step-mom putting in the necessary amount of training required of those animals. I agree that if you aren't prepared to put in the time, effort, research, and training required of a certain animal, then you shouldn't have it, but that is relative to any and all animals from the smallest fish to the biggest horses. A horse could easily kill or harm a child, but that is not inherently the horse's fault if that were to happen. It is the responsibility of pet owners to create safe environments for their animals. Also, reactive/aggressive dogs are not born that way, unfortunately there are some people in the world who mistreat animals and sometimes train them to be aggressive, that is why there are so many organizations that exist to rescue animals from abusive situations. Pit bulls unfairly get an especially bad reputation for being aggressive, when a properly trained pit bull can be just as gentle as any other dog. There are no bad dogs, only bad/neglectful/irresponsible l owners who do not have the animal's best interest at heart, which results in a dangerous situation for the animal, as well as the people who interact with it. I do not think Ben intended to be hurtful with what he said regarding pit bulls, because that is a pretty common conception that people have about that breed of dog. However, it is important to remember not to over-generalize about an entire breed of dog, especially when that breed of dog has historically been mistreated and abused by humans.

My brothers have two pit bulls and they’re two of the kindest dogs I’ve ever met. It’s not the pit bulls or Rottweiler that are bad it’s the owners who train them that way. There are humans who have 50-60 pound of muscle and can break a persons arm like a twig that doesn’t necessarily mean that human being is dangerous. So just because a dog has muscle and strong jaws doesn’t mean their necessarily dangerous either.

A lot of dogs can do damage.. don’t think pit bulls or Rottweilers are inherently aggressive, I think you guys are forgetting that people make them aggressive. I’ve had many Rottweilers my whole life and their litters and none of them bit anyone or were aggressive.

On the “the world starts to early” I think it is more that some people have different natural sleep schedules. Like how there are morning people and night owls. For night owls, even if we go lay in bed at 8 pm… we just can’t sleep… so we just lay there till we naturally fall asleep at 10/11 pm… so for us it’s not natural to wake up at 7 am…
@cowalarmclock

I agree about the night owl thing, but I'm just curious about how long you sleep. If I fall asleep by 11pm, I think 7am is the perfect time to wake up! And I wouldn't consider myself a night owl. I am in my thirties though, so that has an effect.

@@cowalarmclock I guess I’m kind of a special case because my body requires like 10 hours of sleep to wake up not feeling like death… most night owls would probably be closer to 12am.

Now, as someone who used to go to school at both 7.30am and 13.50pm, I gotta say I prefer the later shift better (We did that because there were too many students and not enough classrooms for all of them at once). But one thing to note is that I had a really hard time studying (probably because of adhd) so I hated the fact that I had to study late at night or again, early in the morning just to be slightly less unprepared. There were times when I used to wake up at 5am to study last minute and I fell asleep in classes because I was so tired. Overall, it really felt a lot better to wake up and have breakfast, perhaps even lunch oh my, and study and go to school more awake and functioning. Needless to say... I'm glad university schedules are vastly different.
