Unseen Charles and Diana clip shows Lady Di looking as if 'her world collapsed'

Newly unearthed footage of Prince Charles and Diana's infamous engagement interview has emerged, showing the Princess of Wales looking 'clearly dissatisfied' after her husband-to-be's comments asking if the couple were 'in love'. On February 24, 1981, after months of speculation, a 32-year-old Charles who had long 'needed' to find a bride was marrying an excited 19-year-old then known as Lady Diana Spencer. When they were asked - at the Buckingham Palace photo call - whether they loved each other, Charles's response to Diana's 'of course' was unforgettable: 'Whatever love means.' The clip usually cuts off immediately after Charles' comment, but in new footage, airing on Channel 5 on Sunday, shows the royal's face drop and show clear dissatisfaction at Charles' blundering comments.

So sad that the RF took advantage of that poor young naive girl of barely 19. It crushed my Heart to watch as her face looked like she just wanted to cry I could just feel her pain settling deep down to her stomach as her dreams disappeared in a moment , I can’t imagine how she held herself together at that moment. The beginning of Charles’s long abusive behavior was just setting in on her at that minute he said that in public. How her heart was hurting so very sad. I Can’t express how brutally cold and cruel Charles is.

Their engagement was on 3 February 1981 and they didn't get married until 29 July. At this point they barely knew each other, as Diana said they had only met 12 times before they were engaged. Diana clearly picked up on the "whatever love means" comment by Charles in the engagement interview, and although she did not know for sure he was having an affair in early February 1981, she strongly suspected it by the time of the wedding in late July 1981.

Her crestfallen expression made my heart hurt. His comment was embarrassing and thoughtless, and so public. The people wanted, and thought they were getting a fairytale and everyone close to them was fine with having everyone believe it was so. I suspect he said what he did for an audience of one - Camilla. He wanted her to know that while he might be marrying another woman, he would always love her. :(

I think what's even more interesting is that at 0:27 Charles has a microexpression of contempt-- this expression is one of the highest predictors of future divorce.
