Thanks for this piece of german history. Well, my grandfather was in the ground forces, Panzergrenadiere i guess, who attacked the soviets. He got hurt by gunfire and shipped to a military hospital in Augsburg. After he healt completely, the war was over and he walked from there home to Dettingen unter Teck. Our village had become a bombing target to the americans in early 1945, because they suspectet it to contain fled german soldiers. It was 80% destroyed.

My mother's family were American servicemen at the time, and my father's family would not cross the "pond" till the 1950's. Though our grandfathers were bitter enemies, (who knows, perhaps they even shot at each other. ) and I am aware of the ethnically based hatred our people tend to have for each other (though recent studies have shown that Europeans are connected to one blonde haired, blue eyed patriarch) I like knowing what the Germans have to say regarding such a horrid and tragic point in European history.

@Winston Churchill's Ghost I am sorry but I do not have any. Imagine British, French or Polish commanders tell their soldiers lets rape these women and then kill them all and take their property. It would never happen, not possible, it could result in riots etc. But, guess what, German soldiers did it, I know just one name, one guy who refused execution of the civilians in occupied Poland. He was executed himself. Compassion is the last thing I feel about 'German foot soldiers'.

+Funny Farmer The point is that Hitler and his NAZI ruling party took out all the worst from human nature. This soldiers ,looking as us, as a matter of fact were beast in German uniforms .They only look so nice because pictures were taken by trained propaganda operator of Goebbels office and officer told them to keep smiling because it was for Germans in Fatherland to see how brave and smart they were. This grinning to camera young boys maybe few minutes ago raped and hanged a Russian or Italian girl! or used hand saw to cut genitalia from Yugoslav partisan. I recommend you to read a book by E M.Remarque, German writer titled "Time to live, time to die".He wrote just after the war how it was on Eastern Front really. The point is that people being under German occupation during II ww have different view on the Werhmacht "friendliness" and are special sensitive on SS-formation.They suffer too much atrocities from them. They were whole families wiped out ,whole villages! Still wounds are fresh so do not be surprised that the anti-German feelings are still so vivid .

Goebbels people used this technic " private film " up to abuse in II ww .They were masters because well paid for what they did for Goebbels. What are private films one can detect on YTB. Many really private films are shown and there is some subtle difference in directing because they were amateurs films

owen lloyd And most of those were sold as postcards. There were some really good cameras back then that could take color photos, even without the grain that you often see, like i the photos here. So I would say the photos here were indeed taken with a color film camera, but one that wasn't of the highest quality. I think the old magazine Yank and the German Signal used a lot of color in their pictures though.

Although a lot of b/w film has been colorized over the last 20 years (thanks to sophisticated digital equipment ), these look genuine to me. Agfa introduced color-positive film as early as 1936, so color-negative film was probably available all through WWII. As mentioned above, it was VERY expensive, and getting the film processed would have been extremely difficult and would have required personal contacts with specialized labs in the field or in Germany. However, Luftwaffe units would have been ideally placed for this sort of thing, as exposed film could have been put on transport planes as unofficial cargo.

Haunting. At 1:51, does the bride have a shiner? And at 2:36, the guy on the right looks like he has olive skin! Maybe an enlisted Italian man?

The uncle of my dad was in the German Navy(marine) his ship sank in africa in 1944 i think. We have a book full of pictures of his time in WW2. He is 99 now. Sadly nobody cares about him. He tried to commit suicide a year ago after his beloved wife Tante Lisel died. Sadly Onkel Hans as we Call him lives 3hours away. The last time I saw him was on his wifes funeral.

Pictures are such innocent, peaceful life of soldiers shown ,! that one can get impression that it was vacation! .Behind the scene was a reality that this people were part of Hitler's war machine and did terrible things in Europe all over.

+owen lloyd Your right! Please read books of E.M.Remarque , a German writer who just after the war was over, commenced to write how it was really at that time .Special recommended book is " Time to live , time to die ". There is right on first 20 pages, as introduction , description of war front line in winter, in Russia. The best description of war I have ever red.! You can see by this fine literature image how Germans were in reality. The beginning is slow, emotion less account how a group of German soldiers raping a Russians girl and woman before hanging them .A girl and her mother were caught close to fighting zone and being suspicious to be partisans, without court and just on order of an officer were hanged .Than you have what the soldiers talk about and what they were doing to live in -40C trenches as fightings froze with the wave of winter . From that description you will met truth about the war in Russia and how Germans behavioured there and what they felt. Nice piece of pacifistic art ! After the war it was common silence on the atrocities made on East and in Yugoslavia,Italy .Germans preferred not to comment that matter. Preferred to forget. That was no public wide spread debate. If so .people who made the debate were very effectively "silenced". Still NAZI were very influential and not put at Justice.General feeling was " just to wait"and live till Allied grip loosen . And now we have what we have .Still NAZI ideas are vivid :)and such Goebbels propaganda film aiming to glorify Wehrmacht + SS and make full of watchers . Publicizing and simultaneous keeping silent what kind of role they played in ethnic cleanse in " industrial ,modern " way. is just continuation of NAZI politic in disinformation of society ,this time youngsters .

I do not believe you seen this book you just pretend that you have it in hand .If you red this book you will find such episode .On first part that is description of front line during winter and narrator see a woman dandling from a galow, her body was frozen in -40C and narrator in passive way recalling that she was hanged, without court for alleged spying .Whole German company raped her before she was executed.Than narrator describe how it was done , in details, how some of them shrink from but other made it very willingly.Than had recalled that they made a lot of similar acts alongside of front line because it was war, nobody would care of single woman ,besides there were rumours of Soviets spies , so it was act of "humanity " for her. Just read this piece if literature , it is fine reading to have a useful time spending. Tutorial in every word !

We must read different books, the Russian civilians were afraid of Russian soldiers who were released from jail, Russians commited almost all the crime as released 10 years ago, so truth might be in between

He had first hand accounts of German POWs in French camps .In other books he was writing more tiny , detailed facts which as well can be found in well documented other sources f.e. Allied Forces archives from spy reports of German POWs in Britons POW camps. If you deny Germans account , Russian's and American's that means that you know nothing about Germany history and you are NAZI sympathiser

Posibly - Look like British Officers uniform caps and the insignia on the offside front wing of the car on which they are sitting - but no officer's pips on epaulettes and insignia on the tunic collars instead. Perhaps a captured car and hats. Intriguing!
