in the parlance of the time, such a succinct way to describe why the game's rulebook helps convey the setting!

I started a new deadlands noir campaign. We are new to this version of deadlands, I think the last one we played was 2e I think. The stats were based off of drawing cards. I didn't want to read the history between them and the 1930's so I made the south in a last act of desperation summon a 60 foot tall demon to fight the northern army. With that at the head the army was being slaughtered. The north got a bunch of spellcasters together to summon its own demon. Their fight lasted days and destroyed a lot of land. In the end, both died allowing the slightly stronger north to round up the remnants of the southern army. This led to magic being banned during the prohibition time. I thought this was a neat idea.

The original Deadlands was full of tangible gaming aids, dice, cards, paperclips and poker chips...a large overhead but well worth it.

I've just returned to the hobby after many years. After much research and deliberation, the three games I got was Cold Shadows (cause it's infused with John Wick-ness), the latest Savage Worlds (emboldened by the fact that you have such high opinion of the system) and They Came from the Sea. I'd love to know what you think of the latter.

I had a ton of fun playing Deadlands back when it was fairly new. I thought there was a steep learning curve on the system, but once you had it, it worked so danged well for what it was going for. I'll have to check out the Savage Worlds version at some point.

John, I have thought of a mechanic for 7th Sea. Since the GM can say something true about a Player’s Hero but the GM must give the Player a Hero Point, I thought it would a interesting to let other Players say true things about each others’ Heroes and the ‘targeted’ gets three dice for the next scene, which would be equivalent to what the ‘target’ Hero would get if another player spent a Hero Point to increase the number of dice for a roll.

I’m running Deadlands for the first time since the 90’s with this version and it’s been good fun. As I’m running with newbies and have such a distance from editions I’ve managed to just take the setting on without the Morgana Effect, but it’s fun seeing an in-canon way to retcon and smooth out those problematic elements.
