Many of our games will require some sort of inventory system! And let me tell you, there are too many ways to count to make something like that but today, lets take a look at how you can get started on building your own inventory system!

Would it be better to make a simpler version for a combat game? I guess a crafting mechanic is out of the picture, so maybe. Excellent videos I love learning, thanks! 😃

it all depends on what you need :) if you just need a hanful of potions and maybe weapons, this system might be a little overkill. if youre going full survival game, you'll want to build some more on top of this system but you could very much extend this to use in a crafting system too.

@@thegamedevcave Gotcha. I think I'm looking for basics. I've only watched this video but when I have some time I'll do a follow along. I'm just starting out, the only game I'm working on so far is from a course on Udemy, just something to get me going.

​@@searbhreathach9762 I am still a beginner and I have looked at and followed countless tutorials on inventories and full game series like on Ryan's channel www.youtube.com/@RyanLaley and heaps of others. I have tried using assets from the marketplace but as I don't have any real coding knowledge I have ended up frustrated that I can't get things to work the way I want. Anyway what I am saying is this tutorial so far (although a bit messy at times 😁) is doing all the basic stuff that I can hopefully flesh out to do what I need it to. The difference with this one is it's using data assets and not data tables with structs and hard references making it much more efficient and flexible. I have learned heaps following this, little things that are often missed by other tutorials, and I absolutely recommend following along even just to learn how a system like this works. Also I need a crafting system too and I will attempt to use this series to create one although I do hope Thegamedevcave covers this soon 🙃

@@thegamedevcave I''ve been following this series and makes me so happy when you post. GAGA Ive been suck on trying to apply what you have taught me with inventory system, but I applied it to a hotbar system. I am currently trying to figure out how to to pull the weapon out when i hit a key haha. KEEP POSTINGGGGGGG :D

Awesome course. do you think you can explan how would work with non-free slots on drag and drop and set it automatically to the top index of the inventory slot and if item should be stacked stack it on the top slot index? Thank you keep focus, Great course again!

I think what you're asking for is what's covered in the previous couple of videos in this series already, merging, splitting stacks and swapping item slots

@@thegamedevcave I meant that when you drag an object in the inventory it is automatically placed in the first available slot in the inventory and if it matches a stackable object it would stack and if it was already fully stacked it would put the items in the next available slot. And in case it was a different item that made swap, but I remember that you already added that. I'm going to check the videos again. Thank you very much for answering me
