Totally agree with your comment-raising a protection breed puppy is a different than raising a yellow lab-there of course are done crossovers but once the protection dog genes kick in, you’d better know what you are doing. Please do your research! That’s why these dogs wind up in shelters/or are dumped-I got my Cane Corso from a kill shelter. She should have never wound up there.

All my life, since childhood I wanted to have a German Shepherd. I really love the breed. But when finally I had an opportunity to get a dog, I thought hard and decided not to take a risk of not able to handle it. I got a cocker spaniel instead. It was such joy to have a dog that is never aggressive, always friendly with everybody, humans and dogs, and does not even know that she can bite someone. And at the same time, very confident and smart. I still like German shepherds, but I never regretted having my spaniel girl. Watching this video I think how awful it must be to be afraid of your own dog and be constantly on alert.

The explanation of how obedience translates to real life application is SO good! I've had people tell me I keep my dogs at really high standards and I do, because I want to keep them as safe as I can by having a handle on their behavior. I can't control the environment 100% but I can get close to that number with the dogs' behavior through high levels of obedience which really can mean life or death.
@blip-2024 Жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. I have a Cane Corso mix. She is held to an extremely high standard of behavior because of her breed. People are biased against her because of how she looks. The dog in my pack people REALLY need to fear is the Chihuahua x Pug... she's excessively dominant and a constant project. She is held to the same standards as the Cane Corso. It's just a whole bunch more work to keep her there.

15:08 I LOVE what you said here. I have a cattle dog. He's 2 years old and we've been going through training together for over a year now. He's amazing now - an absolute love when introduced to well-behaved dogs gradually and correctly. People don't understand why he doesn't like dogs running up to him on hiking trails or at parks. But I know that while he's gone through so much training and is such a confident, well-rounded dog now, he is still a cattle dog. And these dogs, typically, were bred to be reserved and cautious of strangers, other dogs etc. They weren't bred to be your happy-go-lucky pup without a care in the world. So I know this and I respect his boundaries. He doesn't like strange dogs running up to him without a proper introduction. No big deal. My job is not to set unrealistic goals and try to make him be fine with dogs running up to him. My job is to step in and advocate for him when irresponsible owners let their offleash dogs do whatever they want.

Great video as always Tom! I’ve referred two people this week to your channel for e-collars! I’m upset because I took George my GSD to a doggy day care today, walked in and they said he wasn’t going to be a good fit because he was wearing a prong collar! It was his assessment day and they told me “dogs that wear prongs are aggressive”. I set his appointment up over the phone and there was no mention of how they judge a dogs behavior based on the collar they wear! I told them they are seriously misinformed and it was unfair to George because he’s not aggressive at all. They asked why the prong? I said he was trained by using “International Dog Trainer Tom Davis” and for them to check out your channel immediately!

It sounds like this facility knows very little about dog behavior. Which is kinda scary considering they’re dealing with a group of dogs. Tom's explanation of how an owner can cause anxiety and reactivity in dogs here is groundbreaking. I have a reactive Doberman and a German Shepherd and on any given day, the reactivity and barking is so much worse if I'm stressed or having a bad day. It's such good advice to say if you're going into a situation and aren't mentally prepared or feel nervous then no matter what the dog's state of mind is, get out of there. You have to get calm first.

Been on a bit of binge with these vids the last week or so, and the reccuring theme, that really does stand out is, is how in a good 70% of the cases, its just owners with slow brains. I understand everyone is different, and everyone learns differently, but on so many occasions Tom will give a clear, simple instruction, and the owners just have no idea what they're doing. Prime example is the "stay" command in this vid. Tom corrects like 3 times, and the woman still looks at him in utter confusion ? .. like ... how can you not differentiate "stay", from "can you stay pleaaaaase ? 🥺" so frustrating to watch lol. Keep up the good work Tom, way more patience than most, and it really shows that majority of cases are where the owner needs training and not the dog.

Woot! More great content! Thank you! I had Herm Sprenger pinch/prong collars for my GSDs that were easy on/off because the ends were threaded through a loop and connected with a super strong alligator type clip instead of always having to detach and reattach a single link. (In my personal experience not only was it easier to use with my tiny fingers, it also potentially reduced weakening any links especially if was always bending the same link. They also had a "dead" ring to attach the lead if you didn't need the pinch action. I wish I could explain it better, but if they're still made it might be an option for those who struggle with trying to muscle the individual links.) They might not be the strongest option, but if coupled with your little safety loop and using proper corrections (instead of constant pressure) it might be a helpful alternative to add to one's tool box.

My dog doesnt like to sit on ice, snow, or wet dirty grounds. Never heard of a dog who doesnt want to sit in "heat" :D .. I dont rly know if my further comment is needed, but ill go on. For me it sounds like, your dog is just picky about what he wants to do, maybe everything is just more exhausting for him even at that littl heat. Especially because it happens only when its a littl warm. If it would be like that all time, id start thinking about some body conditions why he might not want to sit. Nevertheless, i dont really know, what your aiming for. If your dog is nice, no danger, not the dominance in person, with good behaviour to humans and dogs, i would see absolutely no reason why hed NEED to sit, when his heeling is perfect, hes with u, and his doing is bothering kinda noone =) Doesnt make sense for me, but your dog sounds interesting and funny by what u tell ^^ :D

But I appreciate your response he has been doing flawless with it sense it’s cooled off. I was mainly doing it at street corners and he was like looking at me like “hey I’ll stay right here but it’s not comfortable to sit” so idk just don’t want him having bad habits!

I made it a policy that I would never subject my dog to something I wouldn't subject myself to, so I put his bark collar on and barked lol. I could feel it alright - it was shocking.

What do you do if your dogs fight constantly and what it could be?

Dog aggression, genetic. Low tolerance. Conflicting personalities, not all dogs will like each other. Guarding resource

Hi Tom I too have subscribed but can't get the membership. I also have a 2 1/2 year old mastiff mix and having problems with people teasing her as she's tied outside...causing major frustration for both of us which in turn creating alot of anticipated anxiety for us both as well....it's making for a very unhappy environment....need your expert advice you are awesome thank you very much. I am currently still looking to move out of the neighborhood or town altogether but finding it difficult to find a place that will accept her. She is only 80 pounds but very strong...rather small for the breed...medium sized and very gentle and loving. She is a very good guard dog. It's just her and I.

Not wearing the proper muzzle, that’s a grooming muzzle.. she needs a basket! I’m sure this would’ve been addressed! Another impressive job UCA!

My German shepherd is only 5 months and I’m considering to get him a prong collar is it bad for him. I’m not able to stop him from barking at other dogs or lunging at them on walks now and don’t want to wait till he gets more bigger and it be more difficult to train him
@marinodejesus80243 жыл бұрын
At 5 months you should be socializing him with other dogs and things. Only taking him on walks will not help you. I'm 99% sure he is just unsocialized not aggressive. Go to a dog park and just sit with him outside the fence for hours so he can get used to being around dogs.

@@marinodejesus8024 dog parks are garbage. Accident waiting to happen, Tom has said it many times. Try to start with a martingale with a chain for audible correction. If that doesn't work just go to a prong. I was in the same boat with my dog at the same age and was advised against a prong by a local trainer, but I wish I could go back and start with a prong earlier.

@@anonguy6453 you didn't understand what I wrote. I said stay on the other side of the fence so he can see the dogs. I never said to go in nor did I recommend it.

Did you do research on GSD? They are known barkers. My neighbor has one who never will shut up. She is using a no bark collar and it does not work. I think owners encourage their Germans to bark as puppies but as they grow older then they can't stop them. And they are just annoying and bark at everything.

Why would she get a super protective dog that originates from South Africa but say you did not want a super protective dog?

Awww… enjoy the puppy. This is the best time with them. Recall takes a while to learn so be patient. Make it fun. Run around and have to puppy chase you while telling it to come. Make it fun for both of you. Have treats and toys to reward. A true “come when called” can come later. I’m big on thresholds at this age. The sooner you teach the dog not to run out the door when it’s open the better. I put a rug by the door. I practice staying when I touch the door knob then start slowly opening the door. Then leaving it open a crack. Leash always being attached for safety. Eventually leaving the door open without the dog leaving. I have treats and toys to reward good behavior. This is a good thing also for teaching a dog not to drag you out the door which will be a problem as the dog gets bigger. I can’t tell you how many people lose their dogs to running out the door into traffic. If everyone could just take the time to teach this basic skill. Good luck! 🍀
