Wanted to get in and mess around with the new features in UE5. This scene took me about 2-3 hours. I wanted to do things at a base without really adding additional pointlights or tweaking any of the major visual settings like messing around with directional/sky light, or any major Post Process effects, mostly to just get an idea of how far UE5 would go at the bare minimum with default settings across the board. It's crazy how natural and complete UE5 looks without any effort or extra work on developers.

Oh you're back! Now with an even more powerful weapon! >:3 Honestly, UE5 looks great, at least from my non-dev standpoint. Their new global illumination system looks very interesting.

In the past my tweaking of settings was almost always about getting things to work right technically. With UE5 it feels like any tweaking of settings I do is just for art direction. Glad to see you posting. We would love to see some scenes by you in UE5!

Yea, exactly how I currently feel about it. I have probably spent thousands of hours tweaking all of those little values or adding hundreds of point lights to fake things in a bit more. Now everything just works, its a real game changer!

Hey Ben have missed being able to watch you make these amazing landscapes, hope your doing well. Been having a blast on the new gen 2 map, Recently made some new friends who are alao ark crazy and today spent a few hours enjoying the skybox. One of my new friends is also into astromancy and had recognized some of the space shots planets and consolations. Looking forward to seeing how the ark 2 map turns out.

I see this unreal 5 stuff and it looks really impressive in terms of detail but there does seem to be something wrong. Like the scaling or something. When you watch a movie say for example in a rain-forest with huge hills, it seems like unreal 5 just doesn't cut it, the hills don't look big enough or something is not right. Or even if you think of a scene at of a mission impossible movie, like if hes running down a building or falling, in the movies everything seems a lot bigger looking.

well thats probable because 1) depth of field, not in this case but its a common mistake to puth a lot of "blur" in the background, that makes thing look smaller which in scenes like this shouldn't be the case. and 2) having a reference, in this case you don't really know how big it is because you can't tell how big that tree or rock in the ground is, because it could be anything basically, but in movies you often have people in the scenes, and if not you have other things (windows in buildings, vehicles, animals, etc): With that your brain can do a good approximation of the size of the scene. For me the scaling of this scene is good, so the problem might be other, personally i think it's just that lumen isn't as good as ray tracing yet, maybe it's the lighting setup that it needs a little more brightness or contrast, etc edit: forgot to mention, camera settings are also very important. field of view, some lens things that i can't remember right now, and a few other things. Normally if it looks too small, it also seems like it has a lot of zoom on it and the camera is way back, that kinda creates an isometric view that also helps for that look
