This is an AWESOME trick. I just tried it for the first time (on my mom lol) I practiced last night and this morning. It felt soo weird doing it blindfolded, but it worked well!! I came up with a good method (magicians force) for the remaining 3 cards. When you spread 3 cards in your hand you can tell which card is being taken. So... let's say the card is on the bottom (so #3) I say "take a card". If they take the bottom card then I just say "ok turn it over" and that's their card. Let's say they take the top card. Then I say "take another one". Let's say they take the middle one... the one left in my hand is theirs so I say "that leaves me with one card" and i turn it over. Let's say they take the top card first... then I say "take another card" and they take the bottom card #3. I say "ok put that one on the table.... now get rid of the card you're holding and I'll get rid of the one I'm holding." That leaves only one card on the table. Which is their card.

Normally, I'm not a fan of card tricks were the process elimination and magicians choice is used. I make an exception with this effect, though, because there comes the point in the process where, unless you remember the correct number, even you don't know where their card is now. So, for sure, The Spectator doesn't know either. Even if he suspected The Magicians Choice method, she would have to figure you're taking a huge Gamble Lively eliminating cards. So, yeah, discard passes even my strictest conditions. Also, I love old tricks made new again.

Many thanks for this lovely effect. I am currently experimenting with it. You have a wonderful channel full of powerful and clever effects. There may be a viable methodology to eliminate both the need for the spectator to reveal the exact pile their card is in during the performance and which will also usefully eliminate the need for any use of magician's choice. Just one carefully chosen fish to eliminate down from five to one or two cards. We deal the initial four piles ourselves using subtle markings on our card mat (or patterned table cloth) to precisely position the four piles. Thus we gain information as to the pile their card is in at the start when the returned pile will naturally be out of alignment with the others. We simply use any pile their card is NOT in for the foundation for the consequent five pile spectator random deal. Their pile is gathered middle within the other three remaining piles as per normal later on. As they are looking through their pile we ask the spectator to select "An obscure card...perhaps a pip card....one that i would not possibly think of in a million years. " Thus we effectively steer the spectator away from court cards (and probably aces). The spectator will view this as a loose instruction of sorts and will follow it obediently but afterwards will not remember it as an abuse of their freewill! We then select two face down cards from each of the resulting five piles of four. We will make sure that in the gather up that the second from top cards from each pile are selected and are in second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth position. The rest of the cards we can eliminate. We are now down to ten cards. We can now have the spectator deal the cards into two equal piles. We eliminate the odds pile on the left. Now we are down to just five cards. From here on we may mix up the face down cards before gathering them up with their faces towards us. Looking at our potential candidates we will now devise the best probability avenue for a fish down to just two cards. We may use the colour of the cards to aid us. We should take into account the presence of any court cards and aces among the five remaining cards. Thus if there are three red cards out of five but two of these reds are court cards (or aces) and the other two cards are both black pip cards then we should go for black as our fish. If we are correct with our divination then great! We can then eliminate the three red cards in our hand (without showing them during the elimination) and there are now only two cards left. If we are wrong in our intuition then even better! We are now down to the one red pip card and we can directly eliminate down to the spectator's card. In the worse case scenario where we need to eliminate from two to the one true card use the following patter. "I am seeing two cards on your mind stream. That is interesting.........In your subconsciousness you seem to have first thought of one card before changing your mind more consciously to another. Please tell me what IS the card you are thinking off......Ah yes! I thought so. I am sensing that this card must therefore be the card you ALMOST thought of. We shall eliminate this (do not show it) and put it with all the others........and this is the card that i believe....and i could be wrong.....that you ACTUALLY thought of in the end........You certainly had a good choice from dozens of cards......I shall put this card face down in front if you. I may have just got the colour right or perhaps just the suit......we will now see how i did.....Please turn over the card yourself..." I would personally perform this variant with tarot cards from the major arcana. As well as making the performance more interesting for the spectator it would more importantly give us the potential for a more subtle fishing down from five to two cards. So for example we could fish for gender in the following way so that it seems that the spectator feels that they are not giving us any information of worth. "I am sensing that your card has a feminine energy to it. Am i right?". There is also the potential to fish for the overall emotional impact of the cards. Positive energy cards would include Strength, Justice, Temperance, Stars, The World etc. Negative energy cards would include The Tower, The Hanged Man, The Devil, Death, Fool etc. "I am sensing that your card has a positive energy to it. am I right?" Also we could fish for 'holy people' (High Priest, High Priestess, Hermit, The World) and for cosmic bodies (Sun, moon, stars) This particular methodology is certainly for the more confident and able mentalist magician. We could if we wanted to play really safe, eliminate the 'positioning of the piles' methodology at the start. This might be because of the danger of an awkward spectator adjusting ALL the four piles after returning their chosen pile to its position. We might simply turn about momentarily and note the exact pile whilst giving out the subtle patter instruction as concerning their choosing of an obscure pip card. It is likely that the spectator will be in engrossed in looking through their cards. They will not likely remember this afterwards.

I know this is old but I see in comments about acquiring old cards. I spent a lot of time at yard sales, estate sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and antique shops so I managed to find several "real old"" cards, but I also ran into a few that were not old but looked old but just needed roughing (not fluid). They make them for Hollywood and making five decks for one scene in an old western isn't worth the card companies time, so I believe if you contact one of the playing cared companies that you will be able to acquire one. Of course in this day and age I imagine you can get one on line somewhere. Just put them through the ringer first. If you are serious about this trick in its authenticity and want to tell the story of the blind magician then use this deck for only that. Make the investment of one dedicated deck. Since you do not have to use slight of hand the condition doesn't matter. Play with them at home until they are ragged. Wet them down and hang them separately ( I learned the hard way with different papers). Practice folds (maybe not), springs, tap the corners, like you are gonna split them, and they will fray a bit.etc. play with them constantly is the point. The older they really look, the stronger the effect will be. There are still riverboat casinos that still operate too, so you may get a deck from them ? Like all casinos they throw them out way before they are done in, and they usually have a picture of a water mill river boat on them and you can go from there. Typically they won't have borders, but if they do, just cut them off. Playing cards from way back then had no borders and were cut square so....still cannot believe this site has so few views ! Incredible tutorials ! I've paid , in the past, a lot of money to learn the secrets to tricks. You are all lucky and you don't even realize it. You can't ask books questions. You just have to read and reread it until you get it through your thick scull. That being said,, there are many many books out there with unbelievably fantatstic tricks that you will never see on the net. If you want to find truly amazing stuff no one has seen before, other than watching this master here, invest in your hobby/career. I've never bought a book that didn't pay for itself In a month.

At some moment (about 5:20) you said to ensure that the pack with the chosen card is placed in between any two other packs. What if the pack is placed on top or at the bottom? What difference would it make? Because during the next step the dealing of the cards can be done in a random order to make five packs.
@totallymagic

Too be honest it would make much difference, like you said the next move just has them deal in any order. I guess I've always done it this way and it works. Thanks for pointing that out.

I had no idea who invented this! It’s in a Karl Fulves book I own but he makes no mention of Lewis. Makes sense bc this self worker is beautiful and there are three different ways to arise on the final card in this dealing hands with a glimpse by the spectator (that I’m aware of). Beautiful choice of effect btw. Done correctly your audience will be dumbfounded

Totally Magic It turns out I was thinking of an effect called Poker Mental from Garcia and Schindler’s Magic Cards. This Lewis effect was presented by a lecturer at an IBM meeting. I knew I had seen it somewhere. I’m still going to look through the rest of the Fulves books bc no matter what ppl say about his work, I’m a fan of any great self worker that is completely impromptu. If you’re familiar with Poker Mental, procedurally it’s similar (but this is better). They both make use of the natural positioning of the cards after a What seems to be a very fair selection and collection procedure. Genius effect and thanks again for letting me know this was a Lewis routine all along. I cherish knowledge like that esp in this climate of instant media🙏🏻

'cause the second step is to put the right deck between the other two wrong ones, 5:21. When the fourth deck (another wrong one), is split into five groups, 5:37, its cards will become the bottom of the new decks. Then, when the person spreads the cards in their hands amongst the other five ones, the first wrong deck (the one that went to the top at 5:21) will make the second row of cards. The next deck (the one containing the right card) will be also split into the five groups, making the third row of cards of each deck (the second from the top). Then, another layer of wrong cards, from the deck that went to the bottom at 5:21, will complete the groups, becoming the top cards. So, the right card will always be the second from the top.

The cards used are called the Heirloom Deck (french faces), they come with 2 sets of picture cards. They are by Card-Shark. They are expensive but I think worth it. However, they don't appear to be plastic coated or Bicycle Cushion style finish which means they tend to stick together. However, the more I use them the better they are spreading now. Search Google as I can't remember which magic dealer I got mine from. Hope that helps.
