I just realised that either he must've genuinely been comfortable dressed like that, or it's just plain a disguise. The first thing people think when they see him is "elven apostate". Not weakened diety. Considering how impeccably dressed he is in Tresspasser I'm assuming that is either his "work clothes" so to speak, or he just finally dropped the disguise.

Hard to tell with Solas, because on one occasion he will tell you "posturing is necessary" as if it is necessary to pretend and the other he'll say he likes frilly cakes, good wine and court intrigue. Makes me wonder if in ancient Elvhenan he was more of an nerdy, unassuming schoolar type or cunning, decadent noble.

@@DianaRedwing I think it might be possible he was both. Perhaps he leaned heavy on the unassuming due to the rebellion and being incognito and "one of the people", but I feel like a part of him perhaps was quite comfortable in the finely tailored clothes with the decadent delicacies and no needs untended. After all, he *was* one of the Evanuris, and perhaps felt he *ought* to throw away what made him similar to them, and that in a sense, towards the end of Tresspasser he was actually being a little bit more honest about himself. His arrogance shone through the entire way and I always felt like someone feeling themselves so superiour, surely they wouldn't dislike looking the part. I always felt like his "posturing is neccesary" could have been just as much the other way. Yes, true, it usually infers being more grandiose than neccesary, but what if it was his posturing "down"; as one of the fleeing, rather than a tactician in his element?

I mean, his vice is pride. So yes, he was quite happy to be left a scholar, quite enjoyed quiet and alone time with spirits and books and artifacts. But at the same time, his prideful nature would have enjoyed, at least to a degree the power and pride his status among the Evanuris afforded him. At Mythal's side, for a time. I doubt he disliked it any more than he disliked his studies, especially with regard to the study of politics and of personal nature's. And it would have been flattering to his ego to be treated as powerful. However ultimately, being inside the corruption he hoped to avert, the High society did not hold full sway over him and he pulled away. At least that's how I see it.

@@maggiekelso997 I would advice, for future discussions to start, rather than end statements with telling that the following is how you see it, as until that line, your entire comment seems, explanatory and quite arrogant. I understand that's not how it's meant, which is why I'm saying this. Also, this comment was made prior to Veilguard, so any information from that would probably be best to tag spoilers, after all, it only came out a few months ago, and not everyone in the fandom has had the chance to play it. Aside from that, yes, certainly, his character is sufficiently nuanced that there is clear signs that he is internally conflicted, as would anyone I assume be, when the comforts that they enjoyed were shown to be gained from something they could not stomach once known. The contrast between knowing one's own power, wanting that power to be lauded and rewarded, and not wanting others to suffer. Wanting comfort, and wanting peace of mind, contrasted with the fact that usually those things are one or the other, adds to the depth of anyone willing to examine their desires and how unachievable they are together.

It's funny how seeing these animatics that people make really pinpoints nuances that I hadn't noticed before, like how Vivienne has a slower pace of speaking than the other two, which she can have because she has such authority. I don't like Vivienne, like, personally, but she's impressive, and I don't dislike her either. Her relationship with the Inquisitor really showcases how professional courtesy can be personal in it's own way.

I was playing this the other day, going around the Hinterlands, picking elfroot, and couldn't help but think of this. Then I fought a bear. Luckily I'm bad at the game so I was playing on casual so the bear wasn't that hard. Now Great Bears? Hell no. I came across one in the Storm Coast and I was OUT OF THERE.

This is why I keep Solas away from those two. Also never travel with two other more mages unless you are a rogue or warrior. I always play rogue, and keep two warriors and one mage in my group, unless I need extra magical attacks, the two mages and one warrior.
