It's been a while since I've done a video so I kind of wanted to go all out with this one. This environment took me about 2 weeks worth of free time to complete. I really wanted to hit the highest fidelity I could with this environment, and while some things could have been pushed further I'm still overall happy with the way things turned out overall.
My overall goal for this environment visually was to create a lush forest that is very heavily detailed while still maintaining strong clarity. I also didn't want to create a regular old forest but wanted to do one in my own unique style in creating spaces that are almost hyper realistic, a bit over the top but not out of the realm of realism.
A few of the visual features used in this video that may not be as obvious:
Screen Space GI
Heavy use of Decals, water running down cliff sides/rocks, and little mud paths on some of the downward slopes.
Contact Shadows to get very defined shadows on small objects like clovers.
Tessellation on landscape to really make small stones/details feel more realistic.
Volumetric fog to get realistic shadow casting on fog as well as a shader to give it some volume/noise.
All art assets used in this video are from the Unreal Marketplace/MegaScans. While assets were taken from the marketplace they were all heavily edited to fit a specific art style Only a few things like the water running down the rocks and a few of the VFX/volumetric fog were created by me.
The Music used in this video is from the games Oblivion, and Icewind Dale
I had a lot of fun creating this one and hope to do a few more scenes using these assets going forward!

Stunning. Wish the camera moved a little more realistically, but other than that, pure eye candy.

Art imitates real life. Video game developers work hard to try to portray things in real life with computer graphics. An artist uses a paint brush to match the colors of a beautiful forest.

I agree, Unreal seriously needs a update its water system so it would look great out of box. Scene quality itself is worth AAA badge.

A lot of the assets came from both the "Broadleaf Forest Biome" and "The Forest v1.4" packs on the unreal marketplace. The large rocks/cliff pieces came from a pack called "Terrain Blending Rocks" All of the assets have been heavily edited/updated to get the look in this video though! There were a number of other packs involved as well but those were the major ones. In all I probably spent about $500 on the assets in this video alone.

Really inspiring and great work! I started out making environments a couple of weeks ago. I´m doing okay with smaller indoor stuff, but I find landscapes a lot more challenging. Can you recommend any videos / tutorials / learning resources? It´s really hard to determine which is the best topic to start with if you don´t know yet what exactly you´re looking for.

Hey man - do you happen to do any in person teaching sessions at an hourly rate?? I have a project coming up that requires this level of detail on a large scale and I havent used Unreal to that scale before but your work looks amazing. Faily large bugdet for the project so would be interested to hear what you think! I can send my email if interested. Thanks, Nick

Remember Uncharted, Tomb Raider and The Elder Scrolls did you use your light probes? your lod transition is too smooth i don't see changes, some parts of rock have water and particles very smart placed it is a master piece. Do you have troubles with landscape material compiling a huge number of shaders on 4.24?
@evilmrfrank
@evilmrfrank 4 жыл бұрын
I actually didn't use my light probes, I probably should have, would have helped a lot in some areas :P I didn't have too many issues with this one as far as landscape material compiling but the actual landscape isn't too large though either so that is probably most of it. LOD's were mostly using the new dithering transition so they are nice and smooth!
