I remember this happening. I used to study in the central library a lot in the late 80s, and he often stood at the top of the main entrance steps, sheltering from the bad weather. The police were asking questions in the lobby of the library after it had happened. They asked if I ever saw him with anyone regularly. He used to talk with a man quite often at the top of the stairs. I described him to the police and gave my address. They called on me a few weeks later asking if I could remember anything else. Sadly, i didn’thave any more information, and of course, it might have had nothing to do with him. I wondered if they ever caught the killer. It was sad because the victim seemed to be a homeless man who was just quietly trying to get through life. He had bushy black hair and a black beard. He was very skinny, and I think he was Asian. The man who used to smoke and chat with him was short, with black greased back hair, and he had a thin black moustache. I used to see him working in a garden up at the Fulwood end of Endcliffe Park. They seemed friendly with each other, though, so I doubt he did it. We need to look after the vulnerable in our society.
