Part 3 of a 3-part verse-by-verse study of Mosiah 25-28, which recounts the consolidation of Limhi's and Alma's people with the people of Mosiah in the land of Zarahemla, as well as the conversion of Alma the Younger and the Sons of Mosiah. This part of the study focuses on Mosiah 27-28 and examines insights from the angel's message to Alma the Younger and the visit's aftermath. Join Jared Halverson for your weekly Come Follow Me study of the Book of Mormon!

Excellent thank you so much! I love the fact that Alma is stripped of all his ‘powers’ - can’t speak flattering words, no more charisma to attract people to him and completely dependent on others... I’d never looked at it this way before. And yet isn’t it sometimes the way the Lord brings us back to Him. He doesn’t force us back, but He makes sure that all the windows and doors are shut so that we can see the one open window with the bright light, and head back in the correct direction. 2 of our sons have left the Church and I keep praying that the Lord will bring them back, to give them experiences that will somehow point them back on the correct path. Thank you again.

I love your analogy of leaving the one true window open! I pray your sons will see the light and love that are shining through it. Alma the Elder isn't the only one holding out hope for wandering children!

Alma can send an angel to his son because as someone who has his calling and election made sure, he has certain powers as someone who is now "highly favored". This was true for Lehi, sending an angel to his wayward boys, Laman and Lemual, and if we had the full record, Saul in the NT. This baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost is what ALL of us MUST have in order to be fully redeemed from God. King Benjamin and Abinidai both taught these same things. It is also good to note that remission of sin is not the same as forgiveness of sin. That is why it is taught that we must retain a remission of our sins; these are great scriptures!

Thanks for your insights! I especially love what you pointed out about the difference between forgiveness and remission. Even that word--"remission"--which we often use with cancer survivors, teaches powerful principles when we relate it to sin. Thanks for tuning in--and chiming in!

Do you think you’ll go back and start from the beginning of the BOM??? And do you have other classes online by any chance?

Great question. I'd really love to have a video "library" of lessons for the entire Book of Mormon, but right now it's all I can do to keep up week-to-week. The videos on the First Vision and the "Awful Arithmetic of the Atonement" are outside the Book of Mormon track, and I'd love to expand those efforts, again, as time allows. Thanks for expressing interest--I really appreciate it!

Thank you for sharing. Love your insights. Is your mission statement ‘ sow bountifully’ ? I notice a plaque at your desk that says that.

I'm grateful you're enjoying these lessons! I'm not sure if I would call it a "mission statement," but "sow bountifully" is definitely a scriptural phrase (2 Cor. 9:6) that motivates me to do my very best. I hope the Lord is able to "reap bountifully," despite the meagerness of our contributions!

I'm grateful the Lord keeps those separate in His mind! I think we'd look at each other differently if we did the same.

I have a problem with "the pride cycle" as a concept. It sounds too much, to me, like "the water cycle" or "the Kreb cycle" or "the Carnot cycle". As an alternative to the notion of a cycle there is the notion of a tensor field, like "a magnetic field" or "a fluid field" or "a gravitational field". Vector (tensor) field models consist of an n-dimensional space wherein every place (point) has a distinct "arrow" or vector (tensor). In the case of pride the space is generally considered to be based on two variables: 1) riches:wealth v. riches:poverty; 2) pride v. humility. To generate the "pride cycle" we can think of four quadrants: wealthy:pride, wealthy:humility, poor:pride and poor:humility. In each of the four quadrants we can imagine four arrows: wealthy:pride->poor:pride; wealthy:humility->wealthy:pride; poor:pride-> poor:humility; poor:humility->wealthy:humility. Into the field is cast a soul who is acted upon by the flow field's current. The notion of a flow field is actually scriptural. Consider James "For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed." We can enhance the model by adding additional dimensions, such as heart:stone v. heart:flesh The approach is useful in part because it lends itself to nice visualizations. something like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenz_system#Gallery

Awesome insight! I agree that the name "pride cycle" leaves something to be desired, especially since it makes every step seem natural, when so much of it is based on our choices. I love your idea of a "field," especially in terms of magnetism or gravity, since there are definitely "pulls" in opposite directions. To me, it seems like the Lord is "in charge" of one half of the "cycle" and the Adversary is "in charge" of the other. These are the two poles in the magnetic field, or the two opposing gravitational pulls, and depending on which we choose to respond to along that pride/humility axis (we are agents in this vector), we get pulled towards opposite ends along the prosperity/destruction axis (we are objects in this vector). Thanks for the delicious food for thought!

I'm glad you liked it. It was just one of the tracks of background music that came with my video editing software, so unfortunately it doesn't really have a name or sheet music to go along with it. But out of the hundred or so I listened to, there were 3 or 4 that seemed scripture-appropriate, and that was one of them. Thanks again for tuning in!
