The Landsknecht were a Germany mercenary unit of pikemen known for their prowess with their pikes, and later, also their rifles. They started off as a mainly Catholic force, but later on as the Protestant Reformation surged, Protestant Landsknecht mercenary units were also found. This created an interesting dynamic with both Catholic and Protestant Landsknecht fighting each other at battles such as the famous Battle of Pavia.
The Landsknecht also had a role in the Siege of Vienna, defending the holy city from the beginning of the struggle against the Ottoman forces until the end.

@@thewanderingeuropean3522 More likely it is "der Mann". Edit: In addition there is the line: "Bekomm´s ihm ewig wohl" which is difficult to translate. "Wohl bekomm´s" is an out of date expression for basicly "Cheers" or litterally "it may be well recieved" in that whatever you consume may do you well. So "Bekomm´s ihm ewig wohl" could be something like "May he take it well forever"- maybe? Idioms are just difficult to translate, but this way the allegory would survive.

​@@combatpillow2368 For the first no, larman is correct. It is most likely just a battle chant like hei-ridiridiran, ridiran. Or it could mean alarm or mentioning a certain coat of arms of a German Noble house. Either way, it doesn't say der Mann. For the "Bekomm's ihm ewig wohl", that is most likely true. I did not know that, I am new to learning German as can be seen on this channel.

I think the meaning is "Alarm". The litteral translation of "Lärman" in the German they spoke in this aera (Late-Middle High German?) would be something like "make noise". "Lärm" meaning "noise" and the "an" at the end means "on". So you can say "noise on" which I interpret as "Alarm" 😁

Love the reference to Gelderland and Bergen-op-Zoom. Landsknechts were used extensively in Dutch theatres of war during Charles V's wars of unification and in the early stages of the Dutch Revolt (Eighty Years' War).

A question from a person that's starting to learn german, shouldnt it be "Unsere liebe Fraue"? Frau is feminine so I dont see any reason why it is 'Unser". Could somebody pls explain that to me?

I think because it is referring to Mary it changes to Unser, however it might just be Unser' (as Germans do this a lot).

Actually it would be "Unsere liebe Frau"(singular) or "Unsere lieben Frauen"(plural) in modern high german. I think its just the development of the language after all this generations and the resulting change of grammar, because many old people tend to still say it like that. Also one point could be that "Unsere Fraue" sounds better while singing
