One of my favorite lessons I've listened to/watched so far. One thing that dawned on me recently is the inscription on temples. "House of the Lord". From my studies on the house of Israel I have come to learn that house can be used interchangeably with family. So, in a sense, the temple is proclaiming that this place is where the "family of the Lord" gathers. Thanks again!!

Thank you! I'm so glad you're finding value in some of these early videos. The technology wasn't as good but I think the content (especially these ones on King Benjamin and the later ones from Abinadi) are absolutely essential. And thank you for sharing that insight about the "House/Family" of the Lord! Beautiful thought!

I wish that I would have found you back when we were actually studying this in “Come Follow Me”. I would have shared then, as I am now ... That I can testify to the truthfulness that we do have a Heavenly Mother, for I have seen her! Back in 1985, before I became a member, I was hit by a car. While I was in San Diego Naval Regional Medical Center aka Balboa, I was given two different pain medications and as a result, my heart stopped, and I saw my body on the hospital bed and the medical staff working to revive me. I just thought “boring”, having had field surgery training back in the mid to late 1960’s. So I turned and started to meander along this beautiful path towards a group of people dressed in white. I could not see who they were. The colours and everything was so vibrant that I was in no hurry. As I was walking along the path a beautiful woman spoke to me and said, “Hello, my daughter. You will meet someone on path. Listen to what he says.”. I knew that she was not my so-called earthly mother, because to her I was just that dumb girl she gave birth to, instead of a son to replace the one that died and she couldn’t have any more children after me. The person I met was “Poppo-Abba”, my Jewish Grandfather and after lovingly argue for a bit, like we always did when he was alive, he told me that it wasn’t my time and I had to go back. That there was something I had to learn on this side of the veil. I didn’t learn it though until 1991 when I read the Book of Mormon and came to understand that Jesus Christ was and is the Messiah. My missionaries were a Senior Couple, who became “Mom & Dad”, who taught me who I saw by teaching me the hymn “O My Father”.

"Mankind was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were, all, my business. The deals of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!” ― Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

To me, this quote is the difference between teaching in the classroom ("my trade") and helping students in one-on-one conversations in my office ("my business"). In the first I'm addressing the masses, and in the second I get to minister to the one.

46:15 - 51:50 I found your discussion on the "third set of parents" that we choose really enlightening. For me it helped clarify a question I've always had. Why do Nephi and the angel use such a strong, uncomfortable word to describe Babylon (i.e. 1 Ne. 14:9-10)? Between Christ and the Church there is a covenant relationship, akin to a marriage. Between the adversary and his "church" there is also a relationship, but there is no covenant. Hence the strong language to emphasize the absence of a covenant.

The quotes are posted on the wall behind you and I was having trouble listening because I was trying to read them. I posted them so other obsessives would be able to listen. ;-) I like that you added to the aligned triple: God: Father, Son, Holy Ghost Creation: Plan, Build, Dedicate Birth: Spirit, Body, Covenant

I'm impressed that you could make them out in the background! As a bit of an obsessive myself, I know what you mean about clearing things up so focus can go back to other things!

I believe that the people of King Benjamin were already baptized; this is NOT baptism, it is something else. We do not become the children of Christ when we are baptized - there is no scripture that supports this. We do, however, become his children when we are born again through the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost (Mosiah 15:10-13: we become his seed; Mosiah 27:24-27: all people MUST have this experience). We also do not fully take Christ's name upon us when we are baptized. The sacrament prayer indicates that we only are "willing" to take his name upon us; it is pointing us to something more. Elder Oakes, 1985 - "Take His Name Upon Us" is a good talk on this. Bednar also has some good teachings on this. I am always interested in how this is taught in the church based on our traditions.

I love that talk from Elder Oaks! Also, it reminds me of the phrase "receive a fulness of the Holy Ghost" from D&C 109:15. There's definitely a spectrum we are meant to grow across!
